Season's Eve

Image: Eric Heard
This day comes every year. Georgia fans from Macon, Atlanta, Rome, Savannah, and all parts in between make their preparations to drive over the shimmering asphalt of interstates and back roads, traveling on a pilgrimage, going back to a place that holds more than just a football game. It's a place that, this time of year, holds something more precious and rare. It holds hope and opportunity, a clean slate and renewal. This same place holds memories, both glorious and excruciating. Memories of Trippi, Tarkington, Herschel, and Zeier. Memories shared between husband and wife, brother and brother, father and son. A place of calm and refuge, while at the same time a place of crazed frenzy. This place is Sanford Stadium and tomorrow night, it comes alive with 92,000 barking fans who gather to watch a team that has potential to fulfill all of their hopes or dash them until this day returns next year.

I see the game as a battle for offensive tempo. The Pokes want to air it out, breaking downfield fast, taking advantage of Bowman in man-to-man match ups with our young corners. Oklahoma State should want to throw the ball around and it looks like Bryan Evans will have help on Bowman most of the time. Larry Fedora will spread the defense and run a lot of draws and sprint options. Will our defense hold? We're fast enough to shut the outside option game down, but out defensive tackles have to take away the little draw plays with Savage squirting up the middle. The whole key to Georgia's defensive efforts is the defensive line. We need to get controlled pressure on Bobby Reid (containing his lethal feet and forcing throws) and stop inside runs.

Oklahoma State wants a shootout and Georgia shouldn't give them one. The Dawgs need to grind it out on the ground. Control the line of scrimmage and work the clock. I know that our line is young/inexperienced/worrisome. I agree. But so is Okie State's defensive line. There is hope for the running game and it must be effective. I think we'll have mixed results, but will make enough big plays to win. Georgia 34, Oklahoma State 27.
For those of you heading to Athens, one thing to watch for is Oklahoma State's mascot. "Pistol Pete" is a person wearing an awkward plastic amalgam head crafted by duPont and sculpted by Amazon headhunters. He is named after Frank Eaton, a cowboy who learned to shoot things while training to avenge his father's death at the hands of "lawless former Confederates." Look, for the love of God, take that stupid head off. I'm not a fan of human mascots to begin with, but if you are going to have one, either get the whole suit (Col. Reb) or don't give him fake body parts (the Volunteer, Chief Osceola). Tennessee's Johnny Appleseed mascot is goofy, but at least he doesn't wear some giant plastic head that needs a shave. Go get a horse, let Pete ride around on it, and have a shootin' exhibition at the half. Also, people in Texas and, evidently, Oklahoma, have little hand signals for their teams. Okie State's is "guns up" where they point their index fingers up like they are shooting guns in the air. Just try not to cower.

Love Letters to Southern Football

Greatest football moment of my life

"I'm from Ohio, but if I'd known what it was like down south,
I would have crawled down here on my hands and knees."
- Georgia Heisman Winner Frank Sinkwich

The one thing Southern's love almost as much as the South is waxing poetic about the South, and no where is this more true than when we talk about our love of college football. This time of year there are always a few "love letters" to college football written by fans, journalists and columnist. Here we highlight four of the better recent ones:Before you resume tackling your secretary, check out this new 2006 UGA highlight video from UgaMummra. Ready. Set. Tailgate.

SEC East Predictions

I'm a bear. A big scary orange bear

1. Tennessee (6-2/10-3/West Division) - I think Cal will give UT a solid game...unlike last year...but a win? They won't give away enough megaphones to make that happen. I don't think the Vols are that solid, but the schedule works out so nice for them. They avoid Auburn and LSU this year while getting UGA and SC at home. Prediction: Vols win East.

2. Georgia (5-2/9-3) - I said a few days ago that I think 9 wins is par. If we get past these first two games without a loss given the issues at OL, WR, DE and LB, I'll feel a heap different. Prediction: No matter what happens in Weeks 1-7, I think we beat the Gators in Week 8.

3. UF (5-3/9-3) - The schedule is brutal. The defense is gutted, and they're starting a new QB. No, I don't think they repeat. Yes, I do think the pollsters who had them at #3 are high. Prediction: they make it four in a row over the Noles in the Swamp as the young guys come around late in the season.

4. SC (4-4/8-4) - Conference road schedule includes games at Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas and LSU. The Gamecocks could have their best team since the 10-2 season in '84, and they might still only win 8 games. Prediction: Pencil the LSU, Tennessee and Florida games as losses. Gamecocks split UGA and Arkansas.

5. UK (3-5/7-4) - I had this article sort of written yesterday. In it, I had Louisville getting upset by UK in Lexington. Surely, Lville wouldn't be comfortable in their new offense...right? Then they put 73 on Murray State. But I'm sticking to my pre-seeing the score projection.

6. Vandy - Outside shot at a bowl, but that would come at the expense of Ole Miss, UK, and Wake Forest. Prediction: Home for the holidays. As per usual.

Upset Alert:
  • Oklahoma State at Georgia
  • UK vs. Tennessee
  • Florida at South Carolina
  • South Carolina at UNC
  • Vandy vs. Wake
Agree? Disagree?

SEC West Predictions

Flynn vs. the Dawgs in the '05 Title Game (image: Hipple)

1. LSU (12-1/8-1/SECC) - To adapt a line heard elsewhere...the offenses from the first half of tonight's LSU vs. Miss State game looked like two retarded virgins trying to get it on. However, the defense looks exceptional. Prediction: As Flynn and the offense settle in and find their missing chromosome, they'll win enough to become SEC Champs.

2. AU (10-2/6-2) - The revenge factor combined with the fact that I've only see Georgia beat Auburn at home twice since I enrolled in '90 leaves me wary about this late season match-up. Prediction: Of all the things I'm most sure about this season, Florida beating these guys in Gainesville is near the top of the list.

3. ARK (9-3/5-3) - Their road game in Week 2 vs. Bama looms gynormous, but I think they'll take that one. If it were me, I'd leave Casey Dick at home and just play McFadden at QB every down. Prediction: Losses at LSU and at UT + one more.

4. Bama (7-5/4-4) - I think the Tide will start off 2-3 after consecutive losses to Arkansas, Georgia and FSU. However, I could see them building momentum later in the year. The naysayers don't think Saban can rebuild Bama like he did at LSU. To them I ask, do you think Saban is a better coach than Fulmer, Tuberville, Miles and Nutt? At worst, he's a push and in several cases, he's clearly superior. He who has the best coach over the long haul wins. Prediction: Saban will beat UT (home) or Auburn (road) to settle the fans and build towards a bigger '08 and '09 when he wins the West for the first time.

5. Ole Miss - Yaw, yaw, yaw, you suck. A former walk-on at Delta State has won the starting QB job. There's no way to spin that as a good thing. Luckily, MSU is worse. Prediction: Orgeron keeps his job if he can out coach Derek Dooley (La. Tech), Steve Martin (Vandy), Tommy West (Memphis) and Sly Croom. I think he needs to sweep those 4 plus beat his Div I-AA team to keep his job.

6. MSU - I realize that LSU has a dominating defense, but watching the MSU/LSU game left me shaking my head. Croom has a poorly designed offense combined with ill timed plays that were poorly executed by slow kids who don't throw, block or catch well. Otherwise, it's sunshine and roses. Prediction: Croom becomes the first black coach to get fired in the SEC.

Upset Alert:
  • LSU at Bama: Tony Barnhart called this one too.
  • South Florida at Auburn: Luckily for Auburn it isn't a pre-noon Tuberville blow out special.
  • Houston at Alabama: Houston isn't devoid of talent. If Bama were to upset FSU, getting blind sided by Houston is completely within reason.
  • La. Tech at Miss State; De-rek Doo-ley. Clap. Clap. Clap. Clap. Clap.

Gameday Margarita -- A New Sponsor

Gameday Margarita joined us as a sponsor about a week ago. You may have noticed their ad over on the right. The company specializes in frozen beverage machine rental.

If you're looking to kick your tailgate up to a whole new level, serving frozen margaritas is a heckuva way to do it. Especially at an oppressively hot early season game.

They're also a great fit for corporate events, weddings, birthday parties, holiday celebrations, and children's parties (the machine serves more than just margaritas!).

Check them out if you get a chance.

Quick Hitters to Catch Up

A few starting spots look settled, sort of. Brian Mimbs appears to have secured the starting punter job. However, it sounds like Mimbs could be one shank from losing that spot to freshman Drew Butler. It also appears that Kade Weston has reclaimed his starting spot at defensive tackle, but you should expect heavy rotation inside. Lastly, it looks like Brandon Coutu will handle kickoff duties.

Richt Earns a Bigger Halo. The AP reports that after Coach Richt heard about Oklahoma State wide receiver Artrell Woods's potential career-ending off season weight lifting injury he decided to give Woods a gift to lift his spirits. Richt sent Woods a football signed by the entire Georgia team along with some get well wishes.

Isner Hears Some Barks. I know most of you don't care about tennis, but you should watch Georgia alum John Isner at the U.S. Open this week. Isner was our No. 1 player on last year's national champion tennis team. The U.S. Open is his first grand slam tournament and he is making a name for himself, winning two mild upsets in the opening rounds. A UGA flag was spotted in the stands after his opening round victory. Tonight, after Isner won in straight sets, an interviewer asked why everyone was barking at him. John is doing Georgia proud. His reward for winning his first two matches: a match with Roger Federer, the world's best player.

Quick Hitters: Injury and Personnel News

Thoughts and prayers go out to Antavious Coates who tore his ACL yesterday. That is the fourth time he's torn that ligament across his two knees. It's a heart breaker for a kid who was finally making strides on the field. His football playing career is over, but according to David Ching a job as a student-coach may be possible.

In other news, I'll be a day late on the Match-up post regarding our defense vs. their offense. We do have some news on the weather for Saturday and the Indoor Practice Facility discussion.

In personnel news, the indoor practice facility article was written by Quinton McDawg. Quinton has joined Dawgnoxious and myself as a writer for this blog. Quinton is based out of Louisiana and a long time UGA fan so he may be able to shed some light on the SEC West among his other thoughts. Please welcome him aboard. It's a pleasure having him.

Weather for Saturday?

We're still far enough out that the forecasts are changing day by day, but we do have a directional sense of how the weather is trending for the home opener vs. Oklahoma State at 6:45 pm EST.

-- The heat wave looks to break a little. Weather.com's weekend forecast for the 30602 zip code (the official address for Butts-Mehre Hall) shows an afternoon high of 90 degrees with a low of 67. Better still, AccuWeather.com shows a high of 86 and a low of 68.

-- Chance of rain as the day progresses? The Weather.com forecast shows 30% chance of Isolated Thunderstorms in the day and a 60% chance of showers at night. Whereas, the AccuWeather forecast shows "Times of Cloud and Sun" in the day and partly cloudy at night.

What does all that mean? It means that the Georgia Sports Blog now endorses AccuWeather.com's forecasts b/c they told me exactly what I wanted to hear. They're projecting a 15-20 degree drop in temperature from what we've endured through much of August and not a whole lot of rain.

I Can't Stand the Rain

Drawing from georgiadogs.com

Paul has made it clear that the Georgia Sports Blog has good reason to oppose an indoor practice facility for the football team. The issue has come up once again after Mark Richt's mild, frustrated outburst over the rain and lightning that canceled Friday's practice and was followed by an unsolicited apology. This again inspired some Georgia folk to cry out for an indoor practice facility.

Despite this renewed demand, the case against an indoor practice facility remains strong. We still recruit well without one, we still have over $100 million in long term debt for recent facilities improvements, we just built some of the best dorms in the country for our players, and we still compete at a high level nationally. Plus, the team we can't seem to beat, Florida, is the only other team in the conference who also lacks a place to hide from the elements. It doesn't seem to have effected their performance over the past decade or so.

Despite Richt's comments, the athletic department doesn't think an indoor facility is necessary even if we had the money laying around. The Investing in Champions fundraising kick that Damon Evans is currently on doesn't allocate any of its $60 million goal to an indoor facility. Improvements to Sanford Stadium, the Rankin Smith Academic Center, Butts-Mehre upgrades, and the Dan Magill Tennis Center all got a chunk of the new money, but not an indoor practice facility. I bet that Damon at least ran those priorities by Coach Richt, UGA's most important coach, when they set goals for this fundraising campaign. My guess is that Richt saw more pressing needs elsewhere. Plus, we had far more in unallocated revenue in 2005 than the total cost of an indoor practice facility. My point is that if we had a glaring need for an indoor practice facility, we would have one by now. Evidently, Evans and Richt feel that the money is better spent helping other programs and improving other football facilities.

I say relax. It would be nice to have a state of the art practice facility to make sure our players don't miss one rep, but it is far from essential. It will not cost us our coach and it is unlikely to cost us more than a few inconveniences during the season.

No....Thank you South Carolina

South Carolina. Too small to be a state. Too big to be an insane asylum.

Oklahoma State's Defense vs. Our Offense

Ideal Cowboy reaction to our offense

The biggest wild card in the Georgia vs. Oklahoma State game is the new defensive coordinator for Oklahoma State. It's very difficult for a team situated that close to the fertile Texas recruiting soil to have talent as bad as their stats were last year.

The Oklahoma State defense finished 2006 ranked near the bottom of every major defensive statistical category including:
    Rushing Defense -72nd nationally (146.7 yards/game)
    Passing Defense - 84th (217 yards / game)
    Scoring Defense - 82nd (25.62 points/ game)
The defense was apparently very much a risk taking operation because they did finish in the top 12 nationally in sacks and tackles for loss. In other words, if you got past the line of scrimmage, you probably went a long way.

Better tackling, spacing, teaching and scheming could shave all of those numbers down...especially with more experienced players. Luckily for Georgia, the Cowboys lose much of their defensive front four, and they return most of the players who struggled defensively elsewhere.

The entire fate of this game for the Cowboys rests on their new defensive coordinator's ability to take them from wretched defensively to average or better. Their hope is that their offense is so good that an average defense vs. our wildly inexperienced offensive line and traditionally hands of stone WR corp will win it for them.

Georgia has been forced to study tape from Bowling Green, Ohio State and Oklahoma State in order to get ready for what this defense might bring us. Conversely, they have studied 6 years wort of Mark Richt's offense. My hope is that Bobo's play calling and wrinkles combined with Coach Searels different approaching at OL will offset the film room advantage that Ok State has.

Bottom line:
The Cowboys gave up 30+ points to Houston, Alabama, Kansas, and Texas A&M...among others. None of those guys have the offensive talent that Georgia has. However, you can't expect all our guys to improve in their areas of weakness without also assuming the other guy's will make progress to fill some of his shortcomings as well. It's simply a question of how much will they improve vs. how good is our OL in Game 1?

Tomorrow - their offense vs. our defense.

2007 UGA Season: A Journey or a Destination:

Image: Jim Hipple

The 2007 Georgia Bulldog team is awash in talent at virtually every position. The problem is…much of it is extremely young. A team in the Southeastern Conference generally only goes as far as its offensive and defensive lines will carry it.

This year’s Dawgs will start at least two freshmen offensive linemen. If any injuries were to befall Chester Adams (who has struggled with ankle problems for long stretches of his career) or Fernando Velasco, we would start three freshmen along offensive front. That's not a championship recipe.

All told, 12 of the 14 linemen on scholarship have never played a down in Sanford Stadium. Matt Stafford can only make so many plays lying on his back.

Many comparisons have been made to the 2003 Georgia team that started:
    OT – Max Jean-Gilles (So.)
OG – Josh Brock (So.) / Nick Jones (So.)
C – Russ Tanner (RFr.) / Nick Jones (So.)
OG – Bartley Miller (So.) / Fernando Velasco (Fr.)
OT -- Dan Inman (RFr.) / Dennis Roland (RFr.)
That group won the SEC Eastern Division, and it was arguably a few missed field goals from playing for the national title despite 20+ players who started at least one game missing at least one game for injury. This year's OL already has more experience with Adams and Velasco than that '03 group.

However, this year’s team doesn’t have David Pollack, Odell Thurman, Sean Jones or Thomas Davis to offset some of our offensive problems. It also doesn’t get to face a Clausen led Vol team or a Granny Holtz lead Gamecock squad.

Assuming we stay relatively healthy, I think the team should get dramatically better as the season goes along. Said another way, Georgia Tech is in for another beating, and the Cocktail party could be a ton of fun no matter what happens in September.

However, these first two games could be painful to watch. That’s why I say this season is more about the journey to get better than the destination of a title. If we win the East, I wouldn’t be shocked. But I would be pleasantly surprised.

Get past the first two without a blemish, and we brace ourselves for an incredible ride.

My prediction:
9-3 would be par in my mind. Win 10 or more, and the season is a huge success. Win fewer, and it’s a bit of a disappointment.

Agree or disagree?

Oklahoma State Tickets Still Available via Stubhub

If you're looking for tickets to the Georgia vs. Oklahoma State game, there are some really great deals available via our Stubhub.com affiliate. They have what I would call non-premium tickets available for slightly above face value, and they have premium, lower level seats available as well.

They also have tickets available for the UGA vs. South Carolina game and the entire season. As always, the basic concept of Stubhub.com is that folks with extras are selling to fans who need extras. So if you've got a few that you're not going to use for an upcoming home or road game, you could always unload them via Stubhub.

It's not for everyone, but if you believe that there's no such thing as a sellout...it might be for you.

SI.com Profiles the Lead Dawg

Damon Evans

In case you missed it, SI.com columnist Aditi Kinkhabwala wrote a great piece on UGA athletic director Damon Evans last week. She detailed Damon's nine year rise through the ranks at the UGA athletic department from financial analyst to AD.

While Damon inherited one of the best athletic programs in the country from Vince Dooley, he made it better by earning more money, increasing student GPAs through his class attendance policy, and stepping up football scheduling to increase the national profile of UGA athletics. All of this while not only deftly handling the pressure of being young (for an AD) and the SEC's first black AD (a designation Damon seems to appreciate but not dwell on, to his credit).

With all that being said, Damon has yet to make a critical decision that is known to the entire fanbase, like hiring a coach for football or basketball. It's those decisions that make or break an AD. The average Dawg fan doesn't care about profitability or (unfortunately) graduation rates. They want wins. It sounds like Damon appreciates this reality. Given his great start, Bulldog Nation should have a confidence that the athletic department is in good hands.

Hawaii's Bogus Run for the Sugar Bowl?

By now you’ve obviously heard about Hawaii’s pathetic schedule in which their marquee games are...Boise State and Washington (8-26 since '04). The discussion surrounding their schedule has centered around two main points:
1. Is it strong enough for them to make a BCS appearance if they go undefeated?
2. Is it strong enough for Colt Brennan to gain serious Heisman consideration?
Personally, I think the answer to both questions should be “NO!” The Rainbow Warriors are playing 9 or 10 teams that BCS conference members get lambasted for scheduling, and no where is this more absurd than booking a home game with Charleston Southern.
How bad of a program is Charleston Southern?
The Citadel and Furman traditionally schedule
guys like this for homecoming.
CSU has an all-time record in football of 56-116. The program’s only games against Div I-A teams include 6 contests with UAB shortly after the Blazers left Div I-AA and four games with South Florida.

In fairness to Chuck Southern (as Wes Durham called them today), they are coming off their best year in history going 9-2 and finishing in a four way tie for 2nd (and next to last) in the "prestigious" Big South. And by “best year” I mean “only good year.” It’s important to note that they only left the State of South Carolina twice last year. They must have been saving their money for the big trip to Aloha U.

CSU will travel 5,000+ miles for the match-up. Between the jet lag, the talent differential, and June Jones’ penchant for inflating stats and running up the score, the Warriors have a legit shot at breaking 100 points on the Buccaneers.

Wait...there is something more absurd than booking CSU.
Hawaii is also playing Div I-AA Northern Colorado. Last year, Charleston Southern would probably have beaten Northern Colorado (1-10) senseless. This will be “the other” UNC’s first game against a Div I-A team since they played Colorado State in the mid-80s.

If the Rainbows make a BCS game due to formula, pathetic schedule and idiot pollster votes, it will be a travashamockery. (insert pounding on the desk hand gesture)

And why should I/you care?
Well…I’m pretty sure the Sugar Bowl will get the last pick of the BCS at-large teams this year. It belittles the bowl, and the SEC to have to play such someone who did so remarkably little to get there.

Therefore, I say Go Huskies. May they open a chocolate milk jug full of whoop ass all over June Jones’ squad.

"Red Out" for Oklahoma State Game

David Ching and I got the same note from students attempting to organize a "Red Out" for the Oklahoma State game. They're using FaceBook, message boards and other means to remind people to wear red to the game. Here's the note.
Word traveling around the UGA students is a red-out for the opening home game against OSU. Many of us really want this to happen, and for it to work successfully. I am asking you a huge favor, as I know you are well respected among the UGA fanbase. Please PLEASE get the word out about this red-out to as many friends and fans as you possibly can. A red-out against a visiting Big XII program on national television would give the Bulldog squad added publicity and attention, and we as students feel it would energize the team and the crowd to no end. PLEASE do everything you can to support this cause.
Hell...what other color would you wear?
It's not like a Black Out where we're going to try and look like something we're not (ie. Gamecocks). Obviously, I'm in support of the more Red in the stadium the better. Although, it won't make a difference or energize the team; I do think it looks great on TV.

If you would like to join the Facebook group for this it's called "REDout Ok State." If I screwed up the link, don't blame me. I've been on Facebook for like 1 day, and I'm in my 30s so the FaceTubes are new to me. Speaking of which, feel free to add me as a friend. I'm listed as Paul Westerdawg. No snarky photo yet.

And speaking of wearing red, it just so happens that I have red t-shirts, golf shirts and hats in the FanShop store. What a coincidence. lol.

Update -- Groo's reaction was similar as mine. He said, "Asking Georgia fans to come to a game in red is like asking Cure concert-goers to wear black. It’s just going to happen." Amen. But I'm all for the movement. Just as long as they are loud.

More on the Zeier & Howard Combo

Georgiadogs.com's photo from the announcement

Dean Legge offers an editorial regarding Howard's move to the play by play job. I highly recommend reading it. His article starts with Howard and Zeier practicing in Sanford Stadium for the new gig.

Josh Kendall's article talks about how Zeier got the interview. While David Ching offers both an interview with Loran Smith and a full Q&A with Zeier and Howard.

As for me...I have to quote my brother in regards to Georgiadogs.com's photo on their front page (see above). "That photo is so bad. It looks like something that your parents show at a wedding rehearsal dinner...to embarrass you."

Big 12 Preview

Before I get into my thoughts, I want to share some of the "Best of" previews I've seen off the beaten path. To get us started, Barking Carnival is an outrageously funny blog devoted to Texas and the Big 12. Their conference team by team previews are pretty off the wall. Let's start with the program most relevant to Georgia fans.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys preview has a series of quality lines; although none tops this (warning profanity):
Offensive coordinator Larry Fedora knows what he’s doing, moving his family to Stillwater aside. He’s the guy that made Chris Leak a household name. Granted, it was ‘That Leak guy at Florida is a huge p*ssy,’ but at least people were talking. He runs a no huddle spread offense that worked really well last year against teams not named Texas.
He also has completed previews of Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Nebraska and others. I didn't see a Texas preview yet, but I'm sure its coming soon.

Other Big 12 Team Previews:
-- Big 12 South Picks - Sunday Morning Quarterback
-- Big 12 North Picks - Sunday Morning Quarterback
-- Missouri as Big 12 North Favorite - Houston Chronicle
-- The Big XII's bottom feeders - AOL Fanhouse

Westerdawg's Preview:
    Big XII North:
    1. Nebraska - Callahan gets his QB.
    2. Missouri - Who else?
    3. Kansas State - Out of shape QBs don't instill confidence
    4. Colorado - Lost 4 games by a TD or less in '06.
    5. Kansas - Please don't eat me.
    6. Iowa State - Devolving back into the land of Who Cares

    Big 12 South:
    1. Texas - Will Colt's shoulder stay attached?
    2. Oklahoma - I could QB these guys behind that OL
    3. Oklahoma State - Also lost 4 games by a TD or less.
    4. Texas Tech - Won 4 games by a TD or less. Luck runs leaner this year.
    5. Texas A&M - I have a Coach Fran Voodoo Doll. Is that bad?
    6. Baylor - Baptists are better at softball than football.

    (Image: Mark Mangino)

    Bowls:
    Fiesta - Texas
    Orange - Oklahoma
Gator - Nebraska (via Big 12 option instead of Big East)
    Cotton - Oklahoma State
    Holiday - Missouri
    Alamo - Texas Tech
    Insight - Insight.com
    Independence - Texas A&M
Sun - Big East goes here when Big 12 goes Gator
You'll find nothing ground breaking there. Having said that, if you're looking for dark horses to emerge watch opening weekend in the SEC. If either OSU or KSU were to upset UGA or Auburn, the momentum from those wins could propel them forward. Otherwise, I think the league will be pretty predictable at the top and bottom.

As for the middle of the pack? Most of the Big 12 (read: other than NU, OU and UT) suffers from altitude sickness. Anytime they get a little momentum in the polls they self destruct and come crashing back to earth. They are such strangers (or long lost friends in TAMU's and CU's cases) to long term success that they have zero idea how to handle prosperity. In many ways, the middle and bottom end of the conference reminds me of the ACC. You could swap the uniforms of Mizzou, KSU, TTU and TAMU with Clemson, GT, UVA, NCSU and Maryland, and you'd never know the difference.

Am I wildly off base?

Damon Evans throws his old QB a Touchdown Pass

UGA and WSB 750am announced that Scott Howard will be joined in the Radio booth by former Georgia quarterback Eric Zeier for all 2007 road games. Howard has handled color commentary duties for UGA football along side Larry Munson since '93. He will move over to the play by play chair while Zeier takes the color job. Georgiadogs.com has all the details. Per the announcement:
Veteran Georgia radio announcer Scott Howard and former All-America quarterback Eric Zeier will serve as the University of Georgia football radio broadcast team for road games during the 2007 season according to an announcement by UGA Director of Athletics Damon Evans and Bulldog rights holder and flagship station, News/Talk 750 WSB.

The Georgia home games will feature Larry Munson, starting his 42nd season, in the play-by-play role with Howard providing color as he has since 1993. Loran Smith will fill his normal role as Tailgate Show co-host and sideline reporter for all games this season while Neil “Hondo” Williamson will continue to co-host the Tailgate Show as well as fulfill his duties in the booth.
Personally, I think this is an excellent choice. I've heard Zeier on the radio several times, and he provides a high energy, candid take on things. He's more energetic than Buck Belue, and he's not a imbecile loose cannon like Jeff Dantzler.

One of Zeier's wide receivers on the '91 and '92 teams was a young guy named...Damon Evans. Eric might've had the inside track on this one given that his old teammate was running the search. Regardless, good for him.

By the way...I truly am old. My former classmate is the color guy for the football team. Damn. That's a gig for old-timers right?

UGA Practice Notes

Chip Towers has a nice profile piece on Dannell Ellerbe, UGA's middle linebacker. In the article Coach Janeck (line backers) says that Ellerbe's move to MLB from WLB was less about Brandon Miller's performance than what Ellerbe did to take the job. Per the article:
The decision to start Ellerbe at what is essentially the quarterback position on the defense had more to do with what he was doing than what Miller was not. "Brandon did a great job at [middle linebacker]," Jancek said. "It really had more to do with Dannell's comfort level there. He's taken right to it and had a great camp."
That's good news. However, it doesn't make me feel any better about having Miller at SAM linebacker given how few plays he's made there over the past three years. Oh well. Trust the coaches I guess.

'07-'08 Basketball Schedule Announced

The Georgia Bulldogs have released the full basketball schedule for the 2007-2008 season. The non-conference line-up is highlighted by two solid home games (GT and Wake Forest), two solid road games (Gonzaga and Wisconsin), and a trip to Hawaii.

Interestingly, there are only five games against last year's sub-250 RPI teams, and only four of those will count in the rankings. This is an all-time snack cake low for Coach Felton. Still too sugary for my taste, but it's improvement.

The lowlights of the schedule include booking a Div II team (Augusta State), no neutral site game in Gwinnett or Atlanta, and two sub-300 RPI teams in Presbyterian (a new independent) and Jacksonville State. The RPI information based on Ken Pomeroy's stats for last season:

Team'06-'07
RPI
Conf.
Wisconsin (road)
4
Big 10
Georgia Tech (home)
52
ACC
Gonzaga (road/neutral)
60
WCC
Delaware St. (home)
120
MEAC
Wake Forest (home)
122
ACC
ETSU (neutral)
123
ASun
Grambling (home)
287
SWAC
Elon (home)
298
So. Con
Jacksonville St. (home)
315
OVC
Presbyterian (home)
N/A
Independent
Augusta State (home)
N/A
Div II

Other likely teams in Hawaii

Rd 2: Tulane or St. Mary's (Ca)
143 or 154

Rd 3: Hawaii or Ohio or St. John's
98 or 105 or 133

Look for Delaware State and GT to slide significantly in the ratings while Wake and Gonzaga make a move up. Also, Presbyterian isn't as bad as it looks. Yes, they will stink, but statistically some of that will be softened by them playing the toughest schedule. They'll still stink badly though. Savannah State bad.

The Hawaii trip is especially well scheduled. The RPI system gives you .6 strength of schedule points for a home win, 1.0 for a neutral win, and 1.4 points for a road win. Losses are counted in opposite fashion such that a home loss counts as 1.4 points. (this is an over simplification, but you get the idea).

In other words, scheduling teams like Hawaii, St. John's, Tulane and ETSU is the RPI equivalent of scheduling teams like Iowa, Missouri, NC State, Nebraska and Oklahoma (based on last year's RPI). Even though it's not nearly as entertaining as actually...you know...playing those teams...you know...at home.

My overall feeling on the schedule:
I would've liked to have gotten a decent RPI top 150 game in Gwinnett Arena instead of the pointless Augusta State scrimmage match-up. But overall, it's a continued incremental improvement on the scheduling front from Felton. He and Coach Hermann aren't just scheduling a little tougher every year. They're scheduling a little smarter, and that's more important than scheduling hard.

Is it an overly watchable home non-conference schedule? Definitely not.
Will the early home slate sell non-conference tickets? No.
Will it help us make the tourney. Hopefully.

We should go 10-3 at worst vs. the non-conference schedule. If we can do that and add a 9-7 SEC record, we make the SEC tourney very interesting for a change. It would come right down to the wire...and 11 non-conference wins is very doable.

Other schedule tidbits:
-- UGA plays three of its first five SEC games on the road.
-- The middle of the schedule reveals 4 of 5 SEC home games in a row.
-- The schedule closes in brutal fashion with 4 of 6 SEC road games.
-- We play GT in Athens four days after playing Gonzaga in Spokane. Here's hoping we booked a heckuva well timed flight back home!

What's your reaction?

Best Football Day of the Year: Nov. 10th

Image: DawgPost.com

If you're a college football fan, check your Lay-Z-Boy's pull lever for proper WD-40 lubrication, focus on your TIVO/DVR decisions and chill the beer a little colder on November 10th because you have tough decisions to make.

That weekend will present you with the best college football watching day of the year. Check out this slate of games:
    SEC
  • Auburn at Georgia - the Deep South's oldest rivalry. The home team is 5-11-1 since '90 in this series. A trend we're hoping to buck this year.

  • Arkansas at Tennessee - McFadden & Co. meet up with a Vol squad looking for revenge. The Vols will have a shot to cinch the East and McFadden could be stalking the Heisman in this one a best. At worst, both teams should still be in contention for New Years Day Bowls.

  • Florida at South Carolina - Meyer is 1 play away from starting his career 0-2 vs. Spurrier, and he's facing arguably South Carolina's most talented squad since 1984. The last two games were incredibly entertaining. Expect more of the same.

    ACC
  • Florida State at Virginia Tech - If FSU's new coaches do their job, this could be a preview of the ACC title game. Both teams could have BCS At-Large or better dreams. VT is exceptional at home, but Beamer is 0-7 vs. Bowden.

  • Boston College at Maryland - If BC wants to win the Atlantic division, they'll most likely have to win this game.

  • Virginia at Miami - This shouldn't be a big game, but with Patrick Nix calling the plays in Coral Gables, this could be a great upset type affair.

    Others
  • Michigan at Wisconsin - The Wolverines play OSU, ND, Penn State and Oregon at home this year. This is their only tough road game. This will decide UW's chances at a BCS at-large at a minimum.

  • USC at Cal - I believe this is the defacto Pac-10 Title Game. Obviously, UCLA fans would disagree.

  • Texas Tech at Texas - The Red Raiders will need a win here to have a shot at the Cotton, Holiday or Gator Bowls. A loss and it's hard to imagine they end up anywhere interesting. The Horns should be narrowing in on the Big 12 South title or a BCS At-Large birth with this game.

  • Fresno State at Hawaii - One of only three legit chances for the Warriors to take a loss.
And just to get you primed for the weekend, West Virgina hosts Louisville on Thursday Night. Weekends like this are why you need TV and Satellite reception at your tailgate. UGA vs. Auburn will either be a 3:30 pm (my assumption) or an evening ESPN/ESPN2 pm kickoff. Either way, the remote control will be burning up as we bounce from quality game to quality game.

Saban stares into the face of Karma

There is nothing to see here. Please move along.

Remember a couple of months ago when Nick Saban took a shot at Mark Richt regarding player discipline? It looks like Richt is the one who should be chiding Saban now. Alabama star defensive back Simeon Castille was arrested Sunday morning for disorderly conduct outside a Tuscaloosa nightclub. This is just the most recent arrest for the Tide who also had three players involved in a street brawl on July 14.

It looks like even Saban can lose control of a couple of players who not only want to get drunk, but fightin' drunk. Remember that, Nick, next time you want to rib someone about players in a bar. In any case, I doubt Castille will miss significant playing time and I'd bet he's playing September 22nd.

(Story Update: He was arrested, and "there's nothing to see here.")

Rennie Curran: Inspirational Story

Rennie Curran (Image: Dean Legge. DawgPost.com)

Josh Kendall interviewed Rennie Curran, freshman linebacker for Georgia, about his native home land of Liberia, his upbringing and the opportunity and responsibility of being a Georgia Bulldog.

From the article:
Rennie Curran Sr. and Josie Curran moved to Atlanta from war torn Liberia before their only son was born, but that didn't stop the bloodshed from two separate civil wars that lasted a total of 11 years from reaching their suburban home.

When Rennie Curran Jr., now a true freshman linebacker at Georgia, was growing up, the Curran home was a safe house for friends and family seeking refuge from the strife. At one point, more than 12 people lived in the home, Josie Curran said.

"I had to give up my bed some nights, so it was just a real humbling experience," Rennie Curran said. That experience has never left Curran, nor has the lesson his parents have drilled into him again and again.
Mohamed Massaquoi is also from Liberia. Both of these guys have faced some unusually tough situations on their path to Athens. During Curran's recruitment, I wrote the following on this site.
I read in an interview somewhere that Massaquoi never talks about his Liberian heritage or his family's time there with the media. I don't blame him. After reading the CIA link above and glancing at the Wikipedia entry on Liberia, I wouldn't want to talk about it either.
Back to Rennie...Curran is a power packed, generously listed 5'11" 210 pounds of tackling whoop ass. Although a different continent entirely, his background and stature remind me of Dat Nguyen, the Texas A&M linebacker, who rewrote all the TAMU tackling records.

Nguyen's family immigrated from South Vietnam and he came up pretty hard. Nguyen was also a very undersized linebacker who consistently made play after play after play after play.

(Image: Nguyen. Dallas Morning News)

I can't wait to see how Curran develops.

Offensive and Defensive Headlines

Image: Dawgpost.com

There are a couple of articles today about the wide receivers. Josh Kendall starts things off with talk of the wide receiver ready to prove the critics wrong. He also mentions that Michael Moore (no the skinny one) is making a big push for playing time at WR. And he lets us know the progress of Aron White at TE/WR. (not sure how many of those articles are for subscribers).

As for the offensive side of the ball, Kiante Tripp had some entertaining quotes that David Ching has transcribed regarding his move to offensive tackle.

On the defensive side, the AJC has a large profile on Reshad Jones and his push for playing time at safety. David Ching has an interview with Jarius Wynn. If Kiante Tripp is on one end of the media savvy super quote machine spectrum, then Wynn is on the other.

Lastly, the AJC has an article up profiling the cross training activities on both sides of the ball.

Why the New Kickoff Rule Shouldn’t Hurt the Dawgs Too Bad

Image Thomas Brown vs. UT (DawgPost.com)

By: Quinton McDawg

If you haven't heard by now, one of the noteworthy rule changes for the 2007 season is a new edict on kickoff ball placement. Instead of the familiar 35 yard line mark for kickoffs, the NCAA has moved the ball back to the 30 yard line, inspiring fear and altering strategies. An extra five yards of field position can be critical, especially at the end of a tight game. While I do not want to minimize the rule change in any way, I don’t think it will affect Georgia as much as other teams.

First, since Richt took over, Georgia has never kicked a lot of balls out of the end zone. In 2002 and 2003, we had no touchbacks. Zero. In 2004, Brandon Coutu, one of the best legs Georgia’s ever had, took over most of the kickoff duties and our touchbacks increased, but not drastically. In the past three seasons, 27% of our kickoffs have resulted in touchbacks.

The Dawgs seem to prefer a high, fluttering kick to the corner of the field and let coverage race down and tackle. So, Georgia is already familiar with the type of strategy most coaches are likely to employ because that is exactly the strategy we've been using for the past several years. Kick it high and stay in your coverage lane. It’s a strategy that has worked for UGA. Georgia hasn’t given up a kickoff return for a TD since Richt took over. Five more yards will undoubtedly help opponent’s field position, but shouldn’t result in a bunch of returns for TDs.

Second, the kickoff coverage for the Dawgs will be better. Richt has noted that the stockpile of redshirt freshmen are good looking athletes with size and speed. Reshad Jones, Darryl Gamble, Akeem Dent and Quintin Banks are often noted by Richt when kickoff coverage comes up. This year, Georgia has more of what Richt likes on special teams: big bodies that can run downfield and make a sure tackle. We’ve lacked an abundant supply of that body type in recent years, but not this season.

For the same reasons, Georgia's return game should be better both because of the rule and because of personnel. The same types of bodies that are good for kick coverage are also good for blocking on kick returns. Also, Georgia hasn't returned a lot of kicks in recent years, about 25%. Our opponents have been much better at getting us to take a knee than the other way around. That means we should get more returns. We should also have able returners with Brown, Moreno, and Henderson which should increase the potency of those returns.

So, while we may see less of this:

We should see more of this:

Day 11 Headlines

Headlines:Quick editorial (update): I have no problem with giving Joe Cox some snaps. The offensive line from what I'm hearing is stone cold awful right now. They are inexperienced, and our starting QB is likely going to be the crap beat out of him for long stretches this year.

We need the backup QB to have some seasoning because he's more than likely going to come off the bench at some point. Particularly this year. UGA has needed its backup QB in:
2006 - various times re: injuries and performance
2005 - ARK and UF re: injuries
    2004 - GT re: injury
2003 - LSU re: injury (but DG sucked it up and came back)
    2002 - Clemson re: performance
    2001 - no real issues
2000 - second half of season re: injuries
Richt didn't say he's going to a 2 QB system. There's no sense in over reacting here.
