Basketball Schedule: UGA to play UAB

The Georgia men's basketball schedule continues to evolve as the Birmingham News reports that UAB is set to begin a home and home with Georgia starting in the upcoming 2009-2010 season. The first game will be played at Bartow Arena, and the second game will be played in 2010-2011 at Stegeman Coliseum.

The Blazers will play Georgia, Virginia, Cincy and Butler in 2009 along with their regular CUSA slate. They are consistently in the RPI 50-100 range so this is a quality mid-major game without being a Ben Hur game.

The existing 2009-2010 Georgia Basketball schedule so far:

Home:
Georgia Tech
New Orleans (Billy Humphrey's return)
UNC-Asheville

Away:
St. John's (Big East Challenge in Madison Square Garden)
Missouri
Virginia Tech
UAB

Neutral:
Illinois

Oh, I see what you're doing Damon Evans. Basketball team goes on a one-in-a-million SEC tournament run, plays in Washington, D.C. the March after I move from there to Birmingham.

Then, schedule a game against UAB, in Birmingham, after I MOVE TO TEXAS!!!! FSDALKJFWLKJFWEALiuFEWA

Not bitter.

A home and home with UAB? Really? I really like Coach Fox and think he will do a great job, but it's sad that we've been reduced to this.

Ironically, the basketball donation fund letter came in the mail today. Guess I better build up those points so that I'll be sure to get good seats for UAB in 2010 ... /snark

Ubiquitous-
nothing wrong with doing home and homes with smaller programs when it comes to basketball. Just look at Mercer, in the last 2 seasons they have hosted both Alabama and GT. Can't go into basketball scheduling with the same outlook as for football. Apples and oranges.

Ubiquitous, you clearly know very little about college basketball if you we've been "reduced" to a home and home with UAB.

You do know that UAB has gone to the tournament 3 times in the last 5 years, going to the round of 16 in 04, right?

This is a great mid RPI series.

myfier ... If UAB is such a big time RPI booster, why will this be the fist time they've hosted a SEC team since 2003?

I'd rather play a team like this team home and home than filling our early season schedule with South Carolina Upstairs and TAMU-Corpus Crispy.

And to answer your question, no power conference teams want to go on the road against teams like this. What's the benefit? Win or lose, naive people like you say "who cares, its just UAB" or "holy crap, we just lost to U-A-freaking-B?"

Does anyone know the date that we will be playing Mizzou in Columbia? I live in KC and would love to take my son to see the Dawgs play.

Most SEC schools aren't willing to play a better team in a lesser conference on the road. That's why UAB doesn't host SEC teams often. Ask Kentucky, Alabama, And Auburn about getting beat at home by UAB.
