Dooley sets the record straight with Finebaum. He didn't take the Auburn job in '80

Apparently Dooley read Finebaum's article a few weeks back on Dooley taking the Auburn job in '80 only to turn it down and return to UGA. Dooley called Finebaum on the story, and he cleared the air (Mobile Register).

Dooley talks about exactly how close the deal really got to going down, but he points out that he never accepted the gig. However, he was considering it strongly enough to call Erk and tell him that Erk would have to coach the national title game vs. ND.

Most interesting about the article...Dooley recommended Dye for the job in Auburn after he walked away from the opportunity. Article also has a funny line about Herschel and Bo.

I like Dooley but I have wondered for 26 years what would have happened if Dooley had left. The thing about Erk having to coach the NC game was true but Dooley needed to tell the Rest of The Story. When the team found out Dooley was considering the AU job they voted and told the administration they did not want Dooley to coach them if he accepted AU. Faced with not being able to realize every coaches dream he turned down the job. Erk having thought he was finally going to get a HC job had had enough and jumped to Div I-AA with no team. Just wish Erk had got it. We would have been running the option until the end of time. All these Dawgs that hate the passing game would have been happy.
