The Hockey Equivalent to GT vs. Cumberland

Kazakhstan beat Thailand 52-1 in the Asian Games Hockey Tournament. DeadSpin assumes they must've been coached by Steve Spurrier. Touche.

I prefer to compare the debacle to the Georgia Tech vs. Cumberland football game in 1916. Tech won that game by a score of 222-0. Of course, Cumberland's team was mostly frat brothers who had never played together, and they were only wearing Cumberland's "jerseys" for the game because the school had already canceled its football program. But that's neither here nor there.

Either way....52-1 in hockey is beyond imagination.

The Cumberland game is one thing about which we'll never mind a shot taken at us; we take a lot of pride in having run the biggest blowout in CFB history. Especially since the game was for vengeance (regarding the 22-0 baseball game the previous year in which Cumberland used several professional ringers dressed out as their baseball team).

Jeff,

Not picking a fight here, but that explanation has always rung a little hollow with me given that every decent college baseball player of that pre-NCAA period also played semi-pro when they could for extra money. Isn't that really just saying "Their ringers were way better than our ringers?"

Yeah, that's a good point, MaconDawg. But even without any justification, it's fun having a record like that, even if it means we're jerks. "My team won the biggest blowout ever." "Yeah, but you're a dick!" "True... My team won the biggest blowout ever!"

Like most GT "great achievements" it's grossly overblown. Hey, we scored 222 points!

Although, we did it against frat brothers that had never practiced together and weren't really a team.

But "hey, we scored 222 points."

Since the game happened in 1916, I can only assume that Cumberland's regular team was off fighting the Germans.

yeah kinda like uga fans going crazy of our 6 losses in a row to ya'll although gt owns the two longest streaks of 7 and 8...yeah that's right check it!

Anon - Dear Dumbass,

GT does own the longest streak at 8. Although back then neither team played with black players or face masks. So congrats on that huge accomplishment that happened before you or likely your parents were born. (1949-1956)

UGA has a seven game winning streak since then and two six game streaks. And we're about to get another 7 game streak.

1991-1997 - UGA wins 7 in a row
1978-1983 - UGA wins 6 in a row
2001-2006 - UGA wins 6 in a row and counting

GT has never had the 7 game streak that you are referring to. Only the one 8 game streak.

For proof see the College Football Warehouse's link.

Also, in semi-response to "Cumberland's regular team was off fighting the Germans", just thought I'd throw this out there since GT always gets flack for football performance during the WW's.

After the 1917 MNC season, Tech turned down a Rose Bowl bid so that players could enlist. Not a well-known fact.
