Thanks Skip

I looked around yesterday, and I couldn't find the video. What an awesome, awesome moment. When I think back to the most amazing sports watching vibes/moments of my life, a few really stick out. The '96 Auburn 4 overtime thriller, the '97 Cocktail Party and Michael Johnson's catch on 4th and 15 were all amazing.

But that slide by Bream was as ridiculously euphoric as anything I've ever seen football or otherwise. And Skip Carey nailed the hell out of that call.

My only regret involving Skip was not making it onto his pre-game call-in show to ask him about the In Field Fly Rule. Nothing set him off like a stupid question about that singular topic. Total comedy.

That play prompted one of the craziest nights in Athens ever. Anyone else remember how they had to close the streets down for the spontaneous parades of people who flocked downtown? Good memories. Thanks indeed, Skip.

Best Game I have ever been to of any kind. We were all dog-piling on top of each other in the stands. Broke a few of the seats. Walking out of the stadium, the cops were ever urging us to riot in the streets (weird I thought).

When my son was born, I had the muralist paint the stands and scoreboard from this game on his wall. My wife swears to this day that I am a maniac, but some things you just want to remember forever.

I definitely remember the spontaneous celebration in the streets downtown.

Folks climbing on the anchor, Georgia Theater was packed, oh yes I remember it.

The Chapel Bell rang all night.

People climbing on the traffic lights, the obelisk and everywhere else. College Ave & Broad St were impassable.

I thought I was the only one who noticed that.

Skip sounded so bored when he did that call-in show...and for good reason. Sometimes it seemed as though only morons were given the call-in number.

But, that's what happens when you open a phone line to the public and a good portion of your listeners are rednecks who just want to hear themselves on the radio. They automatically ask about the in-field-fly rule or how E.R.A is computed or what constitutes a save situation because that's all they can think of.

One of my favorite Skip Caray lines came from watching the Braves in the 80's. After many of the Braves losses (and there were many back then), Skip would often say, "Well, you can't win 'em all, it would get boring." That may not seem funny in written form, but Skip delivered it perfectly in his deadpan form.

He will be missed.

I was there. It ranks in the top three sporting events I have ever attended. Auburn Blackout and Auburn 2002 are the other two. After the game, we didn't know what to do or where to go. We just damn sure knew we weren't going home!

Somewhere I still have a tee shirt with the image from the AJC of Sid at the plate and Gant diving onto him.

Ernie and then Skip - the voices of summer from my youth back when the Braves were on TBS every night. I miss those days. Thanks Skip... you will never be forgotten.

Alright, 'fess up. Which one of you was the guy in the pink shirt? And which one was the guy in the pink Zubaz hat?

I was there too. I remember the Pirates wives about 20 rows behind home plate mock tomahawk chanting in the 7th and 8th inning since we were losing all game long. I jumped so high when Bream slid in, I fell into the row of seats below me. When I got up, I looked around and the wives were nowhere to be found...go figure.
We all stayed at least 20 minutes after the game was over still cheering, it was the craziest scene ever, no one wanted it to end!
