Miami DC departs for Oklahoma State

According to the Miami Herald, Defensive coordinator Bill Young has left the University of Miami to join his alma mater, Oklahoma State. Miami head coach Randy Shannon did not tip his hand regarding potential replacements. The Herald quotes him as saying: "I will be looking for the best possible defensive coordinator to replace him. If that candidate is not out there, those responsibilities will fall to me."

Randy had better get a move on if he doesn't want to double up as his own defensive coordinator, because he still has not replaced offensive coordinator Patrick Nix.

According to the AJC, Mark Richt's spokesman said Miami had not requested permission to speak with Willie Martinez.

Who has two thumbs and no comment?

This is good news. Despite a rough season, things would be worse if we had to scramble for a DC right now.

So for all the "Fire Willie" stuff, it looks like the choice these people have now is Martinez or Rodney Garner.

The grass is always greener... until reality shows up. Ask Auburn.

I know many, many, very many of you will be happy about Willie leaving, but I ask you all this simple question, "Who will replace him?"

KIRBY SMART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the ultimate overachiever

Despite the general consensus regarding the effectiveness of the defense this season, we could end up downgrading if CWM leaves. It does not appear that Richt runs a meritocracy--often valuing loyalty over results--so the "best man for the job" may not end up with the job.

players play...coaches coach...oh how expectations rule...we finish #2 last yr...pre season #1...we win 10 gms in the middle of running a MASH unit and you look to place blame on CWM....Searles stayed Garner stayed...we have great coaching stop hating...ball control vs quick strike...we were a -4 in to on our 3 losses..just deal with it,you turn it over you lose...

Shannon should hire Patrick Nix for DC, he is great at stalling and confounding offenses.

@JasonC Nix... that's a good one!

This Miami situation has no upside for Georgia.

We end up overpaying an average DC to keep him around, or we get saddled with a gigantic risk (Garner) at the position.

Sounds like they're coming after him so I doubt we get out of this unscathed.

It would of been nice about a month ago if Miami did this. I guess Garner will be our DC if Willie leaves. I will take anything over willie at this point though.

Guys, chill out w/ the "who would we get" sky-is-falling stuff. When Calloway left, Richt said he thought about who was the best coached OL we had played. In his opinion, it was LSU, so he offered the job to Searels and the rest is history.

CMR won't "just try to fill" the position. Kirby Smart will on the top of the list. Travis Jones might even be a name, though he doesn't have DC experience. Tubs ain't a joke. He and CMR are good friends and he'd love to stick it to Auburn in mid-November for a couple of years. There are tons...tons of guys out there that are waiting to send their application in for this job. It's not August, for goodness sakes, it's January.

I'll just go ahead and throw Charlie Strong's name out there as a pipe dream.

If we hire someone else, Garner is gone. There's no way he stays if come after again and Richt passes him over for the DC job.

In no particular order:

Bruce Fowler -Vandy
Jeff Casteel -West Virginia
Tyrone Nix -Ole Miss
Dick Bumpas -TCU
Kirby Smart -Alabama

Suck on that you Wet Willie homers!

I just hope Damon Evans mans up with some serious cash after comparing our program to Florida! I think most everyone will agree that defenses win championships. The reason we contended year in and year out during the David Pollack/Thomas Davis/Greg Blue era was because we had smart offensive play with stellar defenses. While these players were outstanding at their positions, they were backed up by hard hitting WELL COACHED team players (ex.Jonathan Sullivan, Sean Jones, Boss Bailey, Odell Thurman etc.)

Maybe Garner deserves a shot but he is a member of this defensive coaching staff which has had these troubling melt downs over the last few years. How does he not somehow share some responsibility?

I can't believe all of these people now defending Willie Martinez. I like the guy but i hope he leaves. Our D has gotten worse each year he's been DC.

And you can't blame everything on injuries. Our offensive line had plenty of injuries last year and Searles had a bunch of freshman playing well.

2005-2007*
These must be the "lost years" we are trying to forget about.

1 SEC Championship
2-1 Bowl Record
1 #2 finish

*did all this without the extreme tallent of Odell, Pollack and Davis. Did it with guys like Kelin Johnson and Tra Battle.

I am not sure Garner will leave if he is passed over, especially if it is a big time hire...but lets not get ahead of ourselves Willie is not gone yet, and I am sure Mark Richt is going to do everything he can to keep Willie and UGA. Richt is big on staff continuity

I see a lot of people on here and other sites mentioning how great Charlie Strong is. Did we all forget the great UF defense of 2007? CWM may not have had his best year as a coordinator this year but it wasn't as bad as Strong's D the year before. Our problem was injuries, lack of a rush, and penalties at inopportune times. Some blame falls on the coaches but some has to be placed on the players too. Some it was just bad luck/bad calls. We need to keep Willie, get healthy, and play with some passion and everything will fall into place.

If Garner leaves b/c we didnt promote him, so be it!

Good riddance Willie!

:prays to god that Miami hires him:

m dawg: Way to ignore 2008.

Sorry, 2006 and 2008 were absolute crap.

2005 and 2007 had unacceptable, disastrous meltdowns.

We don't need to rehash this.

As someone else said, its January folks. There is plenty of time to find a top notch DC. Tons of people would love to have this job.

And if Rodney wants to cry and quit because he doesn't get the job, well then he leaves. Honestly, it is one thing to respect and appreciate the coaches we have (which I do), but coddling them is asinine. They will leave in a heartbeat if it suits their interests (as they should), but on the flip side UGA has to try and get the best coaches possible.

Ahhh, the resiliency of internet message board talking points.

2007's defense had 9 new starters and was arguably better than 2006's defense.

NOTE: I don't think Rodney would cry and quit. I think people are grossly underestimating his maturity and his understanding of how things work in the business of Div I college football.

2005 and 2007 had unacceptable, disastrous meltdowns.

...for pretty much every single team in CFB.

Do you know how many non-UGA SEC teams this decade went a whole season without a 30+ game?

Three. '03/'07 LSU and '06 UF.

'05-'08 Georgia has not had a combination of talent/experience even close to what those MNC defenses had.

I don't think he would cry and quit either. I think he'd leave during next year's coaching change season... if he wasn't promoted to DC, which is what would probably happen at this point, understandably so.

Muckabeast- "Sorry, 2006 and 2008 were absolute crap. 2005 and 2007 had unacceptable, disastrous meltdowns." Are you talking about the UGA defense in your second life game or the actual, reality based D's of those years? (BTW-I'm not sure why CWM doesn't get any credit for being on the defensive staff with CBVG...I guess he was able to hide his terrible-ness so well that his secondary units always seemed well coached (K. Curry, T. Davis, Blue, Minter, Jennings, Thornton, etc. etc.) and he was promoted when CBVG left...hmmm...)

The 2005 team won the SEC championship and the 2007 team finished the season #2 in the AP poll. I think you are probably nit picking just a bit. It takes quite a talented team and staff to get you in the position to be a play or two away from a national championship....

2006 was absolute crap by what measure? They gave up 51 against Tennessee...but the other three losses included 24 against Vandy(24-22), 21 against the MNC Florida Gators(21-14), and 24 against Kentucky(24-22). Not to mention that UGA was 4-0 in 2006 in games where the offense put up less than 20 points.

Your opinions don't seem to have any sort of rational basis.

As far as the meltdowns, I admit that I often get flustered at blitzing the safety on 3rd and long and even 4th and long...i just don't get that. But games like Florida in 2006, W Va. in 2005, GT/Uf/Alabama this year are examples on how TOTAL failure can snowball. You don't give up 24 points in a row, 21 points in a row, etc. etc. b/c your defense can't stop anyone...your offense has to be crapping out at the same time. That is UGA's problem. Since the W Va game, we haven't been able to have either side of the ball step up to stop the snowball.

Hey BCS-SUCKS, LOOK AT THE NUMBERS YOU MORON. OUR DEFENSE HAS GOTTEN WORSE EVERY YEAR HE HAS BEEN THE DC.

"not having to actually be the one to fire a long-time, very loyal employee and top recruiter at the height of recruiting season"

I never said anything about firing Garner. I simply said that if he leaves, so be it. I would never want to fire coach garner. I'm not an idiot, like you.

Hey BCS-SUCKS, LOOK AT THE NUMBERS YOU MORON. OUR DEFENSE HAS GOTTEN WORSE EVERY YEAR HE HAS BEEN THE DC.

What "numbers" do you want me to look at? Do you want me to look at the 2007 points allowed number, which, adjusted for the clock changes and move to 30 yard line kickoffs drove scoring much higher across CFB, is no substantially different than 2006, despite 9 new starters by the end of the year?

You've got yourself a really bad and pretty dishonest talking point there, dude. Might want to lose that one.

Anonymous said...

Ok BCS-Sucks, here we go...you f'in MORON.

1st of all the clock changes DECREASED the number of plays per team.

2nd of all, there are a number of variables to consider, TO ratio, etc.

But in the end, NUMBERS DONT LIE:

2005 - 16.4 ppg
2006 - 17.6 ppg
2007 - 20.2 ppg
2008 - 24.5 ppg (2nd most ever)

And this is college football, there are new starters every year.
