Based on the UGA press release and the AJC article this means just about nothing. It sounds like a job title change to warrant an off cycle compensation adjustment.
If you're worried about Rodney Garner being pissed....until yesterday he made about twice what Jancek made...as the lowest paid member of the coaching staff over the age of 28. And if Jancek is such an invaluable member of the brain trust, why was he the lowest paid member of the staff until McClendon came on board?
I don't get it. But I seriously doubt it matters regarding the '09 season.

While I doubt it was CMR's intention, what this does is create a convenient buffer for Martinez should the '09 defense under-perform.
Lovely, and I share the concern about Rodney being pissed. I think LBs have been the weakest performing area of the defense since Jancek came on board, and I was rather hoping he would be on his way to greener pastures after this last season. That we're not only keeping him, but promoting him, makes no sense whatsoever.

I share no concern about Rodney being pissed, but god are people ever going to take that meme and run with it.
A certain UGA sports staffer said something interesting recently to the effect of "if Rodney leaves, it'll be for a head coaching job period". I never saw any elaboration on the topic, so it may have just been hunch. But they are closer to the program than I am. And anyway I'm just not that worried about it. I love having Garner, but he's already become more myth than man in the eyes of many UGA fans. He's not, with all due respect to him, irreplaceable.

This is nothing more than CMR rewarding loyalty and keeping staff morale high. Garner doesn't care about titles, so I don't share your concern regarding CRG.
I was dismissive of Searals being named running game coordinator and now co-defensive coordinator for Jancek.
These titles are a joke; it is getting be like banks where everyone is a vice president or the FBI where every agent is "special".
