Could Adams pull a Dick Cheney?

Our high regard for Michael Adams is well known. Today it was announced that Mike Adams is going to chair the search committee to replace Myles Brand as NCAA President. It is difficult to know what impact chairing the search committee might have on his rumored candidacy for the job. He appears to be downplaying any interest in the position.

"I am not a crook." Deloitte & Touche still disagree.

It's not as outlandish as it might seem. The average tenure for a college president is 8.5 years. Il Duce is getting long in the tooth, as college presidents go. The NCAA job is high enough profile to be appealing. Might Adams follow in the footsteps of a previous search committee chair who found none as qualified as he? Do we want him to?

While "Adams Steps Down" has the mellifluous sound of a choir of angels, might he do college football more harm than good as NCAA President? Adams is a well known, if poorly received, advocate of a playoff system. Current contractual arrangements notwithstanding, he would certainly be in a position to impose a playoff system as NCAA President. BCS fans, take heart because he is also a well known hypocrite and sellout. This story is going to be interesting to follow.

UPDATE: AJC reports Adams is on the shortlist to replace Brand. His statement "I'd never talk publicly about two things, jobs or money. I love the University of Georgia. My plan is to be here until retirement," is positively Saban-esque.

This isn't exactly on point, but I hate that man with the fire of 1000 suns.

It's still too soon to be jockeying for position here and our thoughts and prayers should still be with Mr. Brand's family.

But with the inevitable of sports today and the WWL means that everything must be decided now. With that, I will lead the campaign for the honorable Dr. Adams to move his residence from 30609. All donations can be sent to ThisHasn'tComeSoonEnough@uga.edu I wish the best of luck to Dr. Adams's future endeavors.

Anon @ 9:09, you are squarely on point.

And to be clear, we mean no disrespect to Myles Brand. His family deserves our thoughts and prayers.

I'm afraid his ham handed handling of his advocacy for a playoff dooms his efforts (and make no mistake, I'm sure there is a an effort being made by him) to become the next NCAA pres.

Hating Mike Adams makes no sense.

Did you enjoy UGA being a middle tier football program? That's what you had before Adams.

Adams has also more than doubled the endowment of the school since he came to UGA.

Yeah, the cocktail party thing was lame, but you're never going to agree with someone 100%.

The fact that he was able to give Dooley the punt was a god send as well. Dooley wore out his welcome right about the time he stuck us with Ray Goff.

And Adams had everything to do with raising the academic standards of the University and nothing to do with the HOPE scholarship.

In other news, the world is flat.

Ah, the finger quotes. Lookin' nice, Mike.

Wait a minute. If Adams were to head up the NCAA, his office would be about half a mile down the street from mine. Crap! He should just retire.

And as an academic president, he's been nothing but horrible. In the end, that's what a president should be judged upon, not fundraising or football wins.

Dick Cheney chaired a search committee once....
You might get your wish, Paul.

Who would be on the short list to replace Adams? What would they do better than Adams moving forward?

the only way I would be against Czar Mike leaving UGA for the NCAA (why shouldn't the entire collegiate sports world share the misery with us?) would be if Darth Leebern decided to make Suzanne Yoculan the next UGA President.

Muckbeast: All similarly situated endowments have grown over past 10 yrs with the booming economy. Georgia, however, has not kept pace w/ peer institutions. Further, many give regardless of Adams just as many tithe even if they think the current preacher stinks. Adams took the very top donors from the respective schools when he came in for his sole cultivation with middling success. Some like him. Some can't stand him and have stayed away.

It'd be nice if we had a president interested in attracting hot shot researchers. This was Knapp's MO. Knapp had his flaws, but that's what his goal was and he was successful. Adams' goal was to become Governor or Senator. His personality ruined those chances so now he just needs something that feels *prestigous*. This is picture perfect. Pull a Dick Chaney? You mean shoot his friend in the face? Only every day and twice on Sunday.

In a process that resembled a Cuban election, Adams just named Jere Morehead Provost.

Adams also stuck us with his good buddy, Jim Harrick, against Dooley's better judgment.

Yes, we traded in Donnan for Richt, but that's blind-squirrel/acorn stuff as far as Adams is concerned. The NCAA presidency is the kind of position designed to be filled by a major buzzkill, and I can't think of a better candidate than King Mike.

"ADAMS LICKS BALLS"

Any young entreprenuer should be able to sell at least 10,000 of those t-shirts on campus prior to the Arizona State game.

Seriously, last week I sat next to a guy that was selling shirts that said "Our Cox Beats Your Cocks" and he had made $3,000.00.

I'm just sayin.

I'm sure the real reason he won't talk about money in public is simply legal CYAing in case he decided to use $10K in University money for a relatives graduation party again.

I have not donated money to UGA since 2003. Instead, I put the money into CDs. If Adams leaves, I will cash in the CDs when they mature and donate all funds, including the interest, to the University. I don't care what anyone thinks of Adams, his significant sin is what he did to Vince Dooley and the Jim Harrick situation. Adams' attempt to attack certain traditions is contemptible. I just dislike him.
