If you tailgate on North Campus....

Clean your crap up after you tailgate. This is a damn joke. This is the kind of crap that ends up with tailgating rules that cripple everyone's fun. If you don't have the God given sense to bring a damn trash bag to campus to pack your filth into, then tailgate at a bar. Here's the image....

I help run a tailgate for 40, 50 and sometimes 75 people, and I NEVER leave a mess like this. Ever. If I were Adams, I wouldn't make a rule about bad tailgate behavior. I'd instead work with the Athens PD to fine everyone that litters like this $500. Then I'd make you spend the next home game bagging garbage around Campus for 4+ hours pre-game so that you couldn't tailgate at all.

Yes, we need more garbage cans on campus. I know it, and you know it. But there are these places called "grocery stores" that sell these things called "trash bags." BUY SOME. We're going to go from 1-2 night games per year to 3+ from now on. If you continue to leave North Campus wrecked like this, you're going to screw it up for everyone.

We'll end up with tailgate rules like they have at Arizona State. No fun until 3 hours before game time and no hard liquor. I swear some folks have no home training.

Here's an educational video on how to not make such a huge mess.

Post this to your FaceBook status so others can see what kind of mess it is.

That is a disgrace. I would rather have the 3 hour rule than see my campus look like that. And I made fun of the Aubies for rolling their own town.....geez

Not to mention the smell on North Campus today was nearly unbearable...but damnit I love night games

Anonymous said...

Pathetic, along with the complaints of folks stealing from tailgating sites. This pisses me off.

Oh my god. I can't believe I never realized how much Chuck Dowdle sounds like Harry Caray.

I really want to make some crack about always throwing my tailgate trash in Adams' yard but, Damn! Never really a huge fan of night games (must be the So. Ga. in me) but I think the crew behind that mess operates day or night.

Anonymous said...

Like what was said earlier, even today (2 days later), north campus smelled literally like a dumpster. I thought I just smelled the dumpsters by the library when I first walked up, but it was that whole quad infront of the library and laws school.

Anonymous said...

Did our fans leave that mess or did Spurrier get into the trash cans after the game in a fit of rage? Really hope for our sake it was the latter.

rbubp said...

And that is why so many students and faculty hate (and always have hated) the tailgaters. The intrusion is often disgraceful.

Anonymous said...

you should have seen it after the bama game last year. twice as bad. embarrassing.

SC Dawg said...

Despicable, disgraceful, rude,
inconsiderate, irresponsible, etc.

And then fans complain about the University's treatment of tailgaters.

Anonymous said...

Lay the blame on the university for not placing more trash bins around north campus. There were barely any out there, which makes it seem like the school really doesnt give a rats ass about it, or they want it to look so bad that they can justify placing more rules.

Anonymous said...

There is no way you can blame that mess on anyone else besides the stupid rednecks who left it.

I have just about given up going to games entirely because it is suck a pain in the ass now.

After seeing that, I understand why.

Anonymous said...

IMO, They should record license plate #'s and document who was where with a camera. Then Fine accordingly. BY the way...$500 is to cheap. Should be $2000 fine, plus litter pick duty.

Anonymous said...

The recycling stations and the trash bins are great ideas.

Just need more of them.

There is a huge amount of people in that area and the bins fill up quickly.

Also, if they are not emptied several times during the day, they serve no purpose.

Chris said...

That is pathetic but not surprising... I tailgate on North Campus and ended up cleaning up some students crap next to us before I left for the game.

A disgrace...

Then again I finally realized I was the "old" guy because everyone came over to our tailgate to ask for napkins, paper towels, lighter fluid etc.

Anonymous said...

NO, You don't blame the University for you trashing their yard. We are both stockholders of this great University and guests here. Bring a couple bags, take your trash if no receptacle is available. Their is no right ot dump trash because someone else didn't have enough trash cans for YOUR trash.

Which one of these groups do you want to be in? What reputation do you want?

Heck, I can tell in advance just how bad North Campus will look after the game by simply noticing all the fat slobs I see tailgating. Like most of America these days, we have a ton of disgustingly out of shape fans who stuff their faces and throw back beer like we're about to re-enter prohibition again. I mean, its pretty simple to me---why would you expect all our lard ass fans to care about North Campus when they obviously don't even care about their own health? Think about it.

You say I'm stretching things too far? The next time you see a fat person getting out of their car, take a peek inside. 95 out of 100 times it will be an utter mess, just like their overall physique. With that being said, I will say that college students by far are the worst polluters...but most are immature 18-23 year olds that sadly don't know better. I don't give them a pass, but I'm certainly going to judge some 40 year old person quite a bit harsher than I am the drunk college student.

Anonymous said...

I can't believe the idiots above who are blaming the university for not providing more trash bins. Hey genius...its YOUR responsibility to manage your own trash (you know, by doing simple little things like bringing your own trash bags.) Those comments above perfectly highlight what is wrong with America today---self responsibility is almost non-existent while those same lazy people want everything done for them.

I'm guessing those same people voted for Obama and just love the idea of a cradle to grave nanny state. Lastly, regarding polluters and punishment, I think we should go the route of Singapore and other Asian countries---if you are caught polluting and/or leaving your trash behind, you will endure a public flogging with 50 lashes in front of everyone three hours before the next home game. They can call it "the slob whop" or something like that.

I guarantee you littering would drop to almost nothing immediately.

Anonymous said...

To all those championing extra police, closed circuit cameras, etc. etc.

Guess which is cheaper?

a) any of the above

OR

b) banning tailgating on North Campus

Don't think you wouldn't have the entire group of administration, faculty, and even students (for example, the law school) that have to smell that pile of she-at for weeks entirely behind "b".

I don't think any of us claim to be perfect, but that is just pathetic.

One other suggestion...they could charge entry fees to tailgate. That would keep out a lot of the jack-holes and would help pay for the repair of the lawn, porta potties, etc.

Anonymous said...

A good rule of thumb: if you bring it in take it out. Sometimes the limited trash cans get full so plan on taking your trash home with you or just don't come at all and trash your own lawn or living room like this!

Ross said...

In no means am I taking up for anyone who purposely leaves a mess like this but in past years that I have tailgated on NC, it's not the tailgaters who leave the worst mess.

Many a game I would leave my area with all the trash bag or in trash cans only to come back and have all the trash cans flipped over, coolers raided of all beer, and tents turned on their side. A lot of damage is done by people leaving the game early and taking the shortest route to downtown, which happens to be through NC.

For the price the university pays for cleanup, two cops stationed by the library would stop half this mess. And they will also be close at hand to write those tickets for those who purposefully leave this mess, quickly recouping their cost. But I agree with Anon 8:18, tailgating will be banned first.

That video makes me very sad.
Buy trash bags.
Just put your trash in said bag.
It is a very simple concept.

Unknown said...

3 hours before? The flogging should be a halftime event. It would be far more amusing than those punt and toss competitions they do sometimes. Maybe we could work a Redcoat routine around it. I could see it now: "The Redcoats are coming... to kick your ass for not cleaning up after yourselves."

But yeah, back when I lived on campus I despised tailgaters. I do wonder how many of the more slovenly ones actually went to school at UGA. I can't imagine seeing the aftermaths each post-game Monday and still contributing to the problem. One of our tailgate crew is fanatical about trash pickup but even when he's not around, we still don't leave anything behind.

Anonymous said...

IF they were given out 2k fines.. how many would they have given out that day?? Heck they would've made $50,000 just off fines.

That Covers a lot of things**

Anonymous said...

This is embarrassing. I mean, I can see how things could get messy, but it literally looked like a damn landfill out there. I am curious, does anyone know what the grove looks like on a sunday morning? I imagine nothing like this at all. Take some responsibility folks.

Anonymous said...

To me, the most ironic part is that all of the people who made that mess were undoubtedly decked out in all of their UGA gear and have surely told anyone who would listen what "huge fans" they are. I don't understand how on the one hand you can be such a "huge UGA fan" and on the other you can use the campus as a trash dump and toilet. And then to have the audacity to justify such behavior...way to keep it classy, dumbasses.

Anonymous said...

We have absolutely got to do a better job of getting rid of the garbage at UGA. Unfortunately, I don't think the physical plant will accept Dr. Adams.

As for the trash, clean up your mess you backwoods losers...or stay at home.

Anonymous said...

If you bring your own trash bags and bag the trash, they will pick up the bags on Sunday. How hard is that? The problem is the younger crowds parents did everything for them and they don't have any respect for anybody or anybody elses property. Good grief, they were handing out trash bags in the East Green St lot and told us, just bag it and it will be picked up. Slobs. And the ones on here blaming the university for not enough trash cans are the ones trashing the north campus. Idiots. And they are the ones that will be running our country one day. Makes you feel warm and fuzzy doesn't it?

Unknown said...

Thanks for the post PWD, this is something that needs to be addressed. I've complained for years about the idiots who leave North Campus in shambles. I wish I could have more faith in the human race to think that we can fix the problem ourselves before the University fixes it for us, but I'm afraid that probably won't be the case.

Dawgnoxious said...

Anon @ 8:18,
A University cop giving out $500 tickets for littering would be a profit center.

Seriously, one cop walking around giving out tickets would send little shockwaves through the Quad and get people looking at the ground around them.

The University doesn't provide enough garbage cans, but there are enough people with degrees at our tailgate that we figured out what to do: we bought extra large garbage bags. When the bag provided by the University got full, I tied it off, put it on the ground, and put one of our bags in the paper trashcan. It took 30 seconds.

Anonymous said...

Anon @ 8:07:

So funny you brought the political thing into this.

I was thinking earlier that the people who did this were mostly fat non-alums who still sport 'W' stickers on their trucks.

These are the same people who think that stroking a $6000.00 check, likely paid for as a "business expense," gives them carte blanche to put their trash wherever they damn well please, without thinking of the potential ramifications.

These same people will piss and moan next year when tailgating rules are tightened up, and blame the UGA administration for exerting too much control over game day.

Funny how people can look at the same situation totally differently.

We are probably both right to some degree.

Unknown said...

Anon 9:11,

I've been to North Campus. It's mostly students and recent alums.

Regardless of political affiliation, it's not the older crowd.

Trey said...

This is easy, people. If you make trash, you deal with trash. It's not anyone's problem but your own.

I have a feeling that this is mostly the amateurs. Professional tailgaters are potty-trained.

Personally, I am in favor of a nominal fee for tailgating. You could have reserved spots (we do practically anyway), and you could keep the amateurs on the outskirts of campus. Then, you know who is responsible for a certain area and accountability is ratcheted up a notch.

This will happen sooner rather than later.

PatinDC said...

But I find it sad that people care so little . I have never tailgated with a group that would do something like this. I love North Campus and find it the heart and soul of the school.

I mean really. You carried it all in, carry it back out. If it's too much work, than there are plenty of bars and resturants within walking distance of the stadium, (Not Guthrie's though. Crying a little here)

Thank you for the post. As a recently graduated student that lived on/near campus for all five years, I was constantly sickened by the state of campus on a Sunday morning after gameday.

The people that work their butts off to clean up don't get paid nearly enough to deal with our leftover sh**. If you claim to love UGA, clean up after yourself.

Anonymous said...

I know there are more people on North Campus, but where I tailgate at on South Campus looks nothing like this when the day is done. Might it have something to do with the different type of crowds that are drawn to each? I think so...

Anonymous said...

This makes me thankful for my tailgating spot on South Campus.

Anonymous said...

I'm glad none of these slobs tailgate on South Campus. The "Not Enough Trash Cans" excuse is like saying you got busted for pot because there wasn't a toilet to flush your roach.

Anonymous said...

I don't need to see the video. It makes me sad like the Native American in the old littering PSA.

I am not trying to be funny here. I could see this coming from the minute I pulled into Downtown Athens at 2:30 PM drove past North Campus to see it overflowing with tents and people.

I think Adams has a right to ban tailgating on North Campus immediately. It is obvious to me that our fans cannot be trusted to do the right thing. If we want to cut out the riff raff, then we should tie the right to North Campus tailgating to their Hartman fund donations.

If you want a space, spend the $. Each tailgate space comes with 10 tickets/wristbands. Have patrols in there to restrict underage drinking and those inside without a wristband. Tailgating can start up to 5 hours before a game. Each site is provided with 2 trash bins and 10 trash bags - if you need to use more bring your own. You can set up your self and bring your own generators or pay extra for power, set up, breakdown and secure storage during the game.

Central Florida just started a 3 hour rule this year and they play their games off campus with huge parking tailgating areas far less picturesque as North Campus. Plus they did not make public announcements about it except in the ticket literature sent to ticket holders. Thus all the folks who did not read their infor or did not have tickets had to pay big fines or find something else to do before their first home game on 9/5.

It sounds draconian and punitive, but I would like to see some of these idiots move on to somewhere else.

Frankly, I agree that the North Campus crowd is mostly made up of students. North Campus isn't getting trashed by "out of towners", it's getting trashed by the student body.

SSB Charley said...

Agree with PWD. I walked through the crush of humanity from the Arch to the library on Saturday, and the average age looked to be about 20-22. This problem isn't the result of redneck sidewalk alums, it's the result of drunk undergrads. The crowd density has increased about 100 fold since I finished law school in 2001. It used to be that you could throw a football on the quad. Now you can barely walk through. I won't be traversing through there anytime soon on a gameday.

Scott H. said...

The truth is that it doesn't matter who is doing it, be it drunk undergrads or rowdy rednecks. Let's find solutions and it starts with everybody telling somebody else about it. I definitely agree with PWD to post this to your Facebook page. I'm amazed how much response I got within ten minutes of doing so.

Hunkering Hank said...

That changed my opinion right there. I used to think it was ridiculous to even think of closing North Campus from tailgating, but now I know better. These drunk fools have no respect for the University. Close it down. Or, perhaps, as PWD suggests, it may become a strong revenue producer for UGA via ticketing.

JackSpratDawg said...

I am no fan whatsoever of Mike Adams, but frankly could not blame him if he banned all tailgating on North Campus. Auburn began a "pay to tailgate" policy for prime spots on campus just this year. I think Ole Miss has something similar for The Grove as well. I think it likely we will see something similar on North Campus sooner rather than later...

On Monday morning, I parked in the North Campus Deck to go to work.

Walked 20 feet, then had to avoid a vomit spot (in the deck).

The deck stairwell smelled...questionable.

Walking to campus, one couldn't go 50 feet without seeing food, broken glass, or worse either on or beside the sidewalk (on Monday morning, mind you).

Walking downtown for lunch, I passed two groups of prospective students; all of us had to navigate around leftover charcoal, stinky food, etc., making a tremendous impression, I'm sure.

Anonymous said...

isn't this where the Red & Black is deservedly suppose to call the fans on north campus a$$ holes?

It was my sons first game. I couldn't wait to walk through North Campus after the game and show him the sights. It was awful - and left a lasting impression on him. When we got home, all he wanted to tell his friends about was the trash and beer bottles and how you could not step without walking on trash. Not the lasting impression I wanted him to have. And just a note - I agree more trash cans are needed, but a few I saw were empty!

mitch said...

The crowd on North Campus by the library is students. They are the ones trashing north campus. Tailgating on north campus seems to be where pretty much ALL the students tailgate. I think the biggest issue is how many students are on north campus, it was packed at 3:00 and its like that every game now. However it would help if the university would hire cops to patrol the area when everyone leaves for thegame because drunks go through there and will knock over trash cans or go through the trash.

mitch said...

The reason some are empty is because of homeless people and drunks dumping over the trash cans to collect cans and try to find food.

Anonymous said...

North Campus should belong to everybody on game days, not just the hell-raisers who could care less about the very special place they disgrace. There should be no tailgating permitted on those historic quadrangles in order that all guests to campus can enjoy them. There is also the demonstrated damage that this does to the trees and grass. The compaction is killing the trees. There was no grass remaining after football season last year, just red dirt. Don't we deserve better? If we do not get a handlle on this and control it then we certainly do not.

Anonymous said...

If everyone cleaned up their own trash you would be eliminating quite a few jobs for Georgia grads.

dawgnotdog said...

Let me add my 2 cents. Yes, the bums are part of the problem, but they are no more than 10-15% of it. The bigger problem is people either A) Not using trash bags, B) Not changing out full bags, just piling it on top, or C) Using other stuff as trash cans.

My initial solutions...skewer me at will.

A. No glass bottles. It can be done, trust me.

B. No styrofoam coolers.

C. Emptying of the dumpsters during the day.

D. Run a "mule" thru on the sidewalks and let people get their bags gone instead of just lying on the ground.

Is it gonna make it totally clean immediately, no. Will it help tremendously, and maybe allow tailgating to continue on North Campus, yes.

It is going to take a combination of fans, University administration, and law enforcement to stop this carnage.

But it is time to quit pointing fingers and get things done, NOW.

stick jackson said...

I think adding a brief shot of a Native American warrior -- looking out over the carnage from the library steps, with a tear sliding down his noble visage -- to the end of the video would really bring this point home. Or Loran Smith; Loran could definitely fill that role. Work on that, Paul.

But seriously folks. Regardless of who is doing this, it is a disgrace to the University.

And by the way, I seriously doubt it is rampaging armies of homeless people ripping open neat bags of trash the tidy fans have left behind. I'm all in favor of blaming imaginary poor black people for the misdeeds of white college graduates, but that's awfully weak, even by the standards of the genre.

mitch said...

Im not saying its all the bums doing it but they are part of it as they do dump over trash cans to get cans and bottles. That wont be stopped unless they patrol the area with cops. And i will be posting this link on facebook multiple times between now and arizona state. People need to clean their shit up, its not hard.

dawgnotdog said...

One more thing, for the guy feeding the birds with cheetos.

Especially at night games, the rats are going to get the food long before the birds are.

war willie said...

You people are so clueless.

Is there some trash thrown on the ground by UGA students, rednecks, etc...of course.

BUT...when I walked to the stadium, the North Campus area wasn't that bad at all. It's the COCK/AUBIE/BAMA fans during the game or some drunk frat boy UGA loser. Get some cops in that area during the games and the problem will be solved. I get my crap stolen from there all the time during the game so I know people are f'in around in that area during the games.

Do you really think we are responsible for this mess??? Give me a break. (Funny when Auburn, SC or Bama come to Athens this happens and only at night).

Acting like this mess is a result of tailgaters in that area is a complete joke! Posting these type articles will take us back to the Family Fun Zone days...

Toon Dawg said...

It's not just UGA students - Athens has grown to include students from non-UGA schools like Athens Tech, Gainesville College satellite campuses, Piedmont College, etc. and those students come to party just like UGA students. You have a huge influx of young people that you didn't have 10 - 15 yrs ago.

Anonymous said...

I only come to 1 or 2 UGA games a year...and it has always been this bad in the several areas I have tailgated. We need to learn from other SEC schools and charge for tailgating. And also be smart and not be slobs.
And for those blaming the other schools, I was on North Campus tailgating this weekend and all the main mess was from the Bulldawg nation. Let's not blame others and take responsibility and clean up after ourselves!

Anonymous said...

I agree that this is pathetic and a disgrace. We bring trash bags to our tailgate. But tell this, why with all of the money that football brings into this school, does the university not provide adequate trash cans on campus during tailgates? They do not provide hardly anything on Myers Quad and the quad is packed by game time. Not only would we not end up with this much of a mess, but you would think it would cut down on the cost of the pick up crew afterwards.

dawgnotdog said...

Anon 1:38...I can speak on this a little, at least historically.

The "concession" for campus cleanup is bid out like a lot of other stuff, but here is the kicker (or at least was for recent history).

The guy who won the sanitation contract had been demoted from his regular University job for accepting kickbacks, was suing to get reinstated to his previous level, and was using the proceeds from the UGAAA to pay his legal bills.

He was not fulfilling the terms of the contract in a number of ways, but a major one was not providing the number of cardboard trashcans as required.

Of course, there is really no way to count them on Friday night, so he got away from it for years.

May still be getting away with it.

The Watch Dawg said...

That is truly a sad sight.

For everyone pointing fingers, shame on all of you. You can't pin this on "the fat people," or "the rednecks," or "the kids,"... a mess like this is everybody's fault. Because for everyone that left their trash on the ground, there are many more people that saw it and didn't say anything. It's OUR campus too (at least those of us that are alums, or current students) and we have an obligation to do our part as well. That includes telling others to pick up their garbage if they must be told.

I wish we had a 1:00 a clock home game prior to the ASU game.

I would have shot about 2 minutes or more worth of video of North Campus and attached to a message from Adams, Evans and Richt. I would then email it to every season ticket holder, plus shown the video on the in-stadium screen pre-game and at half-time.

Perhaps that would get everyone's attention.

Last year after the Alabama game NC looked just as bad. As someone who arrived at 7am and tailgated all the way up to gametime that day, I can wholeheartedly say that North Campus did not look like that when we headed down to Sanford Stadium. Our group cleaned up all of our trash before the game and placed it near the trash bins, and when we returned all of our bags were ripped open or overturned. This did not happen during any other home game during 2008, all of which were played during the day.

Now of course there are idiots who don't bother to clean their trash (which is disgraceful), but there are also people tearing through the trash during the game. There are enough cops in Athens on a fall saturday that I think a few could monitor the situation both before and during the games, to make sure these sorts of things won't happen again.

I work for the University and have reviewed security footage from Saturday. All the trash that you see is left by tailgaters. The trash bins were not emptied at all during the day, which probably lead to a lot of the trash being on the ground. There was a group of Athens "natives" and what appeared to be some student organization that picked up a truck load of bottles and cans to take to the recycling.

But they had it all cleaned up in 5 hours and North Campus was back to normal by 2:30 Sunday...well minus the smell.

P.S. There were quite a few "natives" digging through coolers that people left out while they went to the game. And let's just say that all their food and drinks were not there when they returned.

So laying some of the blame on the University means I dont clean up after myself? What a dumb conclusion some of you came to. My logic is that if everyone knows this trash will be around, place some more trash cans to help PREVENT the issue from escalating. Get some security out there to prevent looters from further destroying the responsible peoples bags full of trash. You know, people like myself who cleans up after myself.

DISGUSTING,NO excuse for such.Nor does the blaming only "fat" and"backwoods"people.I see many students acting more like 13 yr. olds than grown young people. These same "old"people went there for many years w/out such problems. One look will tell you this is just stupid jackasses.Clean up your own damn messes.UGA is a special place, treat it as such.BTW you will be fussing about the new tailgating policiesvery soon , if not.Sanford stadium belongs to the entire BULLDOG nation, act like guest not hoods.(young, old, students etc.)

One of the best dawgs I know is a Davidson alum. He doesn't have a degree from UGA (and he has three), but he bleeds red and black.

It's been a while since I have had the pleasure or the ability to go to a home game? But I have never seen a mess like that in all the games I have attended through the years.

Some of the older fans need to patrol those areas and shame these heathens into some decency and respect.

What a sad testament to what use to be one of the greatest fall adventures in all the land.
