Level II penalties for Bauerle

Great news for Georgia swim coach Jack Bauerle. I'd heard it was touch and go, so I'm excited he'll get to come back in April 2015. Good news for UGA's swim program, too.

NCAA spring sports quick roundup

Quick roundup:
Men's Tennis lost to UNC in the round of 16
Women's Tennis lost to Florida in the Quarterfinals

In good news, softball will face NC State in the Athens regional today at 2pm, needing to beat the Wolfpack twice to advance to the NCAA Super Regional.

In other good news, men's golf won their regional golf match and will go to NCAA Championships to be held May 23-28 at Prairie Creek Golf Club in Hutcheson, Kansas.

In awesome news, men's track and field hold a slim lead over Arkansas at the SEC Outdoors, and the women are second.

Master's Week

"That shit gets you religious."

You better believe it will. If you've never been to Augusta National, you are missing out. Last year I had a chance to be there on Wednesday, which was awesome.

Saturday's tailgating will honor the food heritage of Augusta National. 'Cause it'll get you religious.

Harris English wins St. Jude on PGA Tour

Wow. Big day for Harris English. Georgia golf got a couple of shout outs today, too. He had a couple of great shots on 17 after Mickleson hit a pretty good approach and put pressure on him.

Congrats to a Damn Good Dawg.

Weekend UGA Sports roundup

  • The Diamond Dawgs beat the Gators 2 of 3 at home. We beat Tech earlier in the week to claim that season series, as well. That is the feel good part of the weekend for Georgia baseball.
  • Men's Golf advance to the NCAA Championships, finishing second in the Tempe regional. Those will take place May 28-June 2 at the Capital City Club in Atlanta.
  • Women's Tennis fall to Stanford in the NCAA Quarterfinals. Silva Garcia and Kate Fuller will advance as the one seed in doubles for the individual championships. Maho Kowase and Lauren Herring will compete in the singles individual championships.
  • Men's Tennis has advanced to face Virginia in the final four of the Men's side. UVA is undefeated on the season. Balls are in the air at 2pm today, with live scoring on Georgiadogs.com.
  • In women's softball, Georgia lost in the regional finals to host Arizona State. As a side note, 6 of the 16 teams in the Super Regionals are SEC teams.
Of course, there is other news involving Spring sports, as David Perno will reportedly be let go today. He ends his UGA coaching career at 384-324-1. I'll have more on that, and the search, later.

Diaz taking the very high road

Georgia tennis coach Manny Diaz is handling having his top player leave the team the week the NCAA championships start very well. You can read between the lines plenty. Trust me, I have. Anyway, there is a pretty compelling story here for the Dawgs if they actually win the NCAA championships.

Now, I encourage Singh to take the very high road in the future when he is asked about it. I believe he owes that to Coach Diaz.

Former Dawg Harris English Playing the Weekend in The Open Championship

With SEC media days bring the unbridled excitement of college football upon us, I'd not payed much attention to the British Open, with the exception of Loran Smith's running commentary on the food and drink there. Of course, Bubba Watson is there by virtue of his Masters win in April, but Harris English qualified in May for The Open Championship with a record 60. He also carded a ho-hum 62 in the qualifying.

Not only did he qualify, he made the weekend and is currently on the course sitting in the mid-40s. Not bad for a first timer qualifier.

- Bubba will tee off very shortly at -2, which has him in or near the top ten.

Nationwide Tour Comes to Athens

The Stadion Classic at UGA will be played this week at the UGA Golf Course. The tournament primarily benefits need based schollys at UGA, but through the Tickets Fore CharityTM program, Athens area non-profits can benefit as well.

If you are going and haven't bought your tickets yet, simply go here, select your charity of choice, and purchase. The options range from children advocacy organizations to local churches and the proceeds directly benefit the Athens area organization you select.

Our Master's Champion

I don't think there is anything I can add to the pure joy of Bubba winning the Masters. He is everything you want in an representative of UGA. Wears his heart and his faith on his sleeve. He is Red and Black to the core.

And all he does is win.

Anyway, I just saw this and thought it was too good not to post it.

My only wish is they would have let Uncle Vern do the honors in Butler Cabin last night.

Brian Harman Sets New Course Record

Brian Harman put himself in contention at the Honda Classic in Palm Beach by shattering the course record with a 61, breaking the course record by 3 shots. Harman, who won his tour card at Q school last year, was joined on the leader board by Harris English. Harman is T5 at -6; English is T8 at -5.

English will be in the fourth from the last group, paired with Jimmy Walker (which is dyn-o-mite). Harman will be paired with Augusta State alum Vaughn Taylor in the third from final group.

NBC has the coverage this afternoon from 3-6pm.

In Other News

Men's Golf and baseball just got a little less deep:
  • Closer Tyler Maloof will be out for at least a month with a muscle strain in his arm. Maloof tied the single season save record last year, but had a big ERA. We were looking to have him get stronger in close situations. Now we might not have him available until well into the SEC schedule. Blake Dieterich and Bryan Benzor are the top candidates to get the ball for now.
  • Bryden Macpherson has decided to withdraw from school and take up golf as a profession. Macpherson qualified for The Masters with a win in last year's British Amateur Open. Macpherson was the SEC Freshman of the year and a big part of our National Championship runner up finish last year. I expect to hear some muffled 'Go Dawgs' when he tees it up in Augusta.

Former Golf Dawgs Shine

With the news that All-Americans Harris English and Russell Henley were chosen for the USA Walker Cup (the amateur equivalent of the Ryder Cup) Team.  If you didn't know, Henley became the second amateur to win a Nationwide event with his win in Athens at the Stadion Classic.   Not to be outdone, English won the 2011 Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational in Columbus, OH last month.

No word on if English got a free tattoo with that.

Good luck to two DGDs.

Dawgs lose to Jags in NCAA Golf Finals

Augusta State down the Dawgs 3-2 to win back to back NCAA Championships in Golf.  Russell Henley and Bryden Mcphereson pick up Georgia's wins in Stillwater.

Congrats on a good season for Chris Haack's team.  With strong seasons from sophomores Mcpeherson and Mitchell, the future looks bright for the Men's Golf team.  Many thanks to Seniors Henley, Rob Bennett, Harris English, and Hudson Swafford, DGDs all.

No word on if the two teams will meet at Washington-Wilkes Country Club for a season ending rubber match.

Dawgs Top Duke Blue Devils

Dawgs advance over Duke in the NCAA Golf Championship semi-final match 3 matches to 2.  They will face defending national champion Augusta State.  Yeah, I had to check to make sure I saw that right, too.  But the Jaguars won last year (I had to check the mascot, too) and advanced to the finals by defeating host Oklahoma State 3 matches to 2.

Russell Henley, Harris English and Bryden McPhereson won their matches to give the Dawgs the win.

Georgia faced Augusta State early in the season in a stroke play tournament in Macon in the Brickyard Invitational, besting the Jags by one shot to win the tourney.

Live scoring and video will be available at NCAA.com at 1pm.

Isner on Letterman

In case you went to sleep early or watch something else with your "late" nights, here's John Isner's appearance on David Letterman last night.

Federer in fifteen minutes, huh? Didn't Izzy take a set off the greatest tennis player ever in 2007 (right before the Oklahoma State game in Athens) at the US Open?
