EA Disappoints with Desmond Howard Cover for NCAA 2006

Preface - I'm really excited about the game. The new recruiting and game play features look great. But the cover? What a gigantic shank. EA Sports announced yesterday that Desmond Howard, 1991 Heisman Trophy Winner, will be on the cover of the new NCAA 2006 game.

They have done this to support the launch of a new game play mode called "Race for the Heisman." In the mode that most of us are familiar with called Dynasty, you are playing the role of "Coach". You're responsible for building your team on the field and via recruiting.

In the new "Race for the Heisman" mode, you are an individual athlete on a team. You are recruited by a school to play a certain position. The game then tracks you as a player through your 3-5 year career at the school from newbie to the NFL. The goal is to win the Heisman. At the end of the 4 years, you can choose to start over as a new player or you can move on and keep playing the game in Dynasty mode.

It sounds like a cool feature. But putting Howard on the cover of the game just seems like a waste to me.

Personally, I don't understand why they don't deliver custom covers to different parts of the country. Athlon and Lindy can do this with their magazines. You're telling me that EASports can't? Be serious.

I'm looking forward to the new game. It sould be a blast. But the cover choice was weak. The new recruiting features should be *awesome*. They are giving you the ability to recruit all through the season instead of after the season ends. Very cool.

EASports has a good interview with the game's lead producer. Check it out.

Below is a screen shot of Fred Gibson pulling one down vs. a Gator in the 2006 game. Did you notice that they added the cocktail party's official logo on the field? As I understand it, the game is going to have new UGA's 3rd Deck on the field.

Another classic screen shot -- PJ Daniels running over one of our DBs. This is a funny screen shot b/c:
A: PJ Daniels is never healthy for the UGA game.
B: Even EASports knows that Bobby Dodd stadium will be full of red clad fans. Check out the mix of red to gold in the stands. lol!
