Blog Poll Week 2 -- My Ballot

Here's my Blog Poll ballot. Last week's ranking in parenthesis.

Week 2
1. Southern Cal (1) - obviously

2. Texas (2) - Thank heavens for DVR!

3. Iowa (3) - Domination of Fictional State U is rarely impressive. Unless, you dominate a ranked Fictional State U.

4. Michigan (4) - unimpressive this week, but so were others.

5. Tennessee (9) - For now, I still think they are hair better than UGA.

6. Georgia (10) - anyone that still has Boise ranked at all should have UGA as a Top 3 team.

7. Louisiana State (8) - idle. This just in. The LSU vs. ASU game will be held in Tempe.

8. Louisville (6) - I'm pretty familiar with Kentucky. And to get bogged down with only 3 points vs the Cats in the 2nd Half is not a performance that says onward and upward in the polls.

9. Ohio State (12) - Bring on the Horns.

10. Virginia Tech (11) - This team will win the ACC unless FSU and Miami improve *dramatically* over what we saw tonight.

11. Purdue (14) - idle.

12. Florida (16) - they looked better than many other teams in the middle of last week's poll.

13. Florida State (15) - I think this defense could beat Boston College with Rosie O'Donnell as the QB. [Photo: Rosie couldn't possibly be worse than Weatherford]

14. Miami (5) - The word "special" in Special Teams is supossed to mean "exceptional" or "Unique". It does not normally refer to slow children who ride short buses.

15. Oklahoma (7) - This is a pick that I'm uncomfortable with.

16. Virginia (18) - They struggled to put a way a WMU team that went 1-10 last year.

17. Texas Tech (23) - I'll believe Leach beats Texas and Oklahoma when I see it. But this is a team that can make the Cotton Bowl.

18. Boston College (20) - If they beat FSU, I'll be amazed. I'm very uncomfortable with this pick.

19. Oregon (21) - Yes. They struggled with Houston in the first half, but they pulled away later.

20. Arizona State (22) - The game will be held at Tempe. Not Baton Rouge.

21. Georgia Tech (Unranked) - These guys MUST work on their defensive secondary. That said, they picked a great year to have bad DBs given how few exceptional QBs are on their schedule from the ACC.

22. Auburn (13) - What a waste.

23. Notre Dame (unranked) - I feel obligated to rank these guys because they beat a team that i had ranked last week. Although, I very much regret ranking Pitt in the first place. Go Blue.

24. Colorado (25) - On Sept. 24th, this team plays the Canes in Miami. We'll know what they have then.

25. Clemson (unranked) - The Tigers play Maryland at College Park and Miami at home the next two weeks. If this team lucky that Coach Fran can't count? Or are they good? We'll know soon.

Falling out of the poll: Boise *17), TAMU (19) and Pitt (24).
Almost making the poll: Cal, Minnesota and TCU

Yes, it's a contridiction to have OU still ranked and TCU unranked. But I saw enough half assed mid-major ball this weekend to be in no mood to rush to annoint any of those programs as the next "BCS Buster". If OU implodes further, I'll drop the hammer on them. If TCU keeps winning, I'll rank them.

The age of the "BCS Buster" might be coming to a quick and merciful end. Bowling Green was dominated in the second half by a very average Wisconsin team. Boise State might be better than what they showed, but if you can't win on the road you won't get any respect.

It's hard to call TCU a "BCS Buster" because this is an old SWC team that still has the taste of the big time in it's mouth.

Personally, I'd be glad to see the "BCS Buster" go the way of the Dodo.

Come on, what's the best thing about the opening weekend of the NCAA Basketball Tournament? Seeing the overrated major conference teams getting punked, so you can point and laugh at them, and say "Ha ha, you lost to Directional State U!"

I think we all overrated Bowling Green because of Omar Jacobs.

Georgia is a very good major conference team and one that beats a lot of other major conference teams lose to frequently, so expecting Boise State to come into "The Hedges" and beat them was probably a pipe dream at best.

Hey Paul, too much love for Louisville. They're not really a top 10 team. They would lose 4-5 games in a good conference, i.e. SEC, Big 10, ACC. Heck, they might even drop a couple in the Big Least this year?

I agree that Lville may be overrated, but it's unlikely they are going to lose more than 1 this year. Did you see any of the WVU vs. Syracuse game? That performance set offensive football back 20 years. And Pitt is awful.

There aren't many losses in their schedule.

Go ahead, drop the hammer on Oklahoma already. They don't deserve to be ranked after the absolutely putrid display they put on this weekend. It's not like TCU played well, they tried to go NC State on themselves with the penalties and the blocked punt and still won.

Paul,

I agree with the other poster about Louisville. Its my belief that rankings should be about who is the best team, not who will go undefeated. You're justification for Louisville being in the Top 10 is flimsy, saying you have them there because they play in a poor BE conference thus won't lose.

With that said, I respect what you write and its always a pleasure to read your blog. But seriously, Louisville? They were hampered by what should be a bottom SEC team. If they played in the Big 12, Big 10, or SEC they'd lose 3-4 for this year, I don't think that justifies a #8 ranking, but then again this is your poll. I just wish people would stop ranking based on who goes undefeated (that gives power to teams to schedule weak) and go based on who seems/looks to be the better team. Louisville will represent the BE, but with how WVU/Syracuse and Pitt looked this first week that's not saying ANYTHING.

Don't drop the hammer on the Sooners yet! Wait untill after the UCLA game on the 17th. I dropped them down to 19th. Let's see if they can actually come up with a game plan in the next couple of weeks.

Who's o-line is worse, OU or Miami?

Actually, that's not what I said. I didn't say that I have them ranked where they are BECAUSE they will go undefeated.

I think they have a good team who WILL go undefeated. I dropped them 2 after their poor 2nd half showing vs. UK. It's still very early in the season.

If they play like they did in the 1st half, this is a Top 10 team. If they play like they did in the 2nd half, they will lose several games and this discussion will be over.

note...swap the word "WILL" for a lower case "could".
