Richt on the Boise Defense

In his press conference today, Richt discussed the movement of the Boise defensive front 7 versus the defense of the SC front 7. He was asked something like "Doesn't Boise usually move around on defense alot more than they did Saturday? Similar to what SC did vs. UCF?" (the question was hard to hear)

He said (paraphrase):
The Boise scheme on defense usually consists of tremendous movement and varying looks. HOWEVER, most of that motion and confusion is created when they go to the 3 down linemen formation defensively. And Boise's 3 down linemen sets are usually in the game when the other team's offense puts its 3 WRs sets into the game. That's why we went with 2 WR sets most of the night.

Essentially, it sounds like Richt bet that if we didn't use many 3 WRs sets that we wouldn't see that crazy defense. He was right. Instead, he used RBs and TEs to create formations that looked 3, 4 and even 5 wide. I talked about this yesterday a bit.

We said that we were able to run our offense without seeing the confusing stuff Boise usually brings out to stop certain personnel groupings.

Kudos to Richt and staff for out working Boise in the film room.

Richt mainly talked about Carolina in the press conference. Those comments can be found here.
