#49 with a Bullet! Dawgs Enter Basketball Poll

There's a new record soaring up the charts and gaining a push from the underground scene. The tune only whispered about until now. A little tune that seemed so impossible only nine months ago. This is a little song called
"Georgia Might Not Suck in Hoops This Year After All."

It's a catchy little number that has worked its way up to #49 on this week's Associated Press Basketball Poll. While it's too early to call this tune a crossover hit or a sensation, it is safe to say that it's exceeding the expectations of the Georgia Fan Base.

The optimists in the Bulldog Nation will see this single vote as the first step in long climb back up to the level that Tubby and Harrick brought us to. They will see the Top 25 and find only 2 SEC teams listed. This will lead them to say "The SEC is really down this year. That's good for us."

The pessimists will see the rankings and say "We haven't played anyone. This vote won't matter after we lose our next three to Nevada, Oregon State and Clemson. Besides, when Felton gets us ranked he'll just bolt because the administration doesn't support hoops."

What does this single vote mean to me? It means that somewhere, somehow, someway, there is a member of the media that felt sorry for us thinks we're good.

Or alternatively, it could mean that Casey Kasem was accidentally given an AP vote and put us at #25 as part of some sort of wacky "Long Distance Dedication" mix-up involving Coach Felton's wife and the tune "Stand by Your Man."

Either way, it's a start. The Dawgs next 3 games are critically important because the SEC Schedule opens tougher than usual. UF (Home), UT (road), SC (road) and UK (home). We need all the confidence that we can muster going into that 4 game stretch.

The realists would say we haven't played anyone, but we've obviously improved a lot and have a decent shot at making postseason play, most likely the NIT.

The next 3 games vs Oregon St, Nevada and Clemson will give us some indication as to what we can expect in conference play. The Oregon State game is huge - it won't be easy since it's all the way across country, but they are the worst team left on our schedule other than Howard and Western Carolina. Must win.

I think you guys are 1 maybe 2 recruiting classes away from being a stout SEC contender if Felton stays the course. I was very impressed with the overall improvement of your team from last year to this year during the ass-whupping you laid on us.

Next step is definitely a legit post threat since those 3's won't rain every single game and you'll be in solid shape. I still think you upset a premier SEC squad this year. Teams that shoot the 3 like you guys do are always in a game.

I sort of agree. Only it could be 1 recruiting season, but more importantly 1 year of maturity for what we have already on scholarship and we'll be fine.

Singleton is the 7 footer that you saw a few weeks ago. He's averaging over 2 blocks a game despite averaging less than 15 minutes per game. As he grows into his body and improves his hands he'll become a better rebounder and hopefully scorer. He's much further along than Luke S was at the same point. And he's coached by David Robinson's old head coach.

Johnson is the kid wearing #1. He has been slowed by an ankle that probably needs surgery. He's got good upside and will come along.

You didn't see Woodbury. He's had a knee injury since the 2nd Game and plays the 3. He looked like our best FR in those first 2 games.

We signed a Top 10 center from Kentucky. He's at Oak Hill and will report for next season.
