Garner Considering Saints Offer

Coach Rodney Garner is considering a job offer with the Saints.

That would be a massive blow to our recruiting efforts. Here is Rivals.com's list of who Garner signed for us in 2006.

I just don't get why he'd want to go there of all places. Job tenure for an NFL coach is ridiculously short. Plus, the Saints are no lock to stay put the next two years. He could be signing up for 3-4 moves over the next 3-4 years. One move to NOLA. Another move to San Antonio (or wherever). Then yet another move to become a Defensive Coordinator in college somewhere b/c this is clearly what that is all about. He wants to put himself into the position to become a defensive coordinator.

When Tuberville named Muschamp as DC instead of Garner, that was a bad sign for Garner. Especially given that Rodney is an Auburn alum.

Deja Vu all over again. I remember saying the same thing when Van Gorder went to be linebackers coach for Jacksonville. Why????
Then within a year he's a head coach.

Garner has D-1 Head Coach written all over him. Great recruiter, puts guys not just in the pros, but the Pro Bowl, played at a big time school, and has coached several solid years at a big time school, even good enough to survive a regime change. After the Auburn and West Virginia games, I'm still shaky on Martinez, and I want to keep Garner at Georgia and off any other SEC sideline as long as I can.

New Orleans is currently the worst coaching gig in the NFL. But if you can survive a year or two and show improvement, hello college Head Coach interviews.

As for Muschamp, great for him, he too will eventually move up. However, being DC for Saban and Tuberville is kind of like having the title of OC under Spurrier or Richt (if he chose to have one), you ain't the guy calling the shots and you never will be. Responsibilities are probably similar to Mike Bobo's on game day. But Muschamp is learning from the best, and it looks good on the resume.
