Favor from Readers: Battle Hymn by Father Tom Vaughn

If you've ever stumbled into 90.1 am (WABE) at exactly 9:00 pm on any Saturday night over the past 21 years, you've heard Jazz Classics host H. Johnson play Father Tom Vaughn's version of "Battle Hymn of the Republic."

It's an incredibly powerful version of Battle Hymn done at the hands of jazz piano master. Amazing stuff. Anyway...I'd like a copy of the song as an MP3 or WAV file. Ideally saved at 128 bits or higher, but I don't really care that much.

If you have a copy, please email me at decaturdawg [at) hotmail . com.

Thanks.

BTW -- I'm not a big jazz fan, but if you ever get a chance to tune into the show at 9:00 pm on a Saturday. Do it. The show always starts with this tune.

FTV's 'Battle Hymn' is really unbelievable. If I'm in the car, I'll turn it to 90.1 at 9:00 just to hear it, then turn the channel. I've looked for it in the past, and I'm nearly certain the host is playing it off vinyl. I can't find a cd recording anywhere.

I think WABE is a great station, but I now live too far from the ATL to get the signal anymore. I listen to it on my computer, and enterprising folks with more computer skills than I have can prolly digitally record it even if it isn't legal. On the other hand, I would bet that 90.1 and/or FTV will let you if you just ask....Just my $.02.

I emailed H. Johnson before and asked for a copy, but he never responded.

In his defense, I think he's been battling prostate cancer for quite some time. (Or some other form of cancer). So he's had bigger fish to fry.

I just googled Father Tom Vaughn, and was amazed at the research that I found, and the overwhelming response to my fathers work. My brother, sister and I are in the process of compiling everything into digital form. Thank you WABE for recognizing the "Battle Hymn" as something that is cherished to play for the last 21 years. As a child, you do not recognize that you are living amongst a master. We are thankful to have such a wonderful person in our lives. Keep listening!

It is from the "Joyful Jazz" LP, only available on vinyl (pending the above mentioned digital compilation). There are other gems on this album, such as a great version of "Fly Me to the Moon".

I found it at a record store on Boylston Street in Boston for 99 cents! It is hard to find, but worth the hunt.

At one point S. Vaughn had made mention that the Vaughns were in the process of compiling all of Father Tom Vaughn's works into digital form. Does anyone know the status on the project and if so when and where the compilation(s) will be available? Does anyone know how to get in touch with S. Vaughn or any of the Vaughn family members? I would love to give a digital compilitation of Father Tom Vaughn's music to my husband for Christmas this year. He is a huge jazz enthusiast and love the works of Father Tom Vaughn. He does so much for our family so it would mean a great deal to me to be able to give him such a memorable gift! Please let me know if you have any information. My email is a_masdon@hotmail.com

Hey Elizabeth! Thank you so much for your willingness to follow up with your uncle. I'm still interested in getting a digital compilation for my husband David. When you find out the progress, will you please email me at a_masdon@hotmail.com - again, thanks.

This is his little sister. Tom is still in California, living with his wife of 51 years. My niece has yet to put his music on CD's. Hopefully she will very soon. Thanks to everyone for their kind comments. All four of his sisters are very proud of him.

I attended St Martins Episcopal Church in the 1970's when Father Vaughn was in charge. While there I attended a concert done by Father Vaughn in the Fireside Room with a drummer and a man on string bass (can't remember their names). I remember "Fly Me To The Moon" like it was yesterday. He was awsome on keys and inspired me to love jazz music. Sure wish I could find his album "Joyful Jazz.". I used to have the vinyl album but wore it out years ago.

I have just stumbled onto this topic -- I attend St. John's church in Midland, Michigan, where Father Vaughn apparently had his first post as a priest back in the mid-1960s. He might be interested in knowing that the church is growing and thriving these days, with many young couples. There were two infant baptisms just yesterday!

To:R Nelson, I too attended Fr.Tom's concert at St Martins in 1971. Vince Tremonte was the drummer. We went all thru school together.
Here it is 2010 and I have often wondered about Fr. T and the drummer. I can find on info if they is still with us or not.

Sadly, there have been no updates, and nothing can be found anywhere online in digital form. Perhaps his death last year delayed then project.

S Vaughn - Andi, I rarely go on this, and I believe it or not am still in the process... I promise to have it done before the end of 2013!

Now this is a deep cut! We'd still love to know about it if it gets done. Tyler
