Richt's Record at UGA

Photo: ESPN

Early last month the guys over at GatorCountry put together an article about the first 5 years in the SEC for Richt, Spurrier, Fulmer and others. (scout.com membership required to read it)

Richt stacks up nicely to some of the all-timers in the league when looking at his first 5 years in the league.

Although, I disagree with the writer's conclusion that Fulmer's first 5 full years are more impressive than Richt's. Richt has won more games, more head to head matchups, more SEC Titles and more SEC East titles than Fulmer won his first 5 years. Richt even beat the Gators once in his first five years. Something Fulmer didn't do in his first full five years.

A further look at Richt's first five years (With apologies to Kyle King who usually covers this ground):
    Richt overall: 52-13
    At home: 27-4
At a neutral site: 6-7 (Jacksonville, SECC and Bowls)
In an opponent's home stadium: 19-2
In the SEC Championship Game: 2-1
In Bowls: 3-2 (Dooley was 8-10-2 in bowls)
If he stayed at it for as long as Dooley did (25 years) and maintained this pace, he would finish with a career record of 260 wins and 65 loses with 10 SEC titles and 15 SEC East Titles.

Obviously, this pace won't continue like that. But it's nice to think about.

Your right. He might not keep up this pace, but...he could get better. Really. Likely probably not. I say he ends as the all time winningest coach at Georgia and walks away with 2-3 MNC before its all said and done.

in other words, the gators suck

Sorry Kyle, but he is right and you are wrong.

LSU played neither the Number 1 AP Poll nor Number 1 Coaches' Poll opponent in 2004. The system is flawed, and we don't all want a playoff, but insist on Plus One (+1) which is catered to very nicely with this 5th BCS Bowl Game a week after the other 4 Major Bowl Games.

http://www.nationalchamps.net/NCAA/past_AP_Polls.htm

Oklahoma certainly was not the right team to play for the Mythical NC in 2005. Southern Cal and Oklahoma together did not win more games over Final AP Poll Top 25 teams than did Auburn by itself. In every poll, Auburn was Number 2 when the season was over. Therefore, there is yet another BCS screw up having Oklahoma, not Auburn, play for the MNC in 2005.

Now, this year, there is no doubt that Texas played Southern Cal and that it was a great game. Southern Cal had played 13 games against teams who had in fact on the average every week the Number 82 Total Defense. It was very clear to me that Southern Cal would not win their 3-Peat, as I said daily before they played this January.

Having every weenie school who goes undefeated playing cupcake schedules eligible for the BCS Bowl Game is good for them and horrible for college football otherwise.

As for your comments that it is not a mythical national championship because the NCAA sanctions the game, well sir, you are totally wrong on that too.

There are 22 sports my team and conference compete in in collegiate sports as a Division 1-A school. In every single sport other than Football and it for us in 1-A only, the NCAA holds in fact a "National Championship" Tournament to determine the NC.

In this one sport, and it only in 1-A, is it determined by flawed polls.

The NCAA does not recognize the mythical national championship because of this known fact to all but to you.

You talk about the basketball tournament and how the seeding gave Florida a fake one; however you talk out of both sides of your one face with all due respect Kyle King to state then that in January 2001 Nebraska who did not even win its conference championship should have played Oklahoma. Nebraska ended the season Number 8, by the way. How was that a NC game with the Number 8 team in fact playing in it ? Can’t answer that question, can you Kyle King ?

http://www.bcsfootball.org/files/bcs-2000.pdf

Then there is the little issue of the vols' tainted MNC game January 1999 when Tee Martin admitted that he was paid $8,000 in wire transfers to win the game.

Now, we have Reggie Bush's family paying nothing for 2 years to live in a house in California where two years of BCS results hang in the balance of whether it too is tainted.

Sure, they both years are tainted and the BCS lacks the credibility to declare their MNC game null and void for either of those years either.

This has been a flawed system of determining but a single play two of 119 Division 1-A teams against each other for the mythical national championship game ostensibly because playing a game a week after the other bowls would extend the season too long. Excuse me, Kyle King, they do that already now. Don’t they ?

Cleary, every argument I have that the BCS is totally screwed up, is answered by the one single game that would generate more cash from it than all the other 30 Bowl Games combined, that would pit a week after the 4 Major Bowl Games determine their own 2 Champions who then would play each other.

Maybe that game would be listed at this WebPages URL Link by the NCAA ?

http://www.ncaa.org/champadmin/champs_listing1.html

“The NCAA does not conduct a championship for Division I-A football. Instead, these teams participate in a national championship system developed by the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) organization.” That is what the NCAA says, not what you say they say Kyle King, which they do not say.

It would certainly be a move in the right direction for a totally flawed and failed system of pick only 2 teams, when clearly there are more than just only 2 teams as often as there are exactly only 2 any year.

You have hijacked this blog that is not in support of the BCS and have been handed your hat on your point.

The facts are that Coach Richt is doing quite well, that our Program is, that we are recruiting better than we ever have, and that Coach Richt is one of the Top 6 Coaches in College Football today, who is not a back-stabbing fat slob who has won in 5 years the same number of SEC Championships the other you discuss above accomplished in 14 years, has UGA ranked in the Final AP Poll for the last 9 consecutive years now, has UGA looking up over this 9-year period (10 this season) at only 2 teams with more than our 87-26, and has averaged according to Scout.com the Number 6 recruiting class over the last 5 years that with redshirts make up our team this season with 50 in the NFL today. 4 in a row Top 10 finishes and this season, 4 QBs all considered in the Top 10 in the nation the year they came out to be coached by Coach Richt which he has only for two entire decades taught them to be the best they can be.

It will be no different this season, with a SOS of Number 15 or better again this season, and 10-3 or 11-3 season.

You know Kyle King, sir. After having read your reply that anonymous was wrong in calling the one game of just pick two teams the MNC, I clicked the URL Links above by paulwesterdawg and found this URL Link you provided today at your WebPages URL Link where you go off on Coach Richt.

http://www.rollbamaroll.com/story/2006/6/28/91129/3689

And, I will reply to that BS here too then :

I hardly think that Florida and Auburn are UGA’s 2 main rivals, or that either is doing as well as Coach Richt Kyle King, sir.

Not one single year since Steve Spurrier abruptly quit that gig at Florida has Florida been ranked ahead of Coach Richt. Not once. This is the 5th season now this up-coming season since Steve Spurrier has no longer been at his alma mater. Florida is not in the Top 25 Football Programs over this span (Number 28). Last season, to the point, Florida lost to LSU whom Coach Richt blew away in the SEC Championship Game by 3 TDs, and Florida lost to Steve Spurrier whom Coach Richt beat as well, an unRanked South Carolina 5-Loss team.

As for Auburn, how can Tommy Tuberville be so great when 4 of his 7 years at Auburn, he has not been ranked at all in the Final AP Polls ? Over the last 2 seasons, Coach Richt is 2-2 against Auburn. In the 5 previous years that Tubs and Coach Richt competed against each other, only 1 of the 5 years was Auburn ranked ahead of UGA and it Number 2 to Number 7 in the Final Polls. Tubs has lost 8 games in 7 seasons against teams that in fact lost 5 or more games (One a 8-Loss Bama Team) and were none of the 8 teams ranked in the Final AP Poll while Coach Richt has only 2 such Losses, one Auburn, the other Florida – neither year of which were either Florida nor Auburn ranked at all while UGA has been for 9 Consecutive Years in the Final AP Poll accomplished by only 1 other program Florida State who has not been the same since Coach Richt quit that gig for this one. To the point, Auburn lost last season to unRanked Georgia Tech a 5-Loss Team whom Coach Richt beat by twice their score and Auburn lost to LSU whom Coach Richt beat by 3 TDs for his 2nd SEC Championship in his 1st five years compared to Alabama who has not won a SEC Championship not one single solitary year of this decade of the 2000s.

As for this 9 wins or 10 wins a year BS of yours Kyle King, I should like to ask where you pull that out of your hat too sir ? Coach Richt has 4 years in a row been Top 10 in the Final AP Poll after his inaugural season where he was left by the previous coach but 1 quarterback and he a freshman who won 8 games.

The four seasons since have been in fact 13, 11, 10 and 10 win seasons.

Do you see a 9-win season for Coach Richt at Athens ?

Or, even a 9-Win Average ?

No. So, you are a biased writer of BS with all due respect Kyle King.

As for UGA not facing Alabama again until 2007, UGA certainly did do well the one lonely time Alabama was in the Top 10 this decade of the 2000s in 2002 (other than this last season.) Truth be said about that one season is that Coach Richt knocked Bama from the Top 10 to finish Number 11 AP Poll 2002, a year Phillip Fulmer prevented Alabama from being ranked in the Coaches’ Poll at all for his Probation of Bama’s Program. In this decade of the 2000s, Bama has been ranked but once in the Top 10.

Can we live with the fact that Coach Richt has been in fact ranked ahead of Bama every year of what this season is his 6th year at UGA except for last year and it by Number 8 Bama over Number 10 UGA ? Probably, right ?

Your recruiting at Bama has not been nearly what Coach Richt has accomplished and no year has Bama out-recruited Coach Richt and Rodney Garner. Not once. Not one Recruiting Ranking.

The last time I looked Coach Richt played in fact the Number 15 SOS last season, and Bama once again a cupcake city Schedule Strength the NCAA you love to misquote so often ranked for Bama the Number 50 NCAA Schedule Strength 2005-2006 in Football.

http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/Internet/toughest%20schedule/ia_9games_past.pdf

I mean for a school, Bama, whom the NCAA says has exactly only 1 sport they have won a NC in and it women’s gymnastics which did not count in this last Directors’ Cup, a sport in which UGA won its 7th NC.

http://www.ncaa.org/champadmin/champs_listing1.html

This decade of the 2000s has not been kind to Bama, that much is absolutely certain Kyle King, sir.

Well this decade of the 2000s has been especially enjoyed by BuLLdawg fans the world over, of this I can assure you personally and that we can “live with” Coach Richt far better than you judge yourself on any of these issues.

Rankings of which only 1 year in the decade of the 2000s has Bama been ranked ahead of UGA and it by 2 spots, SEC Championships of zero in this decade of the 2000s for Bama to 2 for UGA, Recruiting not one year ranked ahead of Coach Richt by any Recruiting Ranking service, Schedule Strength Rankings of Number 50 for Bama and Number 15 for UGA.

A 48-53-8 All-Time Series Record with Auburn is not best described as one in which UGA has a losing record at Sanford Stadium, not when Auburn has a losing record at their home. And, moreover in college football it is a season that is judged not one game as to whether Tubs or Coach Richt is the better coach.

As for UGA’s Football Program, I hope that the URL Links do better posted here than in my response to your BCS is great and authorized by the NCAA in its non-mythical you call them MNC Games.

http://football.stassen.com/cgi-bin/records/calc-wp.pl?start=1997&end=2005&rpct=1&min=1&ss=on&se=on&c1a=on&pt=on&by=Wins

UGA’s Program starting 1997 (this year then the 10th season up-coming) UGA has been ranked every single year in the Final AP Poll (while Bama has been ranked ahead of UGA once all decade of the 2000s) with only 1 other program FSU who has not been anywhere near as good as UGA with Richt as FSU has been without him. Bama has gone more years unRanked at all this decade of the 2000s than I am certain that you can live with as a Bama fan, Kyle King; right ?

And, UGA’s Program finds less than one handful of schools with more in the NFL than we, and none in the SEC – including Alabama.

All of this success and being the highest average Recruiting Ranking Football Team in the SEC over the 5 years available at both Rivals and Scout.com that make up with Redshirts our football teams this up-coming season. Number 6 average Scout.com and Number 5 average Rivals Recruiting Rankings for the last entire 5 years in a row by Coach Richt and Rodney Garner. We recruit all over the nation, with 17 states represented on our roster this year.

And, how has this all worked out for UGA fans to be disappointed you suggest ? The only number that is relevant in college football is the rankings in the polls for Division 1-A.

And, clearly, were we to look then at how this has happened that UGA is the best football program over the last 9 years (10th year this up-coming season) in the best conference in college football with 5 of the Final AP Poll Top 14 Reigning Teams (to 1 ACC Final AP Poll Top 16 by direct comparison), what we find is that only Texas and Florida State have a better Record than UGA’s 87-26. By the way, Bama is Number 41 in the nation over the last entire 10 years this up-coming season by direct comparison with UGA’s Football Program you ponder your navel over at 61-48.

http://football.stassen.com/cgi-bin/records/calc-wp.pl?start=1997&end=2005&rpct=1&min=1&ss=on&se=on&c1a=on&pt=on&by=Wins

I did not know that there were people out there putting down Coach Richt, as fine a man and coach as you can find today, like you Kyle King, sir : So, for your URL Link above to it, I thank you and provide this then reply to where you left such a URL Link to total BS.

No wonder you did not summarize that the URL Link you provide above on what you have to say on Coach Richt is found otherwise on the Internet, that you in fact put hell on Coach Richt Kyle King and on every point of the hell you dish out to Coach Richt, your program Bama has been significantly worse.

Is Florida really doing better than Coach Richt in the same timeframe of The Coach Richt Era at UGA ?

As for Auburn, how can Tommy Tuberville be so great when 4 of his 7 years at Auburn, he has not been ranked at all in the Final AP Polls ? Over the last 4 seasons, Coach Richt is 2-2 against Auburn. Is Auburn really doing better as you state than Coach Richt has done at UGA when 4 of the 7 years Auburn’s Tubs was not ranked whatsoever and he only once ranked ahead of UGA that year Number 2 to Number 7 ?

Hardly.

We are in the SEC East. Our Rivals in the East include Tennessee, Florida and South Carolina. When South Carolina beat the other two, and we beat South Carolina, that alone separates who the Beast in the East is. What we did to LSU speaks for itself. How is it that the top team in the SEC West as the Beast of the West is left out too by you of the main Rivals of UGA ? Isn’t LSU the best team in the West ? And, haven’t they been ? Your premises are flawed and your understanding of the premise even far more flawed.

Alabama, in the same timeframe (How could you leave this out and not be considered Biased?) has a 1-4 record against Auburn, a 1-4 record against LSU, a 2-3 record against the vols, a 1-2 record against South Carolina, a 3-2 against Arkansas, a 3-2 with Ole Miss, and a wait for it now Kyle King an 0-2 head-to-head with Coach Richt.

http://football.stassen.com/cgi-bin/records/all-opp.pl?start=2001&end=2005&team=Alabama&sort=l

I think we can live, with all due respect clearly biased Bama fan Kyle King, with what Coach Richt has done against selected teams when Bama itself has done worse. What do you think Kyle King, sir ?

Anonymous 1:31 AM, 2:57 AM, and 3:13 AM (it appears as though you are the same person), that was quite impressive. Perhaps a lack of sleep has impaired your ability to read and reason.
First of all Kyle King is not a "biased Bama fan" he is a Georgia Bulldog through and through. In fact, he is such a stout DAWG, that fans of other schools (such as BAMA) seek his opinion of Georgia Sports.
Secondly, Kyle King's love for Coach Richt is comparable to Paul's hatred for Tech and the Gamecocks, and Dawgnoxious’s hatred for Mike Adams.
Finally, we all have an opinion on the way the national champion is decided in college football. Kyle has his, and you have yours. I would argue that no system is perfect, not the BCS, nor the bowl/poll system before it, or even the plus-one or playoff. However, the BCS is the system in place now, and if/when Georgia wins the BCS title game I would not consider that championship “mythical”. I doubt you could find any fan whose team won the BCS title game that wouldn’t believe their team was the best that year.
It’s always interesting the read the opinions here on Paul’s site, but Anonymous fans like yourself that go on long-winded self-righteous rants give Tech fan’s like Nathan and Dan a reason to point and laugh. Stop the insanity…

GO DAWGS!!

Anonymous 1:31 The only reason USC was ranked #1 in 2003-2004 and not LSU was USC lost to Cal on 9/27/03. LSU lost to Florida 10/11/03. This 2 week difference in the losses is the only reason the polls ended the way they did. The polls are flawed in that losing early is better than losing later. LSU and Oklahoma's SOS was their saving grace against USC's #1 ranking. That's what USC gets for playing in the Pac 10.

Kyle - I'm pretty sure that the guy who posted all 3 of these long rambling posts is "BuLLDawg" from the AJC blog.

It's really not worth responding to his stuff. It's too hard to find a point. He thinks Kathryn Richt isn't Dawg enough either.

lol.

Kyle, I'm reminded by the Anonymous poster of one of my favorite sayings: You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.

I'm also reminded by the Anonymous poster of the Principal's comment in Billy Madison: [Mr. Anon], what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Dawgnoxious, I was thinking of that exact quote from Billy Madison. My eyes glazed over halfway through the second post, and I refused to read the rest. I'm wondering if it's just poor writing, or if the posts are influenced by alcohol and/or narcotics. I enjoy both GSB and KK's blog, and I'd hate to see the comments section here turn into another AJC Vent. Keep up the great work fellas. Only a few more weeks until the season is upon us. Go Dawgs!

How ironic that Anonymous snidely states that Kyle's opinions are based on incorrect premises, when in fact Anonymous's entire oeuvre of boring-ass rants is based on the head-slappingly stupid premise that Kyle is a Bama fan, which can be disproven in less than 30 seconds by anyone whose reading comprehension resides on at least a third-grade level.

Paul, I agree with you that the long-windedness and general irrelevance of this Anonymous knob sounds suspiciously like "BuLLDawg," who regularly gums up the AJC discussion boards with his stupefyingly lengthy, uniformly off-topic, and utterly pointless rants. Anonymous/BuLLDawg, if you're reading this, step away from the computer and get a life. And feel free to switch your allegiance to another football team, since 1) there's no way you could have mustered the brainpower required to get into UGA, even in the days when they were tossing diplomas into open car windows, and 2) you're making the rest of us look bad. In fact, I'm not entirely sure you're not a ringer commissioned by some Georgia Tech fan to make UGA people look as loony as possible.
