Someone Has to Finish Last. Might as well be Tech

The arena is empty
Except for one man,
Still driving and striving
As fast as he can.
The sun has gone down
And the moon has come up,
And long ago somebody left with the cup,
But he's driving and striving
And hugging the turns,
And thinking of someone
For whom he still burns.

Dave Akins tips us off to AccessAtlanta's "Best Of Atlanta" listings. In the category of Best Local Sports Team, obviously the Georgia Bulldogs won it. The Yellow Jackets? As Dave pointed out, GT finished behind a minor league hockey team. Indeed, long ago somebody left with the cup.

But here's the thing. GT didn't come in 6th as Dave pointed out. The following groups finished ahead of Tech.
  • Auburn Football
  • UGA Gymnastics
  • Atlanta Beat Women's Soccer (sure the league is defunct, but they still out draw GT)
  • Kentucky Basketball (they play to bigger crowds here than GT)
  • Atlanta Hawks Ok, even I don't believe that.
But don't fret Tech fans. In 4-5 more years, the Gwinnett Gladiators will be out of business, people will have forgotten the Atlanta Beat, and you'll have your chance at being 6th. And to the Anon commenter who kept saying that Atlanta cares about GT, I would argue....not so much.

BTW -- don't miss Dave's site for the excellent nerdville photo.

Ouch. I was not even aware such a thing as the Gwinnett Gladiators existed.

That's ok Jimmy, most folks weren't aware Georgia Tech has a football team.

Auburn is: GT STILL has more SEC titles than they do.

Georgia Tech as a university is not (and hasn't since the split of the liberal arts arm) really part of, or particularly close to, the surrounding community.

Georgia Tech might as well be Mars as far as most Georgian's affiliation with the school. Placing an elite technical university full of foreigners and engineering dorks in the heart of Atlanta isn't exactly a combination that's going to click.

Doesn't make being a Tech fan in Atlanta easy, it sucks to have your hometown basically enemy territory. I have long maintained that I had a far better picture of the rivalry with Georgia once I moved out of the state ... where GT is known as well as Georgia (GT for academics and basketball, UGa for football). I see just as many GT hats/t's (not many) as UGa hats/t's (not many) here in New York, which is a welcome change.

Inside the state though, it's a wipeout. It'd be nice if we could have a liberal arts arm and start attracting more instate and "normal" Georgians. There's no community tie there.

Nathan, don't try to mask your reasoning behind wanting liberal arts at Tech. We all know the real motivation is to attract females and to dump football players.

"normal georgians" = "hot sorority chicks"

I'm not too proud to admit that I took a trip or two to Athens to sample the wares.
