About the Student Blackout

Update: This was written in 2006. Not 2007. My opinion on the 2007 blackout is different because the senior asked us to do it. It wasn't a student body thing.

Have at it. Someone emailed me and said that 1,300 students are participating in a "blackout" for the game. They are wearing all black for whatever reason.

If that's your thing have at it. Personally, I saw the stadium for UK 2003 or whatever when we did a blackout for Dooley. It looked like I was in Columbia. Not Athens. And it seems like a very Gamecock thing to do. Since when did they ever have a good idea?

A Red Out would've made a helluva a lot more sense.

But whatever floats your boat. I'm in Red Pants and a white or black shirt b/c that's what's lucky for me. If you go in all black, that's cool. But this blog isn't backing anything so Gamecockish beyond simply making you aware that this option is out there.

Paul,

As of this writing the facebook group has 2,375 members...up from roughly 400 this morning. I don't know how it got started but I like the idea. And I don't think they are hoping for all black, just black shirts. The goal is to blackout the student section from the rest of the (presumably red) crowd. Hopefully it will look cool and I think anything to unify the students for a big game will be a benefit. Go Dawgs!

maybe it will help the receivers see the damn ball...

I gotta be honest, I was asked by a friend of mine (who now happens to be the SGA Vice President) to join the blackout and I had to decline.

I sit (stand more like it) next to the band in the student section and I will not participate in any sort of blackout or anything of that nature. PWD nails it on the head with how his gameday attire is his own spot of luck.

I wear my new Nike Dri-Fit Polo and some Khakis. I won't shave before the game and I'll be wearing the Dawg tags I bought when I was in high school. It's superstitious and I'm well aware of it, but I'll do ANYTHING short of kissing another man to get a win.

That's just how I roll.

Your comments pretty much wrap up what so many consider the stereotypical GA fan. Too cool to care about doing ANYTHING for a game, but not too cool to complain about what the team did wrong after the game. This is when I realize how right so many rival fans are when referring to GA fans as arrogant and above it all. Maybe, just maybe, it is a good thing that so many students are gearing up to actually bring the NOISE on Saturday night. Then again, I guess you consider that red pants are LOUD enough on their own.

Kid, I crap louder than you cheer.

You're barking up the wrong tree on this one. I'm louder and more obnoxious than most anyone I know.

Besides -- 10,000 people will see this article between now and gameday. They can make up their own mind about the blackout. You got more publicity with a mention here than you would've gotten anywhere else.

Go Dawgs.

I'm the superstitious sort when it comes to gameday. I've worn the same polo to games for three years (its ratty as hell now, but we're undefeated when I wear it). Last year, I wore a sweatshirt because of the cooler weather for the Auburn game, and we all know how that turned out.

Why buck superstition for the sake of looking like a bunch of lamecock fans? I won't be able to go the game because my wife is nine months pregnant, but if i were able to make it, I'd wear the same thing that I've been wearing for all those other games we've won.

Astronaut Mike Dexter said...

So, wait, before, we Georgia fans were obnoxious boors who bark too loud and are complete assholes to opposing fans. Now we're apathetic snobs who can't be bothered to do anything for a game. Well, which one is it? By all means, tell us exactly how you'd like us to cheer for the Tennessee game, and we'll get right on that.

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't mind it except for the fact the Carolina Shamecocks did it first. I hate to follow in their footsteps. Plus I'm a gameday lucky shirt guy myself, and if I cost the Dawgs an SEC game just by wearing the wrong shirt I'd never forgive myself.

Hunker Down said...

I have a bright red polo that I wore all last year and 5 times this year. But, after the last two outings, I wonder if it is losing its power. Normally, I don't change my gameday attire unless we lose or there is a real risk of hypothermia. The Ole Miss game felt like a loss. Is there such a thing as a moral defeat? I am sticking with the truism that an ugly win is better than a pretty loss (Gamecocks) and will stay in red. Got to.

I think UGA has about 16,000 student tickets and the only hope of a blackout is if you hand all of these people a free black t-shirt on the way in...and then only maybe. It worked in Columbia because the team and the coach wore all black back then. I like the idea of the red-out.

Anonymous said...

Honestly this doesn't suprises. The students at UGA these days are pansies. I was appalled to go sit in my old stomping grounds directly behind the band and see the pathetic caliber of debauchery that was going on.

This "blackout" idea is an awful idea (I don't know if we can ever call it that since it's been done other places).

We [Thank God in heaven] are not the dump in central South Carolina. We are Athens, the crown jewel of the SEC. Show some balls students.

I'm pretty sure that was the receiving corps losing its power, not your shirt. I'm not in the least superstitious but at the same time I think it's kind of lame to wear black. Black is a color that works its way into far too many uniforms. Red is much more distinctive of Georgia. I'd even submit that silver would be a better option than black. I'll stick with my red and white UGA polo thank you very much. I don't ever wear my black UGA polo to games.

Do you know what looks dumber than blacking out the stadium?

A half ass attempt at it. Having enough in black for the announcers to say, "It looks like they all tried to dress in black" but not enough for it to look a bit impressive.

The ones who will be boycotting this will ruin the attempt for everyone else. I for one think uniting the crowd like this is a pretty good idea. Whether it be black or red or white it doesn't matter. But once the idea starts it's a shame that some fans refuse to participate. And just so you guys know, if we could get the stadium to do this it wouldn't look anything like Columbia, its 90,000+, it would look pretty impressive. I think between all of our message boards we could start something here, maybe the red, whatever but we could really get some power behind the idea. I personally think black is good for a few reasons, #1 commemorate Erk, #2 it's a nationally televised night game. If someone organized something like this I will go along and I'm kinda disappointed in the lack of assistance and contribution from some of you only to hold on to superstition. Superstition? WTF, are we 12?

If anyone ever tried to get this going, a black out, red out, whatever, and we could pick one home game a year to do this, I would be all over it! It would be nice to be a part of starting a new tradition, or superstition if you go that way but whatever. Who knows, over the span of a couple of years it may actually catch on?!?

These youngsters are simply trying to find their identity and what works for them. If wearing black is what they need to do then so be it as long as they stay on their feet and give Ainge fit in that endzone.
I for one had to endure the early to mid 90's and found it appropriate to leave "Church" without a voice and a huge bourbon buzz on. I'm sticking to my gameplan.

Holla said...

Yeah, I bought a black shirt last year and wore it for the first time...to the Auburn game. Screw that!

In case you're wondering, no, I didn't burn the shirt and wipe its existence from my memory. Instead, I let it hang in the closet, wallowing forever in its own shame about its wasted potential. Cruel, but necessary.

Of course, I also made myself listen to "Country Roads" every day from January 3 until September 2...I am a medievalist, after all (self-punishment cleanses the soul).

Black-outs are a South Carolina thing to do. If UGA were to be sporting black jerseys and we were to know about it in advance then maybe a black-out would be in order against a major opponent. A black-out would make Sanford Stadium Halloweenish, the UGA fans in black and the Tennessee fans in orange. I'm just sticking to shirt and tie, thank you very much.

Anonymous said...

I'm with you Xon. I bought a new red longsleeve shirt to wear to the 2003 SEC title game. Its safe to say that shirt doesn't make an appearance during football season.

Anonymous said...

I am against anything that keeps hot co-eds from wearing traditional sundresses and such. Guys, wear whatever you want. Girls, keep making Georgia proud (and Tennessee jeolous).

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't mind a black out. I think we can do it better than the cocks.

Auburn had the tiger walk since 1989. We adopted it and made it much better.

In my opinion, the whole Georgia color scheem has too much red. There are so many teems out there with red and white and we are falling into the mix.

Our colors are red and black, I think its time for some diversity. more black and silver would be nice.

Anonymous said...

my understanding, being a student and all, is that the blackout is only for UGA students. It would look retarted if EVERYONE wore black. alumni, wear red, but don't sit in the student section. I think that if the stadium of red and white had a distinct black student section, it would look super bad ass. Of course, the frat boys will ruin it with their tie and white shirts, but oh well.

Anonymous said...

With a little digging, I think we'll find that Michael Adams is behind the blackout idea.

Seriously though, if these kids are organizing over facebook(an social networking site), this seems like something the Nerds would do.

Way to go students, you're drawing comparisons to the Techies and the Gamecocks.

Jesus, don't you all have school work to finish, tail to chase, or drinking to do? Apparently Georgia has changed since I graduated.

Anonymous said...

Having seen the entire stadium in Black for the Dooley tribute game, I can tell you that it's not that cool looking.

Anonymous said...

They could always drop by Man Style at the mall and pick up some black dress shirts to go with their red ties.

Huh? It was halfass, thats why it was stupid. If you didnt know anything about it you couldnt tell it even existed.

You know what's stupid, not ever wearing a shirt because the team lost when you did wear it, now thats retarded.

If everyone hates the blackout idea, why not a red out?

Sanford in all black for the Dooley game? Not even close- 20 percent of the crowd maybe. If the students pull this off, I'll be surprised, and as far as our hot coeds go, I'm sure they ALL have a black sundress to wear. So...Students black, everyone else red- let's run with it and JUST WIN BABY!

I just find it highly amusing that the most lemming-like denizens of this campus, the Greek pledges, are balking at "fitting in".

I like this. Maybe we can get this set up as the RED&BLACK-OUT and do it every year for the big home game!!??!! I'm sure it would start small but eventually catch on!

PMac said...

Alright I'm not liking this idea at all. So much in fact that I sent an editorial to the Red and Black this morning in response to the student who is organizing the whole thing. Anyone remember how well the Gamecocks blackouts have been? Florida beats them 54-17 in 2001 and then the Dawgs in 2004 20-16. We don't need a blackout.

pcm said...

To start, thanks PWD for posting this because anything to increase the publicity helps. I also respect the way you said it wasn't your kinda thing, but feel free to do whatever.

Because honestly, some of you people just drive me to drinking and profanity.

Jason, you are a badass. You're right, the students of today suck. Back in your day it was so much better. Blah Blah Blah.

I can promise each and everyone out there that the players and coaches do not give a damn if you wear your lucky Nike Dri-Fit Polo with your $100 slacks from George Gibson's. They don't lose because of it. I guess since Georgia has lost at least one game since 1980 ALL OF US WHO'VE WITNESSED A LOSS SHOULD QUIT WATCHING SO THE TEAM NEVER LOSES AGAIN. Anything less and you're not a true Dawg.

Nothing's more pathetic than a bunch of alums bitching about the students trying to do something new and different. I'm sorry Joe, facebook is something everyone does now. We also drink and succeed academically. We are Michael Adams worse nightmare.

If we really want something like this in the future we should do what Virginia Tech does, and designate one game on the schedule as "black" and another as "red" so the crowd can be prepared. Wait, I guess we couldn't do that. We wouldn't want to copy them.

If you come to the game, I promise football will still happen, despite us bastard students best efforts to show unity amongst ourselves. We are merely trying to black out the student section from the rest of the crowd. The facebook group currently has roughly 3700 members since being started yesterday I believe. It is a true grass roots effort at work. If you don't agree, fine, jut quit bitching and save your negative energy for yelling at Tennessee and remember we all want the same thing -- A DAWGS WIN! GO DAWGS! GATA!

PMac said...

And yet you still want to unify our students with those idiots over at South Carolina? Come on buddy, that was a weak attempt at sarcasm. We just need to keep doing what were doing because it's been working ever since I've been a student.

I remember when South Carolina "blacked out" Williams-Brice in 2001 against Florida. A Florida receiver, whose name escapes me, had a great quote after the Gators blisted the Gamecocks 54-17.
When asked about the stadium being all black, he said, "Yeah, we appreciated that. It helped us see Rex's passes better."

Anonymous said...

I'll be wearing red.

In the student section.

The horror!

I will have to agree with Parker.

Yeah, like everyone dressed in one color helps/hurts one team and not the other, they are both playing in the same stadium man!

I'm sick of hearing about the superstitions and stubbornness of some fans.

News flash: Nothing you do individually helps the team win or lose. Not your clothes, your money, your clapping, your beam drinking, nothing.

If you don’t clap, it won't matter, it will still get loud, if you don’t donate money, it doesn’t matter, there are plenty of donations to make up for it. But, to do something collectively as a group, to join together to do something new and different, this is infact the only time you will be noticed if you don’t want to participate.

This is what makes Ga fans unlike most other fans, the group as a whole doesn’t participate. This is why all stadiums bigger and smaller are louder, more energetic, and more unified in their cheers and chants. I don’t care if this idea is stupid, awesome, or whatever. It’s the unwillingness of the group that has hurt Ga all this time and looks as though it's continuing.

So, put down your retarded idea of a lucky shirt for one blasted game a year and lets not copy any other school but instead make it bigger and better than they have ever seen. If we stopped doing things that other schools do we would have NOTHING left. Nothing. Not a Dawg Walk, not a fight song, not the 4th quarter salute, not the tailgating, nothing. If we do this half way its going to be stupid, and maybe that wont change by this Sat but maybe next time it comes up, more and more people will try and be a part of the assembly. Just maybe some of the old timers and new timers with the old timers attitude will one day look at a new idea and embrace it. Honestly this idea is the easiest to do with the most effect. Just imagine the entire stadium in one color. Its easy to do because all we have to do is get the word out and then act. You don’t have to buy anything, make any sacrifice, nothing; and if it worked you would remember it forever, you will be telling your children back in 2006 when this tradition started and that you were a part of it. If the idea fizzles so be it, but stop bashing it and ignoring it at worst.

Anonymous said...

"If you don’t clap, it won't matter, it will still get loud"

By that logic, if I don't wear black it won't matter because plenty of other people will. So I'll take you advice here and wear what I please.

I agree that all the superstitious fans in the world won't change the outcome of the game but clapping and cheering most certainly will. It creates a hostile environment for the other team. This is the only thing a fan can do directly that can change the outcome of the game. If you want to concentrate on doing something as a collective then do that.

Anonymous said...

You're over reacting big time. It won't look stupid no matter how much red or black is worn because those are our colors.

Now...if we had a Yellow Out that was half way implemened, it would look pretty dumb.

Over the past 10 years the stadium has gotten more and more red for late season games. The best being the UT 2000 game which was a total red out and it looked AWESOME.

Anonymous said...

Being supersititous is silly.

BUT

It doesn't cost anything to knock on wood.

Anonymous said...

Well hell, if it helps the receivers see the ball better then we should try to do this EVERY game.

82 said...

I thought you said this was a bad idea? Also, I was on the field during that game and didnt even notice a 'red out'.

And Dante, of course if everyone stopped clapping it wouldnt be loud, I'm not an idoit. I was referring to your personal contribution, if you dont clap it wont matter, there are 92,000 others who will be, if you dont feel like it on a particular play it wont matter.

My point was to single out certain Dawg fans who think that they personally have anything to do with the wins and losses. Hate to bring it to you guys but you don't. Your shirts don't matter, your pants don't matter, none of it. The fan base as a whole matters and for portions of it to rag on other portions for coming up with new and exciting things to fire up the crowd well that's just proves the disorder of our Dawg Nation.

Come up with a good idea of your own and I'm hoping we will collectively back you up, until then shut it.

While I don't think you're an idiot by any stretch, I think you're trying to have it both ways here. The only difference between collectively cheering vs. collectively wearing black is that one has the chance to influnce the outcome of the game while the other does not. In all other respects, they are equal but you're trying to treat them differently. If it doesn't matter if an individual cheers to help out the collective, then why on earth does it matter if an individual wears black to help out the collective? Shouldn't there also be people there to pick up the slack if I don't wear black? You can't argue that on the one hand what I as an individual do makes no difference to the collective and then on the other hand argue that I need to do something to help out the collective.

Anonymous said...

Honestly, It doesn't matter what we wear as long as we run the ball and our D plays lights out. I'd wear pink panties and a pink bra if I thought it would help us win, but what the fans wear have no bearing on how the team plays. HoW LOUD the fans are does! But diminishing what the students are trying to do is not helping anyone out at all. I will wear black if they want me to, because after all, and I've been to plenty of Georgia games, and they are the ones that set the tone for the defense...they stand up the whole time and scream their fool heads off, and sometimes they leave, but not against a 7:45 UT game. This game is our season, and God knows we need some kind of spark. I don't think the color of shirt I wear will help the dawgs, but if it will bring more electricity into Sanford on Saturday night, then to quote Johnny Cash....I'm the man in Black.

For goodness sake our student section copies South Carolina and we, just as the cocks, manage to pull defeat from the jaws of victory.

How the hell is wearing all black "gamecockish"? Black is one of our school colors for christ sake! Now I can understand if it was some student thing trying to get everybody to wear black, but we were ASKED by the TEAM and the COACH to wear BLACK! Now to all you nonconformist out there think by if you wear a different shirt the whole day will be shot to shit, swallow your pride one time! Take one for the team! This is one time out of the entire season that the team has asked us for ANYTHING! They go on that field every week and bleed black and red for us. So for just once, do something for the TEAM if not for your fellow students.

I understand superstitions, but why go as far as bashing those who want to come together as a Bulldog Nation?

Chill out. Nobody's holding a gun to your head. If you want to wear your "raggedy superstitious clothes"- so be it. Just don't jump down throats because others want to be united.

P.S. If anyone has noticed, every school attempts to have "blackouts" or "blueouts" or "orangeouts".. it's not just a "Gamecock thing to do".
