Dawgs still need 2007 opening opponent

Dawgpost.com has the story. Apparently, Oregon State backed out on us and the deal fell apart. Damon says we'll consider anything including playing a BCS school on the road to open the season or a second Div I-AA team at home. We're just totally desperate.

Although luckily Auburn is in the same boat.

Let's play Auburn twice

Notre Dame and Michigan declined to talk to us. What a bunch of wussies. Guess they want to continue playing Navy, Air Force, etc.

Right this minute, i.e., post Vandy, I would think we might be able to get somebody like ND to pay us for an easy W.

This is ridiculous. We go from the Oregon St. coach saying that hosting UGA would be their biggest ever non-conference home game ever to not playing them at all?

To see us be rebuffed by Michigan once again doesn't surpise me. The Wolverines have only played ONE regular season game in the south and that was against South Carolina in 1985. All other SEC and ACC teams they've faced during the regular season have been played in Ann Arbor.

But I don't get Notre Dame. They've come south several times. But the word is Weiss wants easier schedules.

Cal in Berkeley please.

Oh, wait, they're really good.

Stanford in Palo Alto please.

Oregon State turns down a big road payday and an easy win?

What were they thinking?

Other than FSU, when has Notre Dame has rarely come down south to play 1 for 1 schedules against Top 10-15 programs?

And despite what happened on Saturday, we're still a Top 10 program over the past 6 years.

They came down south to play GT in a 2 for 1 deal, and the deal was scheduled when GT was going 7-5 or worse on a regular basis.

I jotted down a few that I found by looking up College Football Data Warehouse's link for Notre Dame opponents:

ND went to LSU in 71,84,86,97, Alabama in 1988, Clemson in 77, South Carolina in 76 and 83, and Ole Miss in 77 (huge upset for the Rebels in Jackson). And I think they've been to Tenn. 2 or 3 times in the last 20 years. As far as I know, these were all 1 for 1 deals.

Michigan has hosted SEC opponents numerous times without any return game. Ohio St. has done the same but to a lesser extent. I'm almost positive that they did go to LSU in the mid or late 80's. And of course they just made a recent trip to Raliegh for a matchup with the ACC.

I think it's safe to say that Notre Dame has played in SEC and ACC stadiums more times than the entire Big 10 has in its history.

When it comes to smack about UGA not playing outside the south since 1965, I will not accept it from a Big 10 fan because they just won't come down here. I won't take it from a USC fan either since UGA has visited LA to play them 3 times and have never been to Athens.

yeah -- fair point

That's dumb of me to say ND won't come to the South when they play UT all the time.

That's just not accurate.

So I'll retract that.

I will say they don't want to come down here in September to play a Top 10 team. They play UT in October or November when they meet up.

Otherwise, I was off base. I do know that we reached out and they said no.

Call up Morgantown and schedule West Virginia. Now. I want payback.

Michigan already has Oregon and ND lined up for 2007, thankyouverymuch. Also: when was the last time Georgia played anywhere outside of the south? Glass houses.

Brian-

I don't think your "glass houses" comment is very fair considering the fact that UGA is trying to play some games outside the south but Nancy-pants like Michigan, Notre Dame, and Oregon State are scared to play between the hedges.

Let's not forget the upcoming games scheduled against Colorado, Arizona St, Oregon, Cincinatti, etc.

You'd think Georgia could get a mid level BCS program in a heartbeat - just pick up the phone to (Kansas, Virginia, Stanford, Minnesota) and say you want a home and home and I can't see where it'd go wrong. I'm sure there's financial details to work out, etc ... but I can't imagine Georgia this close to a season unable to find an opponent. Something is really whack with this system.

How about Pitt? I think it would be an interesting match-up, as Mark May has never forgiven UGA for being teh national title game in 1980.

Why would any team be afraid to play in Athens after that showin we saw on Saturday?

perhaps we should play the saskatchewan college of stone masons since our receivers have hands of stone.

Since Auburn still needs a game, just for the sake of argument, why not move the Auburn game to to opening game? They usually have all their issue solved by the time they play us - maybe this would change things up a bit. Naturally they would have to agree, but it would make a great ESPN kickoff the season type game. Of course, both teams would still have to find a game for the week that we would have played in November, but maybe that opens up other options with teams out there that still need a game.

Just a suggestion....

"Just a suggestion.... "

that you read on another blog, you unoriginal....

I apologize for not having read every blog in cyberspace before posting my Auburn suggestion above, but I it was original. Apparently its inconceivable that multiple people could have the same idea.....

"It's obvious the answer to this question is that Georgia must face UCLA next year."

Or Texas A&M. I'd also suggest Colorado but the Athletic Department beat us to it. And who can forget Michigan State with that list of requirements?
