Coaching Searches of Interest: News and Rumors
Rodriguez to Bama Gaining Momentum
Bama is courting Rich Rodriguez pretty hard. He is the first coach to publicly admit that he's met with Bama. Stories of Note:

-- Bama to Make Decision within 72 Hours
-- Rodriguez Meets with Bama Brass - Charleston (WV) Gazette
-- Tide and Rodriguez Closer to Agreement - B'ham News
-- Saying Goodbye to Difficult for Rodriguez - B'Ham News

PWD Note: Nick Saban was never a logical candidate for Bama. The guy makes $4 million per year in the NFL. At the absolute best, Bama could pay $3 million/year. Why would Saban leave the Dolphins for a $1 million pay cut? And, why would Bama pursue a guy whose long term goal is to be an NFL coach. Rodriguez makes a tremendous amount of sense, and he doesn't have a "wondering career eye" like Petrino. Pairing Rodriguez up with Joe Kines could be a great match for Bama.

Heard some random Arizona State fan on Rivals Radio this morning (which if I may plug, is a godsend for those of us in parts of the country where college football is an afterthought) who was claiming that many people he spoke with in the Phoenix/Tempe area thought Dennis Ericson was the lead candidate for the ASU job. If he got the job, that would certainly make our games with ASU in the next few years a bit more exciting, and would probably generate quite a bit of national interest.
As for RR, unless Bama is backing up a Brinks truck (which it sounds like they are) I'd think long and hard before heading to the snake pit that is Tuscaloosa. Same for Mike Leach at UM. I think Gary Patterson or Randy Shannon might be better fits for the latter job.
Great line from Paul in the BurntOrange Nation piece about BvG. Give it a look -- you'll laugh.
So if Rodriguez gets the Bama job, are we not going to bother preparing for our game with them like we didn't bother with West Virginia? Throwing a regular season game away on a regular basis is going to hurt a lot more than throwing away the occasional Sugar Bowl.
I also heard Ericson for ASU. Good luck with that.
I don't think VanGorder is going to swallow the pride neccessary to take another coordinator position just yet. And I don't see how a zone blitz scheme like Tenuta would implement can work with Texas D. They have a fine D but they're not exactly known for speed. At the very least, it would take a couple of years to get the kind of player Tenuata would need to make his defense work. They'd be better off finding a coordinator who plays more to the strengths of Texas' typical talent pool. That would make Kines a decent choice but I just can't see a 62 year old coordinator working out with Brown's recruitment process.
Why would Nick Saban be interested in the 'Bama job? I don't know if he is, but folks down here in south Florida are running out of patience with his poor personnel moves (He could've had Drew Brees...but ended up with Duante Culpecker) and he's a dick towards anyone and everyone who tries to get anythihng out of him...from the media to the local Chapter of The United Way.
I think he'll be next year's hot coaching commodity because I don't see Saban winning at MIA.
Dante - Texas has one of the fastest defenses in the country. Their linebackers, safeties and Defensive lineman are all over pro rosters.
That defense is to slow as Jennifer Anniston is to homely.
If you were kidding, I missed it.
well guys...I don't know who in their right mind would want the Bama job.
No matter what you do you will always be judged in comparison to THE coach...Bryant.
If you don't get Auburn under control...you're gone anyway.
Fans study and scrutinize everything(I saw a chart where each player in each class was rated All American, all SEC or a warm body).
The 85 scholarship limit has done what it was intended for...parity.The have nots are more competitive at the expense of the haves.Translated...it ain't gonna get any easier.
There's not enough tea in China for that job.
old dawg
Borges to Stanford? Tenuta to Georgia Tech? Cutcliffe to pretty much anywhere? It's like . . . Christmas in December. Well, earlier in December, I guess.
No, Texas has one of the fastest defensive lines in the country. Nobody on that team is slow, but watch the safety and linebacker play some time against one of their 3 to 4 good opponents. They're not slow by any stretch but they're not greased lightning either. To be fair, they're faster than GT's defense so I guess a zone blitz heavy D would work but it would be far from ideal. And Texas defenders do slot in well to the NFL primarily because they've been playing in an NFL defense for four years in college.
