Recruiting Rankings and More Juco News

The Dawgs may get their fifth Junior College commitment this weekend. Chad Simmons of Rivals.com first broke the story that Scott Haverkamp is expected to commit to UGA during his visit Dec. 8th. Dean Legge of Scout.com also talked with Haverkamp, and he got the same info.

Scout.com's article makes it sound as if Haverkamp won't arrive in time for bowl practices. He would arrive around Jan. 2nd. Six or seven bowl practices aren't that big a deal to me. Enrolling in time for Mat Drills and Spring Ball is the main issue. Haverkamp is an interior OL prospect.

Other good offensive line news (belated on my part)...UGASports.com is also reporting that Justin "Bean" Anderson has qualified. He is currently enrolled at Hargrave, and he plans to enroll at UGA in January.

2008 Signing Day:
Looking way out into the future, the Dawgs got their 4th commitment for 2008 today. The Fayetteville Observer reports that North Carolina's D'Wayne Allen (6'4" and 230 Lbs) announced for Georgia. He is targeted for tight end duty. (ht - dawgpost.com) The kid's High School coach is Dan Inman's dad.

Recruiting Team Rankings:
I honestly don't care much about team recruiting rankings. I'm more interested in questions like "Are we addressing our needs?" And "Who else offered these guys?" But if you're into rankings, you'll be happy to know that UGA is currently ranked third by Scout.com. Georgia Tech is having their best recruiting since the Tri-Lam Social of 1983. The Yellow Jackets weigh in at #4.

Rivals.com also has their rankings out. They have the Dawgs at #2, and they list the Jackets at #14. Why such a difference for the Nerds? Who knows.

Peace,

Honestly, given what you know about Inman's play this year. How much worse could Vance really be?

If he doesn't kill 2 drives per game with personal fouls, holding calls and false starts, that's a quantum leap forward at the position.

To quote Dean Legge from yesterday's discussion on DawgPost's Porch..."Richt isn't getting these [Jucos] to watch the game from the sideline!"

These guys are coming in to play.

The angle that some have overlooked in this discussion is the issue of class separation. The problem with signing 8-9 high school linemen is that they'll all be seniors/redshirt seniors in the same 2 year period. This allows us to bring in some guys (Blaes and Havercamp specifically, because they only have 2 years to play) who will contribute immediately. Ask yourself: Can they help any less than Seth Watts?

Vance is a slightly different story because he has 3 years remaining, so it's more like what we did with Leonard Pope, playing a guy as a true freshman because you know you'll only get three years out of him before he goes pro.

Vance is still raw, but the guy's an undeniable talent. Let's just hope that his development follows the Dennis Roland model and not the Randall Swoopes model.

I guess those personal fouls are making Inman's name memorable. Tell me if this isn't the biggest joke you've ever seen? 1st team all-SEC?! I think the AP writers are doing word searches and just voting on whoever's name turns up the most. If Inman is one of the best linemen in the SEC, then this whole conference is in some deep trouble.
