Tech's Broken offense

Finger pointing never solved anything.

A guy claiming to be a former GT player under O'Leary talks about the Chan Gailey / Patrick Nix offense. He refuses to accept that it's all Reggie Ball's fault. It's coaching.

It's an interesting take.

That was interesting because I have a client who played mostly for O'Leary, but also for Gailey. This guy was a defensive player, so I didn't necessarily pay that much attention to what he was saying, but then this shows up in your blog.... Also, in fairness, he wasn't so much dissing Gailey/Nix as he was saying that neither one of them was O'Leary/Friedgen, and actually, that was mostly Friedgen. Said Freidgen saw the field so well that when they would scrimmage and the coaches would start telling them what they did right or wrong, Friedgen had a comment for every position on the field on both sides of the ball. Pretty hard for me to believe at the time, but maybe it was true.

There's an interesting irony in that manifesto -- all of us here in Bulldog Nation have been pining for the day when Jon Tenuta gets snatched up by someone else and his defenses will no longer be a thorn in our side, yet to hear this guy tell it, Tenuta has been the only thing keeping Gailey around this long, i.e., if Gailey didn't have Tenuta's defenses as an annual safety cushion he'd have been out on his ass years ago. So in a way, Tenuta's prowess is responsible for making sure that every Georgia fan's second-favorite Tech coach in all of history (after Bill Lewis, of course) stays put on the Flats.

As Ted Stryker said in "Airplane," "Irony can be pretty ironic sometimes."

You may say finger pointing never solved anything, but it's got Urban Meyer and the Gators to the threshold of a championship. If they win, we may have to acknowledge that finger pointing solves EVERYTHING.

Chan Gailey is a better coach than most people give him credit for. He's only been a part of one losing season and generally improved the offenses of the NFL teams he went to, such as Dallas and Miami.

Ah, Stick, you make a point, but you miss the key factor in Urban Meyer's success.

It's not just the point. It's the way he combines the point AND the stare. For the most part, Urban seems to have relied on "Blue Steel" as his Game Day stare. Strong rumors emanating from Gainesville suggest that for the BCS title game, he's going to kick it up a notch and unveil the ultimate stare: Magnum!!!!!!!!!

Personally, I think Gailey points just fine, but his stare technique is kind of weak. D Rad should buy him some International Male winter line catalogs, and maybe he could pick up a few master staring tips. "Urine Aluminum Foil" just isnt getting it done.

After finishing that passage I realized that the only thing more boring than watching Georgia Tech's offense is reading about it.

Anon 9:53, improved the offense at Dallas? It's true that Gailey did talk Miami into branching out by doing this thing called running the ball (something they had never heard of in Miami before Gailey) but at Dallas Gailey at best kept the status quo in the running game and even lost some ground in the passing game. I'd argue that had as much to do with an aging QB than it did with coaching, but Gailey sure didn't do anything to help. Go look at his official bio on the GT page and show me where it ever extolls his passing offense. Heck, do a search for the word "pass." It shows up maybe four times and every single time it's in reference to the pass defense. Sure Gailey can get a good passing game going with John Elway or Troy Aikman but I could do that. With non-Hall-of-Fame quarterbacks, his passing game is terrible.

I'm not so sure who is to blame for the "Mickey Mouse" nature of the offense but I'd wager that's a group effort. From what we've seen on the field, Ball is talented but not the best at thinking for himself. Maybe the coordinator is dumbing down the offense becaus he has to.
