This begs the question(s): If Gailey still considered Game Ball the best option the last two years, then might that mean Taylor Bennett isn't quite as good as we've been led to believe he is, or that at least he hasn't developed as fast as he should have? Or is Gailey just a dumbass?
My obvious instinct is to lean toward the second option, but who knows. It'd be interesting to hear from a Tech fan who actually has in-depth knowledge into all this.
On a somewhat unrelated note, the ACC should be embarrassed at what they saw Saturday afternoon, not just on the fields but in the stands. Judging by the crowd I would've thought that was the C-USA championship game, not the ACC. Hell, even at UAB we can put a more robust crowd than that in Legion Field every once in a while.
Doug, here's the best that I can give you based upon what has been side on The Hive (an untrustworthy source to say the least) and my own suppositions.
1. Taylor is a more accurate passer than Reggie, but does not have his arm strength. Thus his fly pattern balls could actually be trusted to stay within the field of play. This is purely antithetical to the Gailey\Nix offensive strategy as developed over the last 4 years.
2. Taylor likes to try and thread the needle a little too much in practice and throws into double coverage. What's interesting though is that I have never heard if he throws a lot of INT's or just throws into double coverage. One of these is much worse than the other if it means at least attempting to get the ball to your cyborg WR.
3. Taylor is definitely less mobile than Reggie is. With last year's o-line this was a bit of a problem and I honestly believe Taylor would have been left a pasty stain on the field if he started against anybody other than UCONN. This year the o-line was much improved and Reggie couldn't run due to the leg injury for most of the games leading up to UGA and WF anyway so it wasn't much of a difference.
4. Taylor maybe less than popular with his teammates. The words "kiss ass" got thrown around a lot on the facebook group apparently.
Then again if he threw 3-4 TD passes a game, they might get over that pretty quickly.
So, I honestly don't know what the deal is. The very fact that nobody could take the job from Reggie is very disconcerting. I really don't want to have to start Threet or Nesbitt next year if we could give them each a redshirt and let them learn the position some more that would be great.
Then again without a proven QB coach, and Nix has left something to be desired thus far, I don't know if it will matter who we start.
1. Gotta go with a). At least 10% of those passes sail so high the players don't bother to jump.
2. Didn't they give the Blue-Gray game a mercy killing? Last I checked they still plan on playing the ACCCG next year. Gotta go with d). It's the food, dog.
3. Gotta go with e) "The next time Tech plays 17 academically ineligible players".
4. Gotta go with e) "Taking out the trash".
5. Also gotta go with e) "He could count better than AJ Suggs or Demarius Bilbo".
What did I win, Alex?
