2007 Schedule Comments from the Banner Herald

The Athens Paper took a quick look at the 2007 schedule in Sunday's paper. I've got a follow-up article for tomorrow about possible TV start times next year. Things look very interesting on that front.

In the meantime, just consider that the following teams will be markedly better than they were in 2006:
Oklahoma State - returns virtually all its offensive production from '06
South Carolina - returns 10 of 11 starters on defense, and Blake Mitchell is dramatically better now than he was in Week 2 of 2006.
Kentucky - most of their key players return
Georgia Tech - the loss of Reggie Ball is *clearly* addition by subtraction
Also, we're swapping a bad Colorado team for a Big 12 offensive up and comer, and we drop Mississippi State at home for Bama on the road. Next year will be markedly tougher than this year schedule wise.

While I have all the respect there is for your analysis as a general rule, I think you are overstating the difficulty of the schedule next year. Yes, OSU returns its offense but it takes deep hits on D, particularly on defensive line. Given Bama's current state of confusion, trading them for MSU isn't that bad. I am not saying I wouldn't rather play MSU, but just that this looks like a good year to get Bama. South Carolina, Kentucky and Tech look the same to me; ie., any of them can beat us but only once every four or five years. But mostly, you omitted the key to success, imo: an off week before the WLOCP. Finally, the pain that we suffered this year with so many redshirts not playing will come back to make us smile next year, no matter what the schedule is. I can't wait.

Agree with anon:
If you want to talk about tough forthcoming schedules, look no further than '08.
As for '07, this may be toughest the SEC East has been, top to bottom, in quite some time. While UF will undoubtably be down a notch, UT should be steady and KY, SC and Vandy on the rise.

Anons - I didn't say it was the toughest schedule in the history of the universe.

I just said it will be markedly tougher than last year. And I stand by that. 2006 was the easiest schedule we've had since 2000 or 2001.

Look at OSU's roster again. They lose 4 or 5 DL. All the rest of the defense comes back.

And yes...UF will be down. I can't get my arms around UT yet.

And yes.......'08 and '09 will be ridiculously tough. Toughest ever maybe in '08 depending on how good ASU is.

We will be undefeated heading into Jax next year. Tough 4 game stretch from there, but AU and UK are at home and UF and GT will be at "neutral" sites.

It's certainly not an easy schedule, but it is manageable. In 2008, we'll have to have one hell of a team to get through with less than 3 losses.
