Friday Quick Hits

Chris Hatcher to Georgia Southern is a done deal. No word on what kind of offense he'd run, but Tim Guidera of the Savannah Morning News thinks there is only one option for GSU.

The Savannah Morning News ran an interesting interview with Brian Van Gorder. Local station WTOC also has a great video interview in which BVG discusses his courtship with the Falcons and decision to step down as head coach. Apparently BVG's family was not happy in Statesboro. That surprises me because from my understanding Statesboro is a pretty hospitable place, but then again, no one I know ever took a Cleveland Steamer on the city's greatest source of civic pride. Seriously, what kind of mean-spirited locals wouldn't embrace a coach who lobs these little hand grenades: "If our community and Eagle Nation were better educated, they'd respect what's going on here and what's happening."

On the deportation list? But compared to his brother, he's a saint! Remember Mike, it's about suppressing bad behavior, too.

Jeff Schultz thinks the Falcons need to let go of Michael Vick. It'll be interesting to see if Arthur Blank hangs on to embarrassing but talented bad boys the way he hangs on to worthless good boys.

Just like Mike Vick, minus the talent, the marijuana, and the (alleged) itch below the border.

I'm starting to feel like Chris Rock's take on rap music... I love Vick but damn I'm tired of defending him. Just not worth the trouble anymore. I still think he's a MUCH better option and gives the Falcons a lot better chance of winning than Schaub, but just like the geniuses who were always screamin for Doug Johnson, how have those guys ever worked out when Vick's been out injured? Not very well in case you forgot. And judging by the 15 minutes I streamed mayhem this morning on 790thezone.com, it's already starting. SCHAUB FEVER in full effect baby! Who am I to even argue with em anymore, I'm about one more ridiculous story away of washing my hands completely of the Falcons forever anyway...

Don't get me wrong, not as much as I love UGA but I still always support the home pro teams too... but D,JD. They're making it awful hard lately aren't they? I don't know what to make of the LaRoche thing either. Obviously we need relief in a bad way but who's gonna cover the entire right half of the infield this year? Starting pitching isn't too solid anymore either IMVHO. Oh well, it was a good run... : /

PS, and oh yeah, good call... Brooking BLOWS.

One thing that is a guarantee...Hatcher will NOT run the triple option offense. He will run the Mumme/Franklin offense that he has run since he was the QB for the Blazers in the early 90's. I think it is a good hire for GSU, but it may take a few years to get the personnel in there to run the offense.

I imagine they'll give Petrino a shot with Vick first before any drastic decisions.

The difference between Doug Johnson and Matt Schaub is that only Atlanta fans thought Doug Johnson was a good QB. Everyone else thought they were nuts. Schaub on the other hand is pretty universally beleived to be a decent QB. That doesn't mean he'll be a great QB or that he'll be any better than Vick but it does most likely mean he'll end up starting somewhere at least for a season or two.

From a football perspective, getting rid of Vick isn't such a bad idea if they can do it in a way that doesn't destroy the cap. They've got a decent QB in Schaub who can probably carry things enough to find a new franchise QB (or if Schaub is good enough, he could potentially take that role). They'd also have some extra cash to spend on upgrading the rest of the team. As long as they don't go into cap purgatory, Atlanta could dig out of the hole in about two to three seasons if the management knows what they're doing.

From a business perspective, the idea of getting rid of Vick is stupid. And I don't use the word stupid lightly. Vick sells far too many tickets all by himself to ever think of getting rid of him. Do what you can to control him and then cry about his behavior all the way to the bank. Repeat until he no longer sells.

Anyone who remembers that embarrasing day when the entire stadium was upgraded to lower level seating for the Pats game because there just weren't that many people in the stadium would probably agree with me on that.

Let's see - I grew up loving the Falcons with QB and team leader Steve Bartkowski. I once sent him a letter (age 10) requesting an autograph. He sent me a signed picture with a note quoting a verse from Galatians. If you recall, SB was a helluva Qb with a rocket arm and very good recievers and backs to complement.

And now we have Vick as the QB and team "leader". Freakish talent but with a thugish persona. If I were to mail Mike a letter asking for an autograph, he'd probably send an invoice and a joint. The accompanying quote would be from a rap song and would mention the club and the "bitches".

Let me say it plainly - Mike Vick is a terrible person, a terrible leader, a great talent, and a decent quarterback. When does the line between income and reputation/integrity become black and white? When Falcon fans and Atlanta supporters choose who is right and good over who is simply not. I'd rather support a great man with a losing record than a thug POS with a winning one. And to be fair, Bartkowski was no loser and Vick is no great winner. One advantage is that Vick doesn't have to go through Roger Staubach and the Dallas Cowboys of the late 70's, early 80's.

It's good to one of the few people in this state whose favorite NFL teams isn't the Falcons.

One of the few? Have you ever actually been to see a Falcons game? It's not very uncommon to see more fans from the opposing side in the stadium. It's not as bad now that the Falcons are in the NFC South but I remember the Rams, 49ers, and Saints each getting an extra home crowd every year. And when the Cowboys or Steelers come to town, it's even worse. There are many many many many many people in this state who regularly watch the NFL but are not in any, way, shape or form Atlanta Falcons fans.

Anytime anyone tells me Keith Brooking is 'good' ... I also respond with 'better than Takeo Spikes?'

Hatcher apparently had the GSU folks eating out of his hand. Sounds like he remember Tressel being introduced at Ohio State.

Hatcher says that his offense will resemble the old Hambone except they will throw it forward.

Hatcher also said they will run an offense kinda like WVU. The spread is in.

Only been to 2 Falcons games since they opened the Dome. One was against the Vikings last year, and the crowd was 99% Falcons fans, and there were easily 30k folks wearing Vick jerseys.

The other one was '99 or '00 vs. the Saints, and I don't remember the crowd split.
