Spring Practice Player Profiles

Image: Georgiadogs.com

I haven't done as much linking to Spring Practice reports, so I'm going to play catch up and knock a bunch of player, position and coach profiles out of the way all at once. You've seen most of them on other internets already, but here goes. (the last few days only)

Offense:
-- Friday's injury update on J. Davis and Vance - DawgPost.com
-- Buzz Around Moreno Grows- Macon Telegraph
-- Q&A with Eason - UGASports.com
-- Mikey Henderson's confidence - DawgPost.com
-- Bobo struggles with "cause and effect" - ABH***

Defense:
-- Miller in the Middle - AJC
-- Byrd ahead in Safety Battle - ABH
-- Prince Miller - MaconTelegraph
-- Kiante Tripp Q&A - UGASports.com
-- Good competition at Safety - Savannah Now

In my opinion, the most important of those articles is the one about Brandon Miller moving to the middle. As the article correctly points out, he really hasn't made any impact plays of note ini three years despite heavy playing time at the SAM linebacker position.

All the news about his move is positive, and he appears to be adjusting to the new position. My expectations are pretty low given the production of the past three years, but if he turns it on in the middle it would be enormous for the development of this defense. Best of luck to him. Late bloomers are a great thing.

***The Bobo headline is sarcasm. I'm only kidding.

I'm happy that Miller seems to be working out at MIKE, but the article that got me excited was Moreno's. If he plays this year, great, but I'm already looking forward to next year - when we might finally have an everydown back. Our agregate RB yds/TD's has been fine the last few years, but it's made our running game boring and too dependent on the offensive line. Too dependent in the sense that for the first few carries, the running back we just subbed in doesn't know what to expect, how fast so and so is, how this or that linebacker likes to tackle, etc. It's like building a house with three contractors, switching them out every few days. It's confusing, slows development, and never lets the players feel responsible, comfortable, or rhythmic.

We've had an everydown back for about 5 years. We just don't play them everydown and/or the OL doesn't block for them consistently.

Hopefully, the OL will improve now that our "ace" OL talent evaluator is in Birmingham.

I'm having trouble getting too fired up about Moreno b/c the quotes about him aren't that different that those about T. Brown last offseason or Ware's FR year.

PWD - your opinion, would Ware have been better off switching to lb say last year rather than continuing as an rb. He had a good rep as an lb in high school. Good size and better speed for the outside positions.

I have no idea.

However, I do know that Ware isn't all that big. He's just very buff. He's maybe 6'0" and 220 lbs. That would make him our smallest starting linebacker in about 10 years. Even smaller than Jarvis.

Danny was screwed all the way around. He's not fast enough to be an NFL tailback, and he's too small to be a big time Fullback. And he's definitely too small for an NFL LB.

Why not go pro? He's not going to get taller or much bigger. So might as well go pro now.
