CALEB KING APPARENTLY QUALIFIES

Caleb King: Image: AJC

Yes, I have used the all caps war font headline. According to numerous published reports, Caleb King has qualified via the SAT, and he will graduate from GAC. All systems appear to be go for his enrollment at UGA.The next big date for the 2007 recruiting class is the June 7th Major League Baseball Draft. From there we may get some hint as to whether or not Israel Troupe (WR, Tifton) will be picked high enough to sway him into professional baseball. At least one MLB mock draft leaves him out of the first and second rounds. So there's that.

Please, please change the picture away from the under-performing "I'm Georgia" towel. Don't jinx King, the best RB from the state since Garrison Hearst. I was told the towel was being retired to the dark basement of Butts-Mehre, on a shelf with the black helmet stripe, a jar of pickle juice, a "Support the Goff team" bumper sticker, and a "Quincy for Heisman" poster. Have I been misled?

That's definitely welcome news considering the unexpected departure of Paul Oliver.

So now the question is "To redshirt or not?". I think so given the depth at the position (Moreno and Lumpkin looked great at G-Day). That and there's simply too much to learn in 3 weeks of practice. I suppose he could be used sparingly in some games but that would seem to be a waste of a playing year. Let Lumpkin get his play this year, Moreno our feature back next year with King right behind him. King will have the opportunity to learn a TON from these guys this year.

2008 is looking better and better every minute. Moreno, King in the backfield with Stafford throwing to Troupe and Green. Just damn.

"The best RB from the state since Garrison Hearst"??

Really? To name a few guys who might disagree:

Ronnie Brown
Michael Cooper
Kregg Lumpkin
Darius Walker
Carlos Brown
Thomas Brown

All I'm saying is, let's not get carried away here.

On top of that, the kid obviously needs to take a redshirt and get used to college life. To paraphrase Chris Rock, "You think I'm gonna do well in community college? Slow down.. it's pretty obvious high school was kicking my butt."

hobnail, you forgot Mr. "Next Herschel" himself, Jasper Sanks. Also remember the all time great Jabari "Peach Bowl" Davis.

Lets see the boy tear the ACL of an opposing safety before crowning him King of Kings.

Wow, such negativity. On paper, and film, he seems much better than more than half of the guys listed above. On paper and film, anyway... just sayin. Other than Stafford & AJ Green, who will give us decommit and grades concerns for almost another full year, Caleb King has far and away the best 'highlight reels' of any prospect we've signed lately, at least in the Richt era. JMO... I was VERY excited to see this news break today. GATA King

Based on his recruitment. Based on his academics. And based on his ability.

Do you think he stays for 5 years?

I don't.

I think this is a 3 year kid. 4 years TOPS.

So why not use him in the slot, kickoffs, TB and heck let him take snaps in our own "Wildcat" formation. He's gifted. Might as well play him while we've got him.

Because nothing about his recruitment suggests that he's going to look to stick around for 5 years. So what does redshirting him get you?

Good point, PWD. However, if academics are a concern, redshirting him may help him adjust to college life and to his new academic career so that he may remain eligible for the remaining years. That's probably a pretty big IF though. The tutoring program for student athletes is pretty strong. Either way, I'm excited that he's with us. I can't wait to see him out on the field whether it's this year or next.

After watching high school film of Mudcat Elmore and Brandon Miller, I'm sure there were many(including some of our coaches) who thought they would be around for only 3 years.

In 7 combined years on the field, how many tackles have they had? Maybe 30? Am I the only one who is terrified of the though of Brandon Miller starting at MLB. Most of the tackles he has made were when he was dragging a guy down 15-20 yards up-field after getting beat in coverage.
