David Jacobs #99 seen here in 2000
Today's AJC has a great feel good piece on David Jacobs in sort of a where are they now article. Jacobs is now with HomeBanc Mortgage, and he seems to be doing really well.
Jacobs' story is compelling because of a 2001 stroke that he experienced during practice that caused him to lose control over one side of his body. The stroke, which I think happened the week of the Auburn game, ended his playing career.
My most vivid memory of Jacobs was the 2001 Senior Awards Gala after Richt's first season.Richt was nearing the end of the awards presentation, and he started to talk about a new award which honored hard work, leadership, courage in the face of adversity and all these other towering traits. Then he got choked up and said, "It's now called the David Jacobs Award. And David Jacobs is the first winner. I know he's in a wheel chair tonight, but if he can't come up here. I'm coming out there." (Paraphrase)
So Richt heads over to Jacobs (who's in a tux in his wheelchair). As Richt arrives, Jacobs shocks him by standing up to greet him. Needless to say, it was one of those moments that would make the Grinch's heart two sizes larger. Lots of paint fumes in the building causing some watery eyes among some pretty large men.
David Jacobs. Damn Good Dawg.

The other David Jacobs moment that I'll never forget was before the 2002 UGA-GT game when he walked on to the field as the team captain and Sanford Stadium errupted! No surprise that we finished the game with a 51-7 beat down of the bumble bees. The only other time I can remember the stadium being that loud was when Kevin Butler hit his 61 yd. FG to beat Clemson. Another one of life's memorable moments.
Actually, I think he had the stroke during Spring Football.
David definitely played in the 2001 UT game in Neyland. He definitely had his stroke during the season.
