Empty Bleachers

The game went as well as we could have hoped. Geno Adkins and the D Line controlled the line of scrimmage, keeping Savage under control. The offensive line had its moments, but Bobo took the pressure off them with receiver screens. A few non-football thoughts about Saturday ...

First, I understand this may be a minority position, but I don't like the new video montage at the beginning of the fourth quarter with P.O.D. blaring "Boom." Call me an old codger, but I'm a band man. I like to hear the band kids work and I think they are a lot more fun to listen to. I hate piped in music of any sort during the game. (I'm looking at you, Auburn.) Krypton Fanfare should be enough to get us up and off our feet. Plus, the video was cut so fast that it was hard to tell what was being shown on some of those clips.

If you didn't see Josh Kendall's report on the recruiting visit for Adarius Bowman's little brother, Michael, you can find it here. I'm not sure what the recruiting staff was expecting on the visit, but they should have known what the Bowman's would wear.

It was great to see Andre 3000 on the Georgia sideline, chest bumping Matt Stafford. He's a lot cooler than T. Boone, but I doubt he will front us much cash. Where was Big Boi or Sleepy Brown?

Also, nice to see Commissioner Slive at the game. The Dawgs didn't disappoint the commish either, unlike the Big 10 Network brass, who had to eat the fact that their marquee team this year fell victim to the biggest upset in college football history on their inaugural broadcast.

Amen on being a Band Man. Two things I have to give the UGAA credit on though:

1) The pregame video after Battle Hymn. I thought it might be too much video for the stadium to handle, but I really liked it and I think the crowd did too.

2) They didn't cut the band out completely. It'd be one thing to show a video and that's it, but it's much different to do both. At least they're keeping the tradition around.

I could have done without the Eminem in the 3rd quarter as well.

Trust me, the recruits (and most students) welcome the tune 'here comes the BOOM!'. Like it or not, it is effective to get the energy going.

It has a place in the show, but I agree, it can't and shouldn't, compete with Krypton Fanfare.

Go Dawgs!

I am a student and i thought the new videos were awesome. Now that we know what is coming, it will be rocking when the finish the drill video goes on at the end of the 3rd quarter against carolina. I liked all the vidoes.

student perspective: the pregame video was good. alot of people really liked that.

i think it was a chrysler/jeep promo commerical type thing with the eminem and POD. everyone thought that was extremely stupid and boring.

I agree on not taking away from the band. When you have a good one, use it. However I don't mind mixing in some changes timer permitting.

I'm not really sure how to react to the Bowman thing. Yeah, his parents should be there supporting their son. And I really can't blame them for wearing their OSU stuff. I'm not sure how I feel about them being asked to change shirts. But I feel confident in saying the Bowmans would not have felt comfy participating in the Dawg Walk with their orange.

But at the same time, they're also there supporting their younger son who possibly has the chance to go to UGA. And I don't care what the circumstances are, a recruit and his family should always be respectful of any school offering him such an opportunity. So that's also something to consider. I guess the lesson learned is, he's a GA kid. He could've been invited for an official visit another weekend.

Otherwise it was a great weekend and a good start. But lots of football is ahead of us. And it won't always be so rosey.

I place the blame for the Bowman situaton squarely on the parents. I have no problem with them wanting to support their oldest son, but to show up as invited guests to a UGA function in OSU apparel? Come on. What did they think would happen? If they wanted to truly support their oldest son then they should have declined the invite this weekend due to a conflict of interest and come another weekend with their youngest son. It is not like their are not other home games. Then they could have sat with the other OSU parents and worn what ever they wanted.

i think that with the benefit of hindsight everyone would probably do the Bowman thing differently.

I don't have a better suggestion. It's just a really awkward thing.

The Bowmans probably asked specifically for the Ok State game so they could see the older son play in person. I imagine they don't get many opportunities to see him play so close to Chattanooga.

The Bowmans could have gotten tickets from OSU. Every player usually gets 2 tix to an away game and many of the players will trade tix in situations like this, i.e. Bobby Reid gives up his 2 so the Bowmans can bring more and then Bowman repays the favor for B. Reid later in the season. They definitely could have sat in with the Okies.

I absolutely despise all blaring advertising at a football game. I don't want to know were UGA is hiding in a sandwich. I don't want to know the girl's whatever team standing on the field during a time out. I don't want a ticket to see another award winning professor. I want to know who made the last tackle in the middle. We have a very good band. Let'm play. If I wanted a Falcon type atmosphere, I'd buy Falcon tickets. Pros can't afford big bands so they use a P.A. system. That is their short coming, not Georgia's.

I heard that some students were trying to sing "I'd like to know where you got the Knowshon" to the tune of Rock The Boat. This is freaking awesome. I am all for made up groups songs a la English Premier League. Any thoughts on widescale implementation??

I have thought this since I was a freshman and couldn't get tickets to the game. The band blows.......how many seats does a tuba take up, let alone multiple tubas and horns and drums and blah blah. An ipod pulgged into the PA does more and takes up much less room than the 2000 students I could fit in the now empty band section.

Halftime with the band is lame too. I would rather a guy doing card tricks or the break dance club or those little kids from the local gymnastics place that perform during the basketball games.

I will now hear a back lash from every band geek who reads this......If I am found choked in my sleep by some gold braided border off a band uniform, look for readers of this blog.

Dude - you just said you prefer the breakdance club over the red coats.

That's like saying "I'm a vegan" or "I like to have sex with dead chicks."

It basically stops traffic too much to recover from.

i just dont understand the huge contradiction of having a problem with utilizing highlight films with contemporary music in the background, yet being really excited with andre 3000 in attendence. am i the only one who finds the logic missing a bit?

first of all, the band is awesome; it is an integral part of college football. there is nothing like hearing the drums on gameday. however, i am also really excited about the use of highlight films before and during the games. what is wrong with showing off great plays made by the dawgs to the tunes of some great pump up music. (i must admit i think eminem music is gay, it would be much better with some acdc or metallica).

second of all, the fact that andre 3000 was at the game is pretty cool, but lets be honest. i'm sure he doesnt give a crap about georgia football, except when their winning. if GT has a decent season this year, which i think they may, im sure he will also be a great jacket fan, too. Represent the A-town ya know. so honestly, its good publicity, but he is just a bandwagon fan, so who needs him?
