Travis Fain with the Macon Telegraph talked with Charley Trippi about the photos of him in black jerseys and the rumors that the team had worn black jerseys during the 1943 Rose Bowl. Charley says he never wore a black jersey during a game. Interesting.
Either way...there's a precedent now.

How old is Charley Trippi??? Can he even remember how to spell his name. There's pictures of him wearing a black jersey.
Charle said he never wore a black jersey during a game. All of the pictures I have seen are posed shots that could have even been recolored off of a black and white. On a black and white, a red jersey may have looked black.
I pulled a picture from the LA Times on January 2nd, and while the photo is really grainy, I'm pretty sure the team's in black jerseys. It's still damn difficult to tell. I know someone who works at the Times, and I'm trying to pull an original copy of the paper.
Anyways, it's an interesting question.
anon 8:22 - Trippi remembers more about football than you're likely to ever know. It hardly seems a stretch to think he'd know what color jersey he wore in the biggest game of his life.
Many of those old magazines didn't use actual photos....it could easily be an artist's rendering. And an artist sitting in an office a thousand miles from Athens who didn't know a football jersey from a chia pet, at that.
