Updated: In 1976, Lou Holtz quit the New York Jets as Head Coach midseason with a 3-10 record to become the head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks. In 2007, Petrino has done the same thing. He turned in his resignation to the Falcons, and now he's the new head coach of the Razorbacks.
For Arkansas, it's nothing short of a home run hire. However, Petrino is a douche. Leaving the Falcons mid-season is a douche move, but he's an exceptional college football coach. The net result of the SEC Coaching Shuffle is Ole Miss and Arkansas both upgraded. Here's some reaction to the news:

..."he's on the cusp of being announced as the new head coach of the Falcons."
Think you meant razorbacks.
wonder if that Renfree kid will be contacting el douche bag?
fixed it.
Man - the SEC just keeps getting harder & harder....There really isn't a bad coach in the league anymore.
Granted, Petrino walked into a mess of a situation with ATL, but he seemed to have a "my way or the highway attitude" that didn't fly with the pro players. I wonder how it will fly with some of the crazy Hog fans.
Now, if only we can get that putz Miles to go to Michigan, we'll be set.
It wouldn't surprise me if George Bush showed up in Atlanta tomorrow and declared the Falcon's camp a disaster area.
Petrino was in way over his head and I don't blame him for jumping. He was NOT going to turn this thing around.
I hope Arthur Blank really takes time to get a coach with NFL experience and can kick ass in the locker-room. (Please, not Chan Gailey)
My favorite quote:
"The Falcons have been firing blanks for years...it's time for Blank to start firing Falcons."
IMO, Blank should go after Bill Cowher. Instant credibility and proven winner with integrity. He is the model of stability in the NFL. Pay him whatever he wants!
Home run hire? Considering his past, if that's the case, it is more of a "walk off" homerun hire...
Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. Cowher is one of the only guys out there with the toughness, determination, and integrity to right the sinking ship that is the Falcons.
As for Petrino, I'm only a casual Falcons fan (my primary allegiance is with the Redskins), but Jeff Schultz had it pegged: Petrino's a coward. He had a chance to rebuild the Falcons and maybe become a hero, but instead he decided it was too hard and bolted. I'll lay even odds that he will be nowhere near Fayetteville by this time in 2010.
I wonder if Blank wishes he had talked Bernie Marcus into buying the Falcons and he had built the acquarium. Sure, the whale sharks keep dying, but they battle to the end.
It's the curse of the Clampetts -- the undercapitilized, low-IQ Smith family goes away; Blank, who is far from either, arrives -- and things just keep getting worse.
Makes me glad I willed myself to stop caring about the Falcons during the Glanville years.
Is Schottenheimer working right now? He'd be a great coach to get the Falcons in the playoffs. Once there, they'd need someone else to turn the coaching over to since Schott is to losing playoff games what Dan Reeves is to losing Super Bowls.
I would like Blank to hire Jeff Schultz, Mark Bradley or Terrance Moore for the next HC. I would like to see a sports writer handle the job, especially since they know it all. I know, it sounds crazy, but heck, things couldn't get much worse, so while you're at the bottom, take advantage of it.
Petrino will be looking for a new job every year, even at Arkansas. Look at his past since 2002, he interviewed for jobs every year since. He won't be there long.
