Evil Richt rocks the airwaves
Mark Richt spent several minutes with the 790theZone morning crew on Wednesday. During the interview, Richt ditched the "Awe Shucks" routine that he learned from Papa Bowden. Instead, the humble coach went straight for the Evil Richt Black Hat, and he gave an incredibly entertaining interview covering topics such as:
- -- The BCS
-- Playoffs in college football
-- LSU and The Ohio State University
-- The media
-- Sugar Bowl Match-up with Hawaii
-- "No Win" nature of the Hawaii game (he blows that idea up)
-- The Hawaii offense
-- His expectations for the 2008 Pre-season Ranking
-- Caleb King
The 790theZone guys asked him, "Do you think you should be ranked #1 next year?" Normally, Richt would poor mouth and awe shucks here and say something like "Well...I don't know about that. There are lots of good teams out there. We just have to take care of business, and that will sort itself out." Not this interview. This time he says (paraphrase because you can listen for yourself) "We should start somewhere between #1 and 3."
BOOM! That's how you embrace the expectations without heating the flames to new heights. Every UGA fan will be expecting us to be pretty damn strong next year so why run from that? Embrace it. I about wrecked my car when he said it because I wasn't expecting him to be so blunt.
I felt more confident that we're showing up ready to ball in New Orleans than ever after listening to the interview.

It's days like today that I pray he grows a black goatee and pimps out the "Evil Spock" look. Maybe throw some soup at reporters. Threaten to kill June Jones.

I hope that the rest of the bulldawg nation takes Hawaii as serious as Mark Richt.
I loved how much Richt was saying that OSU stinks and the BCS is crap.
On a side note, ESPN's Mark May needs to be fired for incompetence by picking Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl.

yeah, Mark May let his hate for UGA show yet again. All of his points were pathetic. I just need to start muting the tv whenever he's about to pick a UGA game!
Look...Mark May hates UGA...period.
He is still bitter that his Pittsburgh Panthers of 1980 didn't get to play UGA for the national championship that year, even though they lost to Penn State. He still insists that they were way better than Notre Dame or UGA that year. What a douche.
Believe me, Mark May wouldn't pull for UGA if he was on the team plane over the mountains and both engines went out.
What does he have to lose by picking Hawaii? If they lose, he'll blame it on Cole's concussion.
Meanwhile...
I think Mark Richt is finally realizing that the "Awe Shucks" routine is not figured into the BCS rankings. It certainly doesn't matter to ESPN.
Richt is loved at UGA. He's going to be the coach for a long, long time...or, as long as he wants to be. Why not unleash some emotion? Dawg fans love it and it pumps up the team. Seriously, what is the worst that can happen?
And Tebow winning the Heisman is a good thing...
Now he has a permanent bullseye on his chest. EVERY team he faces from now on will be out to pound Mr. Heisman.

Couple thing..
1) This is the most Bowden-like Richt has ever sounded. (I mean that in the nicest way possible)
2) He rightly points out tOSU's weaknesses, but he voted them #1 in his poll. Which is it coach?
Please tell me you guys caught the part of one of the Zone's interviews when the guys refer to Richt as "Boca". Jim Kelly was on earlier and was talking about what a pretty boy Richt was at the U.

I agree, that's probably Richt's explanation for OSU being #1 in his vote. Richt even said on ESPN that he thinks there should be a rule that non-conference champs can't play in the NCG, but he still thought UGA should have moved from 4 to 2 because that's the way it SHOULD work. So even if OSU played a poor schedule, they were supposed to move from 3 to 1. UGA just got screwed (in a logical sort of way).
No worries Jason, we all picked up on the "pretty boy" comment. I have no problem believing he was at the U, because he still is!! In a good way . . .
That interview is just pure confidence. Loved it.
