Sugar Hangover

I don't have any insightful game analysis. I have yet to watch the game again and I didn't pay super close attention to the game after somewhere around the middle of the first quarter, or when I realized what was about to happen. You already know what happened. We were focused. We were stronger. We were faster. A workman-like destruction of a team that was overwhelmed from the beginning. I can't remember feeling that concerned for an opposing quarterback's health since we left Auburn's Gabe Gross a bloody heap in 1998.

After I watch the game, I guess I should have plenty of bad things to say about the FOX broadcast. I had one friend say that he couldn't watch much of the game with the sound on because of FOX's coverage. He said he might rather have Lincoln Financial doing the game than FOX. Orson ripped Thom Brennaman repeatedly yesterday as well. If last night's Fiesta Bowl is any indication, I can look forward to repeated iso shots of the Bud Light sign in the stadium.

A few thoughts on the atmosphere:

1. I really enjoyed the street preachers at Canal and Bourbon screaming at all the "sinners" and "drunkards" making their way from the bars to the Superdome. They told me that Jesus hates football when I went by them and I responded with a "Jesus loves the Dawgs, though. He loves everybody." They then yelled at me about damnation through a megaphone. Jonathan Edwards would have been proud of those guys.

2. Paul has already covered this, but the Hawai'i fans certainly deserved a tip of the hat. Paul hopes to have more on this soon. Almost all traveled a titanic distance to watch the game and enjoy New Orleans. Then when they got there, they cheered for their guys the whole game, even when they were getting beaten badly. Afterward, each one I talked to was polite and courteous, acknowledging that the Dawgs were a great team and that they lost to a much better group of athletes. No excuses. I wasn't sure what to make of the Warrior fans before the game, but they showed themselves to be a great group of devoted fans, willing to support their team with time and serious dollars, even when they're getting waylayed from all angles. Until we meet again, Go Warriors.

3. We may have booed their band before the game (along with President Adams and Ray Nagin), but there was no booing Hawai'i's throng of hula dancing girls. I'm generally a critic of dance lines, but those hula girls were a lot of fun to watch.

4. LSU fan was out to announce his presence on Bourbon Street. I saw at least two LSU mobs chanting "L-S-U" and "Tiger Bait" at fans of both persuasions. I hope no Dawg fans were at the Peach Bowl harassing Auburn or Clemson fans for their New Year's Eve amusement.

5. Is it me or is every bowl halftime show the same? An amalgam of high school bands playing one song loudly and repeatedly. Seriously, can we get some frisbee chasing dogs? I'd even take twenty minutes of the ha'a dance or the hula girls. Anything but a huge group of high school kids in mismatching uniforms.

Be sure to listen for the "First and Ten for the Gators" when we got a first down. Not only were the announcers bad, but they insulted us by calling us Gators.

Also, why do I have a feeling that all BCS bowl games will be blowouts? This is what the BCS was supposed to prevent. You will not be able to tell who the best team after these games. Is there any question so far that UGA isn't the best team?

Q,
When you watch the game will you make a note of how many people we rushed normally. I know we were in the 30 defense (3-down) most of the first half, but how often were we bringing a LB or DB also? In the 2nd half it looked like we went back to our normal 4-3 defensive front. I am just curious to see if we were that effective with a 3 man rush or if we just played 3 down.

In case you missed it, Tyler Donovan (Wisc) also took a heck of a beating earlier in the day, but managed to stick it out.

You could see the hula girls in quite a few of the shots on FOX, but I don't remember seeing a close up of them. After hearing my friend's girlfriend go on about how tiny their outfits were, I was wishing that WGN was doing the broadcast as they never omit cheesecake while the Cubs are playing.

Yeah, at the game I had an LSU fan sitting behind me with all his homeaux gear on. Every time UGA could make a mistake like a penalty or missed tackle, etc., he would yell "That's why you aren't in the National Title game."

God almighty, may we rip the corndog-smelling D-bags a new one next October.

Just in case you guys dont know, very very few Christians are like those preachers you are talking about,if they even were because they could've been jahovah's witness or mormon etc. and you are right about saying God loves everyone.i just thought i would throw that in there. man that was a great game. GO DAWGS!!

My favorite LSU fan comment of the night was when a older fan behind us said "Man, I'm glad we don't play you guys next season". When he was informed by several Georgia fans that they do, his response was "Oh S***!"

How bout that Bonerama national anthem we had! I hear they're playing Boneroo next year!

Joel said...

Evidently they (Bonerama) are playing Smith's Olde Bar on Feb 13th

Unknown said...

I mean them no offense, congratulations and I would kill to be in their shoes. It was simply funny to see "Bonerama" on FOX, the same station that brings us "Family Guy." Wait, yeah, that's about right.

Joel said...

We were cracking up at the name. I wasn't too impressed with their national anthem, but listening to the stuff on their myspace page, they sound pretty good

Well, hell, are you going? We all should.

BON and several other sites are saying that Texas might be close to hiring Will Muschamp as DC.

To add to what Anon 8:42 said, Jonathan Edwards would NOT be proud of those guys.

good stuff. i love your blog, thanks for all your posting.

by the way, Jonathan Edwards would not have loved the behavior, methods or message of those guys. Check him out...liberal english professors take him out of context, he was nothing like that.

I truly felt bad for the Hawaii kids in the second quarter.

They were betrayed by so-called "experts" like Mark May who told them they were going to win...that they could play with teams like Georgia.

Unfortunately for them, the light at the end of the tunnel was actually a four-engine train with over a mile of boxcars, all painted black with giant G's on the side.

Appalachian State would have given us a much better game.

By the way, Steveodawg, I did catch the announcers calling us "gators" the other night. That offended me more than anything else they did that night.

oh my god. i love frisbee catching dogs more than anything. great idea!!

to hell with all LSU fans... for every one decent one there's at least 20 terrible ones. They better be glad we turned it on late for the 2nd straight year because they're fading fast and at this rate the suckeyes might actually break the streak against those fairy purple wearing coonass swamptrash losers. The west couldn't be more weak at this point, the beasts are definitely residing in the east right now.

But yeah, glad we got religion out of the way. Why don't we go ahead and knock out politics in this section too and then just flush it. :P

As I have discussed here in my blog entry on Puritan Punch, unfortunately, the Puritans (of which Jonathan Edwards was a spiritual heir) get a bad rap. As I have discussed in my entry on Homecoming at UGA 2007, manic street preachers (not the band) do a disservice to Christianity.

There was an LSU fan sitting in front of us who was a joyt obe around. He was friendly and kept buying everyone around him those $12.00 Jack and Cokes.

Overall, great game and great experience in New Orleans.

Changing the subject a bit here, but is there any reason we won't be ranked #2 in the final BCS standings this year, given the losses to VT, OU, and either LSU/OSU? Does anyone think it's possible for us to get jumped in the polls by USC, KU, WVU?

Anonymous said...

Anon @ 9:21am

I was thinking and talking the exact same thing this morning. I was pulling hard for KU to beat VT last night. I was on another board and a VT fan was actually arguing that they should have been in the MNC game. I'm sure he won't be around today.

As it stands 2 of the 3 teams that jumped us in the final polls lost their BCS games. We all knew Chokelahoma would do what they always do. The VT loss was just icing on the cake. I will be pulling for LSU against the Suckeyes, but I would find it quite funny if all 3 teams that jumped us lost their bowl game.

JasonC said...

Anon 9:21,

I could see USC being #2 and us at #3. I am not saying that is right, but let's face it, when have the pollsters and the BCS done anything right in recent history?

If the LSU-OSU game is a blow out that also helps us, as we would probably leap over the loser of a blow out.
Even though a lot of people didn't think Illinois should be in the BCS or the Rose Bowl, they are a BCS team and USC's win was as equally as impressive as ours. So there is a chance the West Coast will unite and vault USC to #2.
However, this is all my speculation at this point.

I had no problems with Hawaii fans other than their naivete regarding the games ultimate outcome. In fact, it was kinda adorable that they thought a win was on its way. Here is an article discussing my personal experience.

All the Hawaii fans I met told me they were gonna beat the DAWGS.

All the LSU fans I met told me they were glad they weren't playing the DAWGS.

Seems the LSU fans might have a bit more football knowledge than the Hawaii fans.

Obviously, that was totally awesome.

As an aside, was anybody in Jackson Square on New Year's Eve? That was an unbelievable scene.

GO DAWGS!

There is no "final BCS poll" after the bowl games. The purpose of the BCS poll is to select a number 1 and number 2 to play in the championship game. The BCS championship, by rule, goes to the winner of that game, so there is no need from a post bowl game polls.

That being said, there is a final, post bowl game writers' AP poll and a post bowl game coaches poll, and I assume that Massey and Colley and the other computer folks have their post bowl game results. However, the "final BCS poll" cam eout December 2nd.

Unknown said...

While there is not final BCS poll, I was under the impression that the coaches were obligated to rank the winner and loser of the national championship game 1 and 2, respectively. Granted, the AP can do what it likes.

Will the game be re-aired anytime soon? I know ESPN replays the games. I'd like to see this one again and record it this time. Do they sell videos of bowl games?

As far as the last time we administered such a beating on a QB, Kentucky's Dusty Bonner came to mind- between the hedges in 1999 I think? If I remember we sacked him 10-12 times and knocked him down damn near 20.

Enjoy the Brenneman/Davis fiasco...

The DVD of the Sugar Bowl is available on the Sugar Bowl website. I'm thinking of trying to get a recording of the Scott Howard broadcast and trying to sync it up with the DVD. Since I was at the game, I didn't have to experience the commentary abortion that was the FOX broadcast and I'd like to keep it that way.

Marcus Howard's hit on Colt Brennan reminded me of the Alabama game a few years back when AL inserted an already injured Brodie Croyle. We send Odell on a blitz and he just punishes Croyle as mercilessly as we pounded Hawaii. Apparently, Odell told someone later that he could hear the air leaving Croyle's lungs. Classic. I think Croyle played only one down.

You have the wrong theologian. Jonathan Edwards was a tremendous believer that God's grace and mercy alone saves the sinner. It is easy to misinterpret his most famous sermon, "Gators in the Hands of an Angry God."

I have read the blogs about Hawaii being a class group, playing it out to the end and all of that crap until I am ready to puke. No program lets their #29 Keenon Jones do what he did to Mikey Henderson without so much as one coach grabbing his facemask and giving him a butt chewing. CLASSLESS. Instead he was allowed to strut the sidelines and chest bump the rest of those Polynesian thugs. Shame on the pac 10 refs for not evicting him on the spot, shame on June Jones, I believe it was at his instruction the hit was delivered. Shame on the team Chaplin, the waterboy, the noble WAC for not giving this punk reason to regret his actions. Face it Dawg Nation, we could be sending get well wishes to Mikey at the Shepard Spinal Center. I wish the type of knee injury that Robert Edwards suffered the next time #29 steps on the field. Hawaii, Class, NOT
