Will the last talented Tech player please turn off the lights?

Promising young Georgia Tech player and former blue chip recruit D.J. Donley has apparently left the Georgia Tech program. Donley is rumored to be considering a transfer to South Carolina. Donley joins Colin Peek (GT tight end) who recently left, and virtually every major blue chip recruit that was part of the 2008 signing class in rejecting the Paul Johnson regime.

Well...not everyone is leaving Tech. They got three commitments recently for the 2008 class.
  • Tevin Washington (QB/ATH) chose GT over offers from Alabama A&M, Troy, Texas Southern, Georgia Southern, Memphis and Arizona State.

  • Phil Smith (OT) - No known offers. Although, he was getting letters from LSU and UF. You know, I once got a letter as a high school senior from the Nashville Auto Diesel College. I wonder if they were going to offer a scholarship to me?

  • Lee Butler (DB/WR) - Butler was a former Duke commit, but gave up all that glamor for life on the flats. His other offers were Air Force, Duke and Furman. Seriously. I'm not making this up.
Georgia Tech is building a program that the entire Sun Belt Conference will soon admire with awe.

I'm almost literally giggling with anticipation over this year's televised execution of the Old Gold Tickle Pilers...

I agree about Phil Smith but my question is always how is a guy who is supposedly 6'6" 280 not have any offers from anyone prior to GT? Can he really be that under the radar?

It is going to be a long off-season for the Institute of Technology......blahhhhhhhh!

Did Calvin leave them on?

Paul Johnson's turning out to be every bit as good a recruiter as we anticipated. GTU fans should be all atwitter at the parade of talent he's stealing out from under the noses of powerhouse schools like Duke, ETSU, Furman, etc.

He does understand he's at Georgia TECH now, not Georgia SOUTHERN, right? Although, to give him credit, HE never lost at home to Furman, did he? So maybe this IS an upgrade for the nerds.

Next year's game in Athens is going to resemble a runaway locomotive hitting a trash bag full of aluminum cans. They may find pieces of Tech's QB (whoever it ends up being. Does Wishbone Danny Myers have any eligibility left?) as far away as Lake Hartwell. I can hardly wait.

I'm not sure Tech could have won the Sun Belt Conference this year.

Florida Atlantic defeated a tough Troy team to win the conference and then pounded Memphis in the New Orleans Bowl.

Troy finished 8-4 and probably deserved a bowl bid more than Tech. I would imagine they would have given Fresno State a better game in the Humanitarian Bowl.

I got a good laugh out of the places Tech had to pull these guys away from.

Man the Nashville Auto Diesel College reference was great. I think they mailed those to everyone.

Maybe Paul Johnson will start looking a little more outside the box to flesh out his recruiting classes. Actually, the players in the WPFL might fit right in at Yech, seeing as how they're already used to playing in front of tens of people as it is...

You guys are being very unfair here and not looking at the bigger picture....what you are not taking into account is that CPJ is having his way with much of the South East in this annual epic struggle for talent....thus far, he has won many a head-2-head recruiting wars with Catawba, Mars Hill, Presbyterian, Tusculum, Lenoir-Rhyne, just to name a few -- so laugh now, pay later!!

y'all are gonna be laughing out the other side of your mouths when the amazin' ramblin' wrecksters beat the dawg mess 0-222! or was that 222-0?

Georgia Tech is building a program that the entire Sun Belt Conference will soon beat in pre-Christmas bowl games west of the Mississippi River or north of Toledo.

Dear Anonymous,
I plan to laugh out of every conceiveable orifice while the Nerds in Pee and Blue end up trotting out the flag girls and boys on special teams.

IF Yech can learn to run the Paul Johnson Option, they'll do much like Georgia Southern did a couple years back. Rush for 300 yards, get a couple of garbage scores, and ultimately bore everyone to death.

At least when Georgia Southern came to town, they brought all the hot, stupid girls with them...Yech just brings legions and legions of guys in leotards and tutus...

Hey you asshats, I played at Nashville A&D and let me tell you we were legit.

Sure we weren't close to D-1, but if you came out to one of our practices with your pasty, soft message board body we would have jacked you up!

We have like a 10 year winning streak against Jon Nave University of Unisex Cosmetology and like a 7 game streak against the Jon Gupton College Undertakers.

Jacket Key,
I'm not sure what I or any other Georgia fan will do if Tech beats us, but its understandable that we don't know since it hasn't happened without ineligible players since before The Gulf War.

S.A.W.B., Adrian Peterson was on that GSU squad that came to Athens. Gtu has nobody in their program as good as Adrian Peterson.

I would go to USAFA before Tech, but then I live in Colorado Springs and think it is a great place...

I am not a Tech or PJ apologist, but according to SMQ's non-scientific study on recruit vs. results, Tech has performed 31 spots ahead of their average recruiting rank (since 2002). So typically, they do more with their talent than most of the Div-1 teams.

Under PJ's system it isn't a matter of getting top offensive talent, it is getting specific offensive talent and trying to get as many top defenders as he can get.

I don't see them breaking our streak, but I don't see them become a Sun Belt team either.

I'm actually hoping that Tech can produce an ACC worthy team in the next 5 years. It will definitely help our SOS in the future minus next year. With all the UGA haters in the media we need the jackets to be real competition, however I think our schedule next year will overcome there current lack of talent.

Oh yeah, you're totally right. Any idiot could beat Tech. Just make sure you fire Mark the Messiah the first time he loses to us.

Phil Smith had an offer from Penn State and West Virginia. Lee Butler runs a 4.30 forty and cares about academics. Tevin Washington had recent offers Arizona State, Louisville, and ALL of the Alabama schools. He was 1st team All State in Alabama. He just didn't go to the Scout Combine or any camps. And our "Tulsa recruit" Marcus Wright played in the Army All-American game and was just named a Parade All-American. Enough said.

Don't let the facts get in the way of your ignorance.

But I'm sure this post will be deleted to not interfere with your slant.

Anon 12:44,

As for my slant....

DUDE - This is a UGA Blog. Of course, it's slanted. If you want to read pro-Tickle Piler stuff, go to the GT Sports Blog.

BTW - Winners write the history books.

Tech is going to have a similar recruiting class to what we have had 4 out of the last 5 years and those classes continually win 7-9 nine games and lose to the dawgs as a result of one or two plays.

Johnson wins everywhere with players that fit his system and has done pretty well for being on the job a month.

Continue to giggle about rankings and stars...

Also, I was expecting a little more solid humour from you guys. Not very creative with your posts.

"expected more humor"

Yeah, Sorry about that.

Making fun of Tech has gotten so old that most of our material has been used up over the past 17 years.

I understand the good natured jabbing between the UGA bloggers and the Techies, with UGA usually on top of the jokes with the 7 or 8year win streak in football, but I don't get the "tickle pile" joke, what is that?!?
Down on Peachtree St in Atlanta, its a club called "Bulldogs" and from what I heard (never been myself) a lot of male bonding and tickle piles and other stuff is going on in there, and they didn't name the club "Yellow Jackets", its called BULLDOGS!!!!
