- 1. We don't play indoors. So why would we practice there.
2. Results indicate that we clearly do not need it for recruiting.
3. The weather simply isn't that bad here. Studies have shown that we'd used it less than 6 times per year.
4. Getting soft practicing in unrealistic conditions.
5. Other athletic department needs vs. the costs discussed. "Mark Richt wants one" is not a good business reason to build one.
Therefore, I think the new proposed $25 million expansion of the Butts-Mehre building is a reasonable investment when taken in the broader context of the Facilities Arm Race gone mad college athletics environment. The AJC describes the expansion:
Plans call for the back, or north, side of the Butts-Mehre building to be built out into a nearly 44,000 square foot expansion that would extend the training room and strength and conditioning areas, and house a 10,800 square-foot multipurpose area. Phase Two would include the construction of football offices, lobbies and display areas on the second floor. So it's not a full bore practice facility, but it'll meet some of those practical needs. The investment reminds me of the Basketball Practice facility investment. Having toured that facility, I can tell you that it's much less about having two gyms for the hoops programs to practice in. It's more about the locker rooms, training spaces and offices that present the program in a first class manner.
The multipurpose area will feature a floor of synthetic grass over which a hard floor could be placed through automation. It will include a full kitchen to host events, team meals and recruiting engagements.
The facility will provide enough room for the football team to run some drills or conduct walk-through practices. However, both Adams and Evans emphasized that the Butts-Mehre expansion does not take the place of Richt's continued requests for an indoor practice facility.
The new Butts-Mehre expansion builds on our legacy investments in those areas for football, and it addresses some immediate practical needs. It also allows for a much more functional and less expensive practice facility to be built in the future.
As far as timing...they are going to have a dedicated fund raising effort for this building. In other words, construction won't start for at least two years. If I'm Damon Evans, I start with the NFL lettermen on this one.
Lastly, the ticket price increase made total sense to me. To quote someone on a message board. If we're getting 90th percentile results on 50 percentile ticket prices, that's a hell of a deal. Agreed.

The new practice facility for the basketball teams is gorgeous. I'd love to check the inside of it out.
1) Didn't then just widen the north side of BM to expand the weight room, etc.?
2) Will this replace one of the 2 upper level practice fields?
Does the ticket price increase go into effectfor the 2008 tickets or 2009? Just curious.
I'm sure I've told this story here before, but it bears repeating- a guy I used to work with was a pretty high-profile recruit from Atlanta who took a trip to visit Bo Schembechler at Michigan. On his visit, Bo took him and a group of recruits from Florida on a tour of their indoor practice facility and went to great lengths describing what a great asset it was in those cold Michigan winters. After signing with Michigan and playing there for four years, my buddy said that tour he took on his recruiting visit was the last time he saw the inside of the indoor practice facility.
We played 8% of our games inside this year and 14% of our games indoor in 2005.
In 2007, we had over 10 practices disrupted/shortened due to weather.
An indoor facility is needed.
I don't understand what the big deal is about the indoor practice facility.
If Mark Richt wants it, then lets give it to him.
I think he's more than earned the right to speak for what's best for his program.
That's why HE IS THE COACH and we aren't.
the new facility for basketball and gymnastics is about as deluxe as anything anybody else in the country could dream of having. You think it looks good on the outside, you honestly should definitley find some time to see it on a more personal level. I just hope it pays off in the recruiting process, maybe convince some of these kids to actually go to college for the experience and for what they can learn versus jumping straight to the NBA. Overall, the new facility, when combined with the right coaching and training, can offer students the same thing that an NBA practice facility can offer.
Cant wait to see the what the new additions to BM will offer!
Total change of subject but did anyone hear that Colquitt (UT) got arrested for his 5th alcohol violation and his 2nd DUI. His punishment take away a scholarship (his fam is loaded btw and that frees up a another scholarship for Phil) and 5 game suspension. Guess who they play on game 6- that's right-US!
The only issue I have with the ticket price increase is that it was announced on next to the last day donations were due.
I would have liked more notice so I could squeeze the budget more.
With all due respect....
If CMR says we need one, I trust his opinion.

25 Million? Texas A&M and the University of New Mexico built full size, 80,000 plus square foot practice facilities for under 10 million. So you are willing to spend 25 million for locker and weight rooms, but not half that much for a full scale indoor facility?
Besides, it's not about practicing in the conditions you will be playing in, it's about not missing crucial practices or not being able to install complete game plans due to adverse conditions. If it is 50 degrees with thunder and lightning on Tuesday, how are those the same conditions as a sunny 65 degree Saturday, which if you've spent any time in Georgia you know can easily happen in the same week.
If all they wanted was a dry, big place to practice, it could be built for well under $10 million
But that's not what Coach Richt has ever described. He described a football palace.
So they are taking all the palace elements and putting them in another building.
