The other shoe

Yes. I saw it.
No. I'm not breaking it.
I'm still hoping for a wacky mix-up.

Well...that was a stupid as hell way for me to handle it. Sorry for being a cryptic ass. That said, I was only a cryptic ass for about 45 minutes. Regardless, it only made it sound worse than it was.

I had been emailed about it with questions, it had been reported on 960am, and it was already on a message board and more importantly on the official Clarke County Jail Report web site...before I wrote anything. It just hadn't been confirmed that the person named in the report was the same as our player. Either way, lesson learned. It was a dumb way to handle it. I acted like a dumb blogger instead of a quasi-responsible guy with a well trafficked fan site.

Regardless, according to the AJC the player is Billy Humphrey. He was arrested this morning. He was pinched at 2:12 am for underage possession of alcohol and failure to "obey traffic control."

This typically comes with a 10 percent of the season suspension. That would mean that Billy could miss the UF (road), SC (home) and UT (home) games. Given Billy's earlier run in this season, the suspension could be worse.

Update: Rather than have this be a complete Billy Humphrey bash session in the comments or the article. I have it on excellent authority that Billy doesn't have class on Tuesdays or Thursdays, and he's not required to attend study halls because of his good academic standing. He's a good student, and he didn't have class on Thurs. So the whole "school night" thing is less of an issue. It probably won't change his punishment, but it may change the perception of the offense by UGA fans.

Update 2: AJC says Billy blew a .03 after getting stopped for what sounds an awful lot like jaywalking. I would blow a .03 if I walked past a liquor store on a windy day. For a kid Billy's size, it's about 1 stiff drink in 1 hour or 2 regular drinks in 2.5 hours. So he wasn't pulling an Ian Smith or anything.

Idiotic, to say the least.

This is probably the most uncool thing I've ever seen on this blog.

Blurg.

This could be the death blow for CDF and the program. After last night, I don't see how we score 50 points in half of our remaining game.

Blurg.

He might get kicked straight out of school...A felony means UGA probation. Alcohol violation means no more UGA if done while on probation.

Once again. Who cares? This team is a mess in more ways then one, and they do not make it easy on anyone to support them. Bring on the G-Day game!

Per the AJC ... "Police charged Humphrey with underage possession and failure to obey a traffic control device."

Sounds like he was busted for jaywalking and the debil juice either on him or in him.

Thanks goodness he wasn't on a scooter!

Somebody just freaking shoot our BBall program and put it out its misery. Gezzzz...get ready to flush the rest of season's games down the drain.

I'm telling ya...we should give Bobby knight a call. He wouldn't Kick Humprey off the team...he'd just beat him with a chair and choke slam him.

PWD - I don't blame you for the earlier version of the post. At this point it would make sense to go ahead and jump to the conclusion that it was Billy that got nicked by the cops, with what all else has gone wrong with the Men's BB program this year.

At this point, the entirety of the UGA Men's basketball program has become a laughingstock. Felton claims to recruit 'character' guys, which is why he cut Wayne Arnold loose from his scholarship. Why, then, did Mike Mercer get a scholly?

Why does it seem that we're getting the same class of knucklehead with every signing class, with perhaps a less-felonious bent to them?

I'm not sure there's a coach out there that could turn this team around in 3 years at this point, mainly because of the climate of losing that exists currently.

PWD,

When dealing with a 20 year old college athlete, restraint is the order of the day. I think waiting was commendable. If UGA continues to use it 1.5 strikes your out policy, Billy will be gone. Maybe Coach Felton should follow him out.

what's funny is there are more arrest on the football team, so your football and basketball programs are becoming laughing stocks! i mean at least the b-ball team waits until the season to start doing these things the football team already has players out for next year!!! what a joke!

Any chance Richt and Garner can start recruiting for basketball? Not for players...a new coach...

Oh, yes, Anon 2:04...

A #2 final ranking, a dominating Sugar Bowl win, and a Top 5 recruiting class are a recipe to become a laughingstock.

Either you never went to college (that would be easy to grasp) or you were extremely boring while you were there. College kids do extremely dumb things A LOT and occasionally get caught. It's not like Richt swept it under the carpet.

The laughing you hear is not at UGA, it's at your post...

anonymous troll go home, you are not welcome here. Failing that, at least have the balls to use your name when you post inflammatory bullshit.

As for basketball.....how long till G-Day?

thanks for the updates PWD. Sounds like the fine men and women of the ACCPD were out in force last night. Granted Billy should have known better, it's not the first time someone jaywalked in Athens after midnight.

You could blow .03 after using Listerine

Times have certainly changed in Athens. Back in the mid 70s, on a Monday morning after a football game, half the student body would probably have been able to blow .03, just from Saturday night. Of course, the drinking age was 18 then, but I dont recall major problems with people getting work done or carnage in the streets. I guess in Mike Adams' nanny state, as well as the People's Republic of ACC, no relatively minor incident is too small to turn into Armageddon.

That said, how dumb do you have to be not to realize what the atmosphere is at UGA and in Athens regarding drinking? A deep breath in a room where someone opened a Bud Light is probably about what it takes to pull an .03 (you're presumed to not be under the influence up to .05, unless you have a CDL (.04) or you're under 21 (.02, which is just shorthand for zero tolerance. You could probably do brain surgery at .02 with no actual motor skill impairment.) Still, if it aint legal and you KNOW all the misery that happens when people get busted, because they get busted every day, and you have fellow athletes and teammates getting busted, come on.

I find myself discouraged. I think Felton's a good coach, but this far into his tenure, all the "problem children" are all his responsibility. He brought them in here; he cant make them behave, and invariably, some kids wont behave no matter who the coach is, but has he got ANYONE that's gone two years without jamming himself up besides Dave Bliss?

UGA basketball is like UNC football. Rarely good, should be excellent, seems to be snakebit.

PWD:

Thanks for putting this incident in perspective. A college kid had a trace amount of alcohol in him several hours after losing a tough game and was jaywalking.

To me it is somewhere along the magnitude of improper parking.

Yet another would have been nothing in the good old days story.

Damn.

Now I wish you hadn't told me.

that's the link to the story on BH in the Red and Black. Note that when Michael Adams was asked about it, that it "drew ire" from him and he thought the basketball program was having way too many issues. that sounds like someone fed up with this nonsense and ready to make a move. at least that's what i hope.
