A Series Lost, But No Ground

It was bound to happen. Georgia hadn't lost an SEC series this year, but Florida took the Saturday and Sunday games from the Dawgs to win this weekend's series 2-1. The Gators got timely hitting, good baserunning, and a slew of double plays to thwart Georgia's offense at every turn. Florida's pitchers didn't really shut the bats down, but it seemed every time the Dawgs were threatening, something would throw cold water on them, a double play, a key strikeout, or a baserunning error. The team just wasn't as sharp as them been during their SEC winning streak. Trevor Holder and Dean Weaver were again solid on the mound. Josh Fields got the save Friday night after getting the team out of an eighth inning jam.

Despite the series loss, nothing changed about the Georgia lead in the SEC standings. It still stands at 3.5 games, the same number as when the weekend begins. The Cocks got swept in Baton Rouge, while Vanderbilt and Ole Miss also lost two this weekend.

The next two series are SEC West leader Ole Miss in Athens and a loaded Vanderbilt team in Nashville. Those two teams are right on Georgia's heels in the standings, so wins would go a long way toward winning the conference. The Dawgs have no midweek games, so they'll have some time to sharpen up before the Rebels come to town.

More than any other team - losing to Florida in any sport, anytime, anyplace is insufferable.

Anybody who was there (including all of the Gator fans I talked to) was completely blown away by Fields on Friday night. I've seen a bunch of him, but I don't think I've ever seen anything like that. He came in during the 8th with 1 out and the bases juiced and struck out both guys he faced. Then he followed that in the 9th by striking out the next three batters. Absolutely sick.

The worst thing about yesterday was that we actually got some decent production from the bottom of our order but the 2-3-4 sports just couldn't get it done when they had opportunities.

Oh, and if we see them again in Hoover it might not be very pretty. Bryce and Cole Figueroa briefly got into it at the plate (which caused both benches to clear) in the 8th, then Cerione said something after he struck out to end the game that caused Florida to avoid the post-series handshake. Beckham wasn't too pleased with Cerione at that point and slung him back into the dugout while screaming at him.

anon 8:27,
Technically, the Dogs went 2-2 against the gators this weekend. 2-1 in baseball and 1-0 in gymnastics... Oh, and did I mention that that last win was for a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!

Is this old news or I am supposed to be surprised and happy?

Andrew,

It had been rumored, but the story only broke today.

As for it being good or bad news. Depends on if you're a UGA or Tech fan. If you're a Dawg, why would you want a talentless clown with no mobility to leave The Flats and the majesty of the triple option?

It's probably good news for Techies. He pretty much stunk at ... well ... stuff.

What are y'all's thoughts on the Dawgs in the draft this past weekend. I would've thought for sure y'all would've given Howard, Brown, and Adams their due...
