O for 2 and Barbeque

The Diamond Dawgs struck a victory for underdogs everywhere yesterday, losing their second straight game at the SEC Baseball Tournament. As the top seed, we just wanted to let the little guys win too. Georgia lost to eighth seed Ole Miss Wednesday and fifth seed Alabama yesterday.

Wednesday's problem was hitting. Ole Miss starter Lance Lynn cut up the Dawgs, striking out 12 to tie his personal best. After Lynn left the game, Ole Miss uber-reliever Scott Bittle came in to finish us off. Nick Montgomery pitched well, but couldn't match Lynn. That game wasn't that bad considering we ran into a Lynn at his best. Montgomery's solid performance at least calms starter depth concerns after Trevor Holder's shoulder scare.

Yesterday's game was a replay. Stephen Dodson gave up three runs and looked good. But, the hitters couldn't figure out Austin Hyatt, scrapping out two runs on four hits. Hyatt's a good pitcher, but not good enough to just throw your hands up and say "no wonder we didn't hit." He sat down 20 Georgia hitters in a row. Yeah, I know Poythress and Cerione were hurt, but that doesn't explain 20 straight outs. From now on we're probably going to see pitchers of Hyatt's quality or better. The Dawgs have to generate more offense. The pitchers aren't going to throw shut outs. We have to score more than four to win.

With all that said, I wouldn't freak out too bad. Our last three trips to Omaha were turned in by teams that went a collective 5-6 in Hoover. We didn't go too deep into the bullpen, so we can rest some of those weary arms. The big negative is that a national seed for the upcoming NCAA tournament is quickly fading away. Going 2-4 in the last two weeks hurts bad for seeding.

The team can cry all over the SEC regular season championship trophy on the way home from Hoover.

I went out to the game on Wednesday night with some coworkers and their children. I hadn't had an opportunity to see the Dawgs play in person since I graduated in 2006. I would go religiously while I was in school. So needless to say I was excited to be able to see them in person since they did not make the tournament last year.

It was nice getting to see them hoist the SEC Championship trophy before the game. Then the game started. After watching them several times this year on TV I just knew they had to explode one inning and score some runs, but that inning never came. It was very disappointing. It reminded me of the first series with Arizona and I would be following the game tracker on my computer. It was great getting to see them in person, but I felt like there were so many strike outs that we took looking. It was frustrating that no one was swinging the bat. Peisel hit well and Beckham had a tremendous play at short. Also, the third base umpire is actually blind since he called that home run fair.

That is just my two cents from a Dawg fan here in Birmingham who went out to the game.

On a side note. The game was delayed for an hour and a half so it did not start until 6:30. That's not bad for me, but for the teams who are scheduled to play at 8 and do not end up playing until almost 11 is a problem.

Wouldn't it be ironic if LSU ended up getting the national seed even though UGA is the SEC champs? That would be quite a reversal from football now wouldn't it?

well if LSU wins the SEC tournament then they would be SEC Champs because no one gives a shit who wins the regular season championship and seeing as how the dawgs were eliminated yesterday they can go ahead and stop calling themselves SEC champs because everyone knows the real champion is the one who wins the tournament

If that rationalization helps you forget that LSU was 0-2-1 against the Dawgs this season -- in their own house -- then you're more than welcome to it, anonymous.
