If you are heading to Baton Rouge this weekend, you will be introduced (or reintroduced) to the chant "Tiger Bait!" This is what groups of LSU fans incessantly chant at their visitors. It is designed to chastise and intimidate their opponents, similar to "Gator Bait!" in Jacksonville. It's usually harmless, but can be unnerving when chanted about a foot from your face by tens of drunk Cajuns.
The problem is that, if you think about it, the chant makes no sense. Bait, after all, is something used to lure a hunted animal with. I understand that the bait dies in the end, but so does the animal, right? So, I guess the point is that we will die first, but immediately before they do? It seems silly to me, but the LSU fans have been at it for years.
With that said, I caution you: Do not confront LSU fan with logic. Explaining this bait concept to them, even though every one of them understands it (a few even rely on it to eat), is not a wise practice. Most LSU fans are mildly to egregiously hospitable, albeit initially volitile and hostile. Other LSU fans, however, would like to gut you like a giant catfish or crush your windpipe with a wooden pirogue paddle if you wear any color other than purple and gold. What is so frightening about Baton Rouge is that it is impossible to tell a good LSU fan from a potentially deadly one. Enjoy your trip!

i went to LSU Georgia in 2004 when Gameday was there.. LSU fans are the best people I have ever met at a game... GO DAWGS

Correctamundo Anon 1229 - when down, no fanbase shuts their mouths faster than LSU. Just like with any verbal bully, punch them in the mouth and watch them cry.
Should we win the toss, I hope we take the ball and draw first blood. Which is what I wish we had done against Bama.

I have found a method of retaliation for the mass of "tiger bait" taunts that is equally devoid of logic.
The year was 1998, (you remember...Quincy's first game against 6th ranked LSU in which he looked superhuman in leading the dawgs to a 29-28 victory). Anyway, before the game I was hounded by throngs of LSU students yelling the taunt in my direction. I simply replied with the same ferocity and cadence:
"MASTUR-BATE, MASTUR-BATE, MASTUR-BATE!"
Somewhat dumbfounded, they left me alone.
"Louisiana" and "logic". Those words don't collide the same sentence very often.
I cant wait to get down there. I feel at home when surrounded by their kind.
We are going to house the tigers. Go Dawgs!
I made this same argument in The Red & Black, circa 1998. Never understood the whole "bait" taunt.
"Ok, yes, I will be happy to lure you to your death."
The "Tiger Bait" taunt is just as illogical as Tiger Rag. "Hold that tiger?" Yes, thanks. We plan to.
as far as "tiger bait", if you assume that bait is only used to lure an animal out to kill them, then yes its a dumb chant. but bait can be used just to lure something out so you can watch it.
zoos will put food in the front or middle of the cages so that the animals will have to come into the open to feed, and then everyone can see it.
so thats how i see it, we throw whoever elses fans out and scream tigerbait at them, meaning we are using you to see out tigers come and devour you and have a good time.
but all in all its good jest. tip from an avid tigerbaiter: take it and have fun with it, then eat some of our food. its more fun that way

LSU fans are just plain tacky! When my dad and brother (both Lousisana Tech alum) went to Baton Rouge a couple of years ago, La Tech was beaten pretty badly. Yet still the LSU fans were pouring beer from the upper deck down onto the La Tech fans. I mean REALLY!?! We SEC fans are some of the most passionate in NCAA sports and talk alot of smack (in fun), but LSU is over the top. Be careful DAWGS -- just beat 'em on the field!! Glory, glory to ol' Georgia!!
On a similar note, I miss the old school "Dog Food" chant from the UGA fan's in the 70's.
Yeah, whatever happened to the "Dawg Food" chant? They used to throw it up on the Jumbotron in Sanford too. It was used past the '70s. I remember it in the '80s and even the '90s too I think.

I always kinda liked the LSU fan base. Lots of FU,s followed by rounds of shots and great food being offered. If you don't over react to the initial taunting they are really fun folks to tailgate with.
EXACTLY!! I've been saying the same thing for years. Tiger Bait, Gator Bait, whatever! It makes no sense at all!! I have never been able to understand why they yell that cheer.
We'll do our talking on the field.
Point at the LSU Fans (like we did in Atlanta) and holler:
"DAWG FOOD!"
They will understand.
They are just as obnoxious as any foul mouth, drunk UGA fan that barks, and spits might I add, in the face of any fan that does not wear red and black. Not to mention, even if those opposing fans are elderly or young kids. I speak from experience!
