Auburn and Rodney Garner

The AU search will take a lot of twists and turns before it's over. Today, Rodney Garner mentioned that he'd like to be a candidate. This shouldn't really be a shocker to anyone. Garner has said his #1 goal as a coach is to one day be the head football coach at Auburn University.

However, that doesn't mean he'd take a lateral move to the Tigers if someone else is selected for that position. He's also not very high on the search list right now as it seems that Leach, Muschamp, Derek Dooley and others are above him in the pecking order.

I don't see Garner's comments hurting us with any recruits right now. Some other schools will try and position it negatively, but Coach Garner is more than talented enough to deflect any of those concerns from kids and their families.

The Mobile Press Registers lists these guys as candidates:
The list of potential candidates to replace Tuberville includes a mixture of mindsets and philosophies. Among those known for offense are Leach, Boise State's Chris Petersen, Tulsa's Todd Graham, Florida State offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher, Air Force's Troy Calhoun and Georgia Tech's Paul Johnson, whose spread-option running game is reportedly a favorite of former Auburn coaching great Pat Dye.

Possible candidates with defensive backgrounds include North Carolina's Butch Davis, Texas defensive coordinator and former Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, Cincinnati's Brian Kelly, Wake For est's Jim Grobe and TCU's Gary Patterson, whose Horned Frogs are ranked No. 2 in the country in total defense.
As for the Mike Leach rumors, Texas Tech appears close to offering Leach a contract worth $3 million per year or more.

If you're an Auburn fan, why are you in such a tizzy over the idea of hiring Leach? He was out coached by Mike Shula in the 2006 Cotton Bowl. Remind me again...when did Shula out coach Tuberville? Regardless, Graham Harrell thinks that Leach is growing restless in Lubbock.

I found it interesting that Rivals listed Derek Dooley (yes that Dooley) as a possibility.

Good for CRG. I think it is natural and expected for him to be interested in that opening.

As to AU's other candidates, I think the reality of Tubby leaving is hitting them and understanding that there may not be an immediate alternative out there.

Go Dawgs!!

AU fired a guy who is hands down better than any candidate they mention.

The bigger concern is if he were to leave for the Defensive Coordinator position.

You have to love the irony that 2 of the candidates that are named (which both are now "head-coaches-to-be") were part of Auburn's coordinating carousel under Tubb's watch.

Garner would never take a lateral move to coach there. If he did, he would be part of the next AU housecleaning.

Who ever takes the AU job is probably going to be part of the next house cleaning. Their program is in a slide where it would take a Saban like coach to rescue and there are not many coaches like that out their.

Sites are starting to say, auburn is close to a deal with Leach. It should be announced soon.

Tubberville for DC
Tubberville for DC
Tubberville for DC
: )

Seriously... the guy loves defense. And seems to share alot of values with Richt.

Why does the media refer to Paul Johnson's offense as "the spread option?"

Up until recently, the media labeled every offense that lined up in the shotgun with 3 or more receivers as the "spread offense," whether they were WVU, OU, TX, or Texas Tech.

Now, I guess if you line up with a QB under center, 1 RB, 2 wingbacks, and 2 WRs and run some option, then you're a "spread offense" too.

Anon 11:57- going from a line coach & recruiting coordinator to DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR is not a lateral move.

That is the biggest risk here - that he would leave to be DC.

Derek Dooley has a pretty good looking resume and will make someone a great coach one day soon.

Hope they are enjoying their one win a decade. I guess it's kind of like us with UF last year though....

It appears that Houston Nutt is the top guy on Auburn's wish list. I think if Auburn makes that hire, you don't have to worry too much about CRG going to Auburn.

In other news, rumors are swirling about Chris Peterson going to Mississippi State. If that's the case, then the Bizzaro Dawgs have made an excellent, EXCELLENT hire.

Book it. Petersen is in, expect the announcement after the SEC title game. Great hire.

I cannot see Chris Peterson going to Mississippi State. He will keep winning at Boise and have a chance to go to a school with a real chance. I cannot quite understand why UW has not been interested.

I cannot see Leach at Auburn. Not sure why. Just intuition.

Would godawg please post Derek Dooley's resume? I am sorry, but I have not followed it and think he would be howled at by the Auburn folks. If you fire or let Tubs resign, you had better come up with a "name" coach and I cannot see the name "Dooley" satisfying the fans.

Just glad to know I'm pissing somebody off.

Any chance Auburn would take Dennis Felton as their coach....

Please.

totally off topic, but damn is anyone as sick of florida as i am?

ERK, I am as sick as Florida as you are.

I am also sick of our basketball team sucking out loud.
Anyone see the score of the Illinois game? 76-42!!! 27 turnovers for us.

No, that wasn't the women's team, though I think our women's team would beat the me.

these UGA players better be watching this garbage...

rbubp...i understand your frustration with the basketball team, ill pull for any sport at georgia to win, but we are a football first school just like Dooley said, we HAVE to win in football, anything less than undefeated IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH! am i the only one who gets that?
