Finebaum calls Auburn AD "a buffoon"

Paul Finebaum is clearly enjoying the hell out of the Auburn coaching search. Always a man known for working in subtle nuance and hidden word play, Finebaum dropped the following on his readers yesterday:
If Jay Jacobs hasn't secured the No. 1 spot among the biggest buffoons in college athletics, it's only because a new poll hasn't been taken since the announcement of Tuberville's firing.

The first week of the search looks like the early auditions for "American Idol" with candidates running through the door in droves, falling over themselves and playing the fool.
Not sure if you caught all that sub-text, but he doesn't seem impressed. The Auburn search rolls on with no apparent strategy or end game in mind. The single most qualified, available coach in America is the one they just fired. Tough to search around that problem.

One of the things I find interesting about the AU search is that the candidates are all relatively unproven.

Todd Graham has been successful in non-BCS conferences. Do you really turn over the reigns of the program to him considering the coaches in the SEC?

Dooley? Come on. He has less success than Graham.

Gill? Okay, hard to argue with a guy who took Buffalo to a conference title. By far the best resume of the group.

Hoke? Maybe Auburn should hire the Ball State AD who kept Hoke. Again one really good year, but lost the title game to the above mentioned Gill.

Garner? Never been a coordinator. Ray Goff 2? Has recruiting ever really been Auburn's issue? They seem to get good players (except maybe at QB). I suspect he is getting a look because he is black. Seriously, who else would consider him for a HC job?

I can't figure out why no one ever wants to interview Willie Martinez.

Kinda unrelated, but Dan Mullen is headed to MS State. Not sure what I think of that one yet.

First, I know it's fun to poke the Aubies. I do it, you do it, we all enjoy it. The apparent turmoil can't but help Georgia (and Bama).

But, I don't think they're interviewing the wrong people. Todd Graham, while a total douchebag, won in a year at Rice. Rice. That's not easy to do if you are familiar with the administration's approach to football. Not long before TG went there, Rice admin seriously considered dropping to Div 2 (not I-AA, Div II) in football. (The report they wrote is online). He shows up and they win. How he left, however, is very Pertino-y.

I just can't see Gill at AU. I think he's going to make a great top-tier coach at some point, but I just don't see AU as that place for him. But what do I know?

Dooley should sit tight another year or two and shoot for UVA.

Methinks Garner (G-A-R-N-E-R) is a token interview. Good news to me is that if he interviewed for HC, it seems less likely he'd take something less than that at AU now and is more likely to be with us in the foreseeable future.

Lastly, let's not all forget that it wasn't so long ago (ages, however, in SEC years) that we hired a long-time assistant from one of the 90's most successful programs who brought no HC experience, questions about his toughness, and who a week after being hired had his offense shut out in the MNC game... it's worked out pretty well for us all things considered. All. Things. Considered.

So, I guess the Chris Peterson to MSU LOCK wasn't so lock.

Wow Gen Stoop - thanks for reminding me that we once thought Richt had toughness. Love the guy and glad he's our coach, but I'd put toughness at the bottom of the list of his attributes.
