Richt confirms that Auburn is talking with Searels

That Auburn would talk to Searels was inevitable. The AJC and David Hale both confirmed that they are talking. Barring Pat Dye Chizik offering Searels a coordinator position, I just can't see why he'd leave...now. If it were a more stable situation over there, I could see going home.

But walking into that snake pit at this moment in history?

Richt should be able to match almost any quasi-rational offer they make him unless they give him the Offensive Coordinator job. For my money, Stacy Searels is the best assistant coach in Athens since Erk left. That includes Wayne McDuffie, Brian Van Gorder and Marion Campbell. Ok, that last one was a joke.

Chad Simmons of Scout.com reports that Coach Searels and Coach Ball are scheduled to be in Bobbie Massie's home tonight. I expect the Searels situation to sort itself out pretty quickly one way or the other.

Oh. God. No. I agree that Searles is the best Assistant coach we've had in a very, very long time. Although, can you take a coordinator position and not talk to the media? I hope we do whatever it takes to get him. If we don't, then whoever Richt goes after to work with this young O-Line is THE STORY of the offseason to me.

Art Kehoe on line 1.

Let's remember folks that "Home" is in Georgia. CSS came "home" to UGS not only to coach but to be close to his parents & his wife's parents - they are both from the state of Georgia & family is near Athens, not Auburn. He also has an ailing parent. His wife works with the athletes at UGA as well. And they have 2 little girls in school, close to grandparents, who love it here.

It would have to be one hell of an offer & a big promotion to tear him away from family & roots, imo. Plus, why would Auburn offer the moon to Searles, a line coach, for the OC job when he hasn't called plays a day in his life?

I'd bet the farm he won't leave for a lateral move, no matter the money - especially because we can match & better what they're offering. And I have a hard time believing he'll leave "home" for an OC job at an unstable program.

Remember, at one time he claimed he played for Auburn only because he "didn't know any better."

Lets hope he just Furcals Damon into giving him a raise.

JUST KIDDING!!!

I agree about the amazing job that Searels did this year. What was it, three lineman on the all-SEC freshman team? I would hate not just for him to leave but to see him coaching against us again.

Auburn would be crazy not to talk to Searels' and at gauge his interest.

Isn't this part of Auburn's problem with Tubbs? Building another staff from the bottom up... Wsn't that how the OleMiss mafia did it on the plains. Expendable coordinators and long term position coaches...

But hey, if they will hire Chizik as headcoach then why not hire Searles as OC.

Sure do wish Auburn was in the Eastern DIvision.

Mike,

Seriously? We play Auburn every year...

WOE IS ME!

WE'RE LOSING OUR ONLY GOOD COACH!

WILL WE BLOCK AGAINST MSU?!

LOOK AT THE ASHES FALLING FROM THE SKY!

(I'm catchin' hell over on EDSBS for questioning T. Cody's All-American-ess.)

Forsake us not, Oh Hog Whisperer.

This one is like Garner. Pay him coordinator money plus, whether he coordinates anything other than his position or not. And if the other coaches complain, the justification is clear: CSS drinks your milkshake.

LMAO - that is the best comment I have read in the past 6 months....CSS drinks your milkshake.

Given the current state of our beloved football progam, I do not see it as a lock the Coach Searels stays in Athens. The players that will be departing for the NFL this season are leaving a huge talent void behind. Why do we look so much better than Auburn as far a talent is concerned?

I know! Lets get Hugh Nall.

Searels might be the best coach on the team in the last 30 years.

I want to rename the team Searels.

I'd like to even know what he looks like, but he's practically Mark Felt the way he avoids the media light. There's barely even jack on him on wikipedia.

really? do you even know how to use toilet paper?

yeah, if auburn will make chizik head coach, there's no reason to believe that they won't offer searls the oc position--reason has very little to do with what happens at auburn these days.

can a career ol coach turn down what would surely be a rare opportunity to jump to oc? even in the condition auburn's in?

Baltimore,

I would say "yes" that a career coach can turn down the opportunity to a coordinator if the fit is not right or if the coach is self-aware enough to know he is not ready for that jump.

Let's look at Bobo. He was a position coach (not to mention the son of a coach) for several years and my guess is that the consensus is that he still has growing to do. Richt felt confident enough to make him the OC, but maybe he was promoted too fast. With Richt around however Bobo has someone to go to. Searels would have no one to go to since Chizik is a defense guy.

How terrible is Dennis Felton?

He is an embarrassment. Time to go. Don't let him finish the season.

Say what you like, but the Felton teams of the past would've lost that game. Its possible that he could be turning it around. Not likely, but possible.

Anon 11:50,

While we will lose some talented players, none of them will be on the OL. After turning Fresh, RS-Fresh and Soph into legitimate players, he has the ability to coach the best unit on the offense next year and with depth even.

PS: To Anon. 12/19 3:46 What the heck is UGS? Does UGay want to now be called University of Georgia Southern!

Anon 7:52:

Well, I would say that "UGS" is a slight of typing resulting from the 'A' and 'S' being beside each other on the standard American keyboard. However, since UFags keyboards only have the letters 'J', ‘O’, ‘R’, ‘T’, and ‘S’; I would not expect you – or your colleagues to comprehend.

And by the way, UFags changing your name to UWTDTGAAT? That’s The University of it Will Take a Decade to Tie Georgia All-Time….

UGAfanINclemson said...

Back to the point…. If Coach all mighty exalted Richt wishes for Searels to stay, it shall come to pass. UGA has more money, more consistent excellence in recruiting, and a better rated school overall; what reason would Searels have to leave? Especially when Auburn showed how temporary the OC position was on their team this year? Auburn has a much better chance of snagging Steve Spurrier, Jr than Searels.

Look Auburn is Searels Alma Mater. His old coach Pat Dye is asking for him to come home. It wouldn't be a complete shock for him to go.

Would any of you take a small pay cut doing what you're doing (you'll have to use your imagination)
to work for the Georgia Football team? I

Alma mater means a lot.

As for looking at how Auburn treated the past coordinators (there has been a lot of churning amongst OC and DC under Tuberville), that might change under Chizik.

Did Searels play while Chizik was coaching at Auburn?

Crane said...

Searels Played for Pat Dye in the middle late 80's.

Chizik has embraced Pat Dye's support. Given the state of the Auburn Program. I think Searles is the best chance at making a 'splash' hire for the assistant coaches. It's pretty sketchy when you're trying to make a splash with an O-Line coach.
