How Not to Handle Your Employees 101

Boston College's AD has completely lost his mind. According to ESPN, he has promised / threatened head coach Jeff Jagodzinski with termination if he interviews with the NY Jets. Jagodzinski appears to be moving forward with the interview.

The threat appears to be very real, and the Boston Herald say that it looks like Jagodzinski is likely out regardless of what happens next due to the over the top nature of the ultimatum. Coach Jags is 20-8 in two seasons with Boston College, and his team played in the ACC title game the past two years.

It's especially bizarre given that he was a long shot for landing the Jets job anyway. In other words, he has coached their program to its highest heights, and now may be terminated in a gigantic pissing contest gone awry.

As EagleinAtlanta points out, this could've been spun as a win for BC.
this should have been a good thing. If he gets the job, congrats, thanks for two great seasons. Gene could go find the next Jags. If he doesn't get the job, he and Gene have a big public show of him "staying at BC." You then show to the college football world and recruits that the BC coach is hot and has NFL connections.
All of this and the Jets aren't even a competitor of the Eagles. When your top employees interview at other gigs it's not like marital infidelity. You can manage through it with a positive outcome.

How this relates to UGA? The path to success continues to get easier for our rivals on North Avenue. Also, it's interesting to see how any program can be potentially mangled via bad personnel decisions.

I'd be very surprised if two pink slips don't emerge out of this mess.

They just didn't want him to be able to hold the department hostage for more money despite what his contract reads.

I was surprised by the reaction of two BC contacts I have. They both fully support DeFilippo in this. One said that BC took a chance on Jagodzinski as a young coach and that he has a loyalty clause in his contract for a reason.

They both think Steve Logan would readily take the job and be a solid replacement with no major staff departures or recruiting losses.

If they are indicative of other BC fans, DeFilippo must be acting from a position of strength on this.

INTEROFFICE MEMO
TO: ALL
FROM: HMFIC
RE: EMPLOYMENT

All:
We pay you to (insert job tasks) at (insert employer). This is called employment. If we didn't pay you, you wouldn't be here. If you intimate that you are leaving, we cannot stop you. If we want to keep you here, we'll make it more attractive than other places. If you leave, we'll assume that another place was more attractive (and that you stole office supplies). If you are interested in working for free, please see Tammy in HR.

I took this much differently.

I think BC realizes that they've got a head coach with a head on a swivel, and instead of getting jerked around this year (or every year), they're drawing a line in the sand. It's risky, but it's not like BC would have a hard time attracting another good coach.

It also tells me that BC wasn't committed to Jags long-term anyway, and this is a great opportunity to make him the bad guy in this situation. If they thought he was a long-term must-keep college coach, they'd have handled this MUCH differently. It's bizarre and bold, it might backfire on them, but I like it.

I think its great. Its about time a school held a coach to his commitment.

It will be looked at by the next non-internal hire, that's for sure. Kiss your national coaching search goodbye.

Can we say INTEGRITY. He had it in his contract that he would not talk with the NFL for three years then denied this Jets contact with the president of the University. FIRE him on the spot!!!!!

I am on the side of the AD on this one. While I say there is no harm in a person looking at other opportunities, if he signed a contract that said no interviews in the until after 3 years, then stick to it.

I bet if BC wanted to fight it they could, but the expense and protracted legal battle might not be worth it.

Anyway, if they fire him and he gets another job, they do not have to pay him so they might not be out anything.
