something needs to be done. we cannot continue to be a NONfactor in hoops. it's a disgrace. a bona fide disgrace. my only thought is why doesn't paul hewitt receive the criticism felton has? look at tech since their final four run, hell, look at them now. georgia basketball deserves to be ridiculed. the times tech should be ridiculed they get a free pass. atlanta will never be a uga town, whether tech shines or sinks.
Good read. I've moved on too from the Harrick mess. I'll admit it took me too long to do so. Felton seemed to be a good change after the Tony Cole sweethearts laid the program in waste. But it is clear this program is in atrophy.
I'll be cheering for the (Georgia) Dawgs tomorrow night, but if they lose and its a catalyst to change...

It drives me nuts to see Virginia Tech beat Wake Forest, knowing that our one decent win on the year is useless after Loyola, Corpus Christi and what is looking like could be a winless SEC season.
As I told you Paul, I'm surprised it didn't happen this week with no game for 6 days. It's no longer a matter of if, only when.
If Baylor can come back, we can too.
I was thinking the other day about the 2006-07 season, when we had Gaines, Stukes, Takais Brown, Humphrey, Woodbury, and Mercer (until February, IIRC). How did Felton not get that team into the NCAAs??

If Felton had played point guard for the Dawgs in 1976 I would say this is identical to the Ray Goff era. But that would be too kind to Felton at this point. I really like Coach Felton, but enough is enough. IF he is not going to put up with bad character guys then he shouldn't have recruited them.
Sam Mitchell, NBA Coach of the year, has publicly expressed interest in the job. I hope AD Evans is reaching out through back channels to see if there is any viability to him coming in (financially).
We are really in a no risk situation, we cannot do any worse unless the league expands.
It sounds like Damon was working on getting a new coach instead of attending the Obama coronation.
We need to go after one of these five: Felton Jeff Capel III, Scott Drew, Jaime Dixon, Sean Miller, and Mike Anderson. Failing getting one of those gentlemen to come, we should call Brad Stevens and then Anthony Grant.
Sam Mitchell is not a viable candidate.

A change is needed and I hope that a loss to MSU isn't the only thing that needs to happen to get that change. I'm going to the game tomorrow as always, and I will root for those kids as loud as I can. I'm a little torn, because deep down there is a little voice hoping that we lose so that change will come sooner and we can get this debactle over with. And the fact that I might be hoping that we lose the game depresses me even more. This has been the most frustrating season so far. Even when Yada and Bliss were freshman at least they tried hard.
I really like Felton - he is a nice guy. However, so was Ray Goff. It is time for a change. I believe Felton works hard and wants Georgia to win as much as anybody - he just can't get it done.

The issue I see with firing him midseason is that one of the assistants then takes over. If that coach does "well" then the pressure from the players will be to keep the coach; the players will almost always want the assistant since he is the one who recruited the athlete and the coach that the athletes know.
Promoting an assistant is not always the best course (see Ron Jirsa). In a situation where there has not been success, hiring an assistant from that program is a bad idea. (Different if the coach leaves a successful program--maybe).
skidawg, I agree to a point, which is why I believe the interim HAS to be Hermann. No one believes for a second that we would make a 60something white guy our coach.
Speaking of old guys.....has anyone suggested Tevester Anderson for the short list?
dawgnotdog: What don't you like about Brad Stevens? His career winning percentage is better than .900 through one and half seasons. He hasn't missed a beat this year with a roster dominated by freshman and sophomores. You want to bring Tevester Anderson out of retirement, but you are a no on the young guy that doesn't hardly lose. Interesting.
Tevester was strictly a joke....albeit a bad one.
As for Stevens....I want someone from a "BCS" conference, which in basketball includes the Atlantic 10.
I phrased that poorly. I like Stevens, but want someone who has proven it on a bigger stage.
Dream all you want but we are not getting Capel III. Oklahoma is a superior job to ours in a better conference. Why would he leave?
Ditto for Jaime Dixon. Mike Anderson might be available if we offer a lot of $$$ but again the conference is better and b-ball is way more prominent at Mizzou than here.
Sean Miller and Scott Drew might come here but Damon probably will need to sell them hard.
Let us not discount the fact that the conference is TERRIBLE right now. With no real tradition at our school and a terrible reputation for the conference, Damon is going to need to sell hard.
Please don't forget about the terrible facilities and terrible fan support!!!
Falcons had terrible fan support too, until they started winning and being at minimum competitive on a weekly basis, which is really all I ask.
I fear that my fondest memory of UGA basketball will always be the same game Jeremy Schapp ruined.

Fan support was fine in the times when the team was good.
Facilities and conference weakness are bigger issues, though the conference could be seen as opportunity.
Something's gotta happen...it's freaking stupid that UGA consistently excels at every other sport, but our basketball team is perpetually horrible.
UGA hasn't always been HORRIBLE.
In 1972 Durham became head coach at the University of Georgia. In 1980-81 he was the Southeastern Conference coach of the year, taking the Bulldogs to the NIT then and also the following year. In 1982-83 Georgia won the Southeastern Conference tournament and went to the NCAA Final Four, finishing third nationally. Georgia returned to the NIT the following year, then the year after that (1984-85) finished 21-8 (.710) with an NCAA tournament bid. In 1986-87 Durham was the SEC coach of the year again, a feat he repeated in 1989-90 when he led Georgia to the Southeastern Conference title outright and another NCAA tournament bid. Durham finished his seventeenth and final season at Georgia in 1995, leaving the school with an overall record of 297-215 (.580) and five NCAA tournament bids. His 297 wins are the highest for any coach in Georgia history.
Wow, I'm surprised by Damon's "No more excuses" and "wait and see" comments. I mean, that is basically saying "Yeah, he's gone, but I just can't say it out loud yet."
Sounds like Damon is fed up like the rest of us.
When you miss on all 12 of the state's best prospects, how can you continue to make an upward trajectory argument?
The facts are inescapable. I wish Felton luck but it will be somewhere else.

Sad as it is, McPhee was our only quality player today. Only guy who gave consistent effort. Good shooter.
We are still the stupidest basketball team I have ever watched. Absolutely the most boneheaded plays I have ever seen.
Stupidity is the only thing we do consistently.
Well, I got to watch my first UGA bball game of the season (I live in the midwest) and have not laughed so much since Step-Brothers. What an embarrassment--my favorite part was when Prince got a rebound and stood there holding the ball above his head for 5 seconds--like he had no idea how to pass and/or dribble. I felt like I was watching a high school team whose social studies teacher was coaching. Seriously.
Amazing tht Prince got a rebound considering he's about 5'2".

Someone is staking our basketball history on Hugh Durham.
Even though Durham is probably the most successful coach we have had - our team still sucked. He had better success in recruiting in the late 70's and early 80's as this when almost all of our McDonald's All-Americans matriculated.
But honestly, he won the conference title - 1 time. He won the SEC tourney - 1 time. They underachieved in NCAA tourney except for the Final Four run.
I also think we were a target of NCAA investigators a couple of times.
Those are some fond memories.
