UGA vs. GT Hoops Game Tonight

Ideally, the Georgia Bulldogs would receive their SEC Tournament Championship Rings at half-court before tonight's game against the Yellow Jackets in Alexander Memorial Coliseum.

It seems reasonable that a return to the site of one of our greatest hoops moments would include a nice ceremony. Maybe they'll hang a banner for us. We've certainly won championships on that floor than Georgia Tech has over the past 10-15 years.

Neither team is good right now
, and both coaches desperately need a win tonight to keep the natives from getting truly restless.

There are still tickets available to the game, and they start at $30. They are available via RamblingWreck.com. Tickets are also available via Georgiadogs.com for Saturday's game against Tennessee.

Seeing as uga won the only championship ever held on that court, you could make the argument that yes, uga has won more championships than any other team on that court over the course of its entire history.

But then if reason were to kick in, which it probably won't, you would make the argument that winning the SEC championship once in the last 10 years in a fluke tournament with few spectators pales in comparison to going to the ncaa finals. Since you have never made it to the finals I wouldn't expect you to understand.

And I guess if you are going back 15 years, you would also reach the end of Tech's streak of 9 straight NCAA appearances - 1 more than UGA ever had (that is, subtracting the two that were vacated by the NCAA). In fact, Tech has made it to the Sweet Sixteen (7) almost as many times as uga has danced.

Although I give you credit, by somehow fluking into the SEC conference championship last year you finally won more SEC conference tournament wins (2) than Tech has SEC titles (1).

On a serious note, when you are a top notch program like uga, with your three conference championships, you have reason to celebrate year in and year out. Cheers!!

Know what's sad, after reading the above rant? Felton has a winning record against Tech. Hee hee.

Bernie said...

Anonymous 9:24, you speak of reason. Did your Athletic Office use reason when they gave out rings to its football team for a regular season victory? And we here in Dawgville thought the North Avenue Trade School was a basketball school...

Truth is you're bugs. Nothing but an insect worried about the next "swatter" in life.

Cheers indeed.

Not only that, Georgia Tech certainly has lots of appearances in various post-season tournaments. Actual wins in anything, though? Zero.

Zero.

Georgia Tech has 5 conference titles in its history, NONE of them in the ACC, of course, so they are all pre-1980.

There is nothing more enjoyable than beating GT in anything from football to ultimate frisbee. Regardless of my opinion of Felton or the state of the UGA program, even considering wanting GT to win is ludicrous. If this one win sways Favors and saves Felton his job, the win would be worth it just to beat GT.

Sic 'em Dawgs!

Since we are not counting vacated games I would like to congratulate tech for beating Georgia this year for the first time since 1990. I am not counting the O'Leary illegal players.

the tri guy said...

When is the last time Tech has been consistently better than UGA in ANY sport. Come on Techies, I want the sport and the years...and don't dare bring up the O'Leary bought years of 98-00. The NCAA doesn't count those and neither do I.

it amazes me why felton wants to be here . . .our basketball is an abortion. hewitt gets a free pass in this town for 1 final four and 8 years of yawn, but felton's hands are tied in athens. the best chance we had was tubby, god i miss him.

Funny that a Nerd would come on our blog and talk trash about basketball when we have a winning record against THEM in the Felton/Hewitt matchup years. And they profess to be a basketball school. My bet is they don't even have a winning record in their conference this year. Hewitt can't carry Feltons jock in coaching. Unfortunately Felton can't carry Hewitts jock in recruiting.

Anonymous said...

But, but, players at Tech are SO smart and everything, and Tech grads make so much money, and...zzzzzz.

Anonymous said...

@the tri guy - GT has been consistently "better" than UGa in hoops for the better part of the past quarter century.

That being said - both programs are in total shambles right now. Tonight's game could be the worst game in the history of the series.

Anonymous said...

The Nerdies make so much money they can't even pony up enough to have all the things they want to put in a new practice gym. They must spend it on rings.

1) Your games were vacated by the NCAA. Tech's under O'Leary were not. You can pretend those football games didn't happen, but the NCAA (i.e. the only determination that matters) says they did.

2) "Georgia Tech has 5 conference titles in its history, NONE of them in the ACC, of course, so they are all pre-1980."

Maybe you should check your facts before making stuff up, er posting.

3) Why are y'all so upset about the rings? I guess it's cause all the football players are walking around with backwards 45-42 bruises on their faces from where they got punched in the mouth. Better than those hand prints you leave on your wives though.

4) Tech was/is consistently better than UGA in:

Basketball, 1984 to present. 2 Final fours and one finals to your 0. I don't care about the head to head record (it's just something lame you puppies can hang your hat on). I'm talking overall results.

Baseball from 1991-present (NCAA tourney every year but once, CWS 3 times). During that span UGA has a significantly lower win % and, although making the CWS more times (4 to 3), has only made the NCAA tourney 6 times (compared to 16 times by Tech).

Track - Since inception. GT has had more individual NCAA championships abd Olympic Gold medals by far, including several at the last Olympic games.

Women's Tennis - 2007-08. National Team Champs and National Indoor Champs. Maybe 2 years isn't consistency, but its nice winning a NATIONAL champsionship at your rival's home court (as opposed to an SEC championship that nobody watches).

After reading through the posts, I stand by my assertion. There is nothing better than beating GT in anything, especially considering someone is actually arguing that the GT's women's tennis team is better than UGA's. Really? Maybe? But really? Digging deep there.

the tri guy said...

So.....you don't care about head-to-head in basketball where UGA has gotten the better of Tech, but you don't care about recent history in baseball where we just made the finals of the CWS and have made Tech our bitch in the NCAA tournament since 2000. What's next? You don't care about football that wasn't played this year.

Conceding basketball (which I probably shouldn't, but for the sake of simplicity, I will), UGA has the better program in football, baseball, men's tennis, men's swimming, women's swimming, gymnastics, women's basketball.

That leaves Tech with basketball(which is more a product of UGA ineptitude than Tech's program), track, and women's tennis(which is ironic since I didn't know women were allowed at Tech). I'll take that.

Anonymous said...

Tri guy -

Maybe if they offered Math at UGA you would concede baseball too. The question is what team is consistently better. The answer is GT.

Sure you made the finals last year in the CWS, but Tech has recently been in the finals too.

More telling, although you claim you've made Tech "your bitch" in the NCAA tournament, you ignore the fact that UGA has only made the tournament 6 times since 1991. Since 2000, UGA has failed to make the tourney three times, Tech only once.

And Jman, we are just talking sports programs. If you want to stick with the you're better in basketball we're better in football argument we can play that game too.

Anonymous said...

"The question is what team is consistently better."
Since when? Since you don't want to mention that GT has NEVER EVEN MADE A SINGLE APPEARANCE at the CWS?

Anonymous said...

I hate to do this to a Tech fan. The love statistics and numbers.

http://nacda.cstv.com/directorscup/nacda-directorscup-previous-scoring.html

That, my friend, is the Director's Cup. Please just look at where UGA is and where GT is on a year to year basis. Once you are done. I want to hear your twisted logic as to which school has better athletic success...

the tri guy said...

Uh, I don't think so buddy. UGA has been to Omaha 6 times, Tech 3. UGA has won a National title, Tech hasn't. Now you're right that I didn't major in math, but I do know that 6>3 and 1>0. I also know that UGA has ended Tech's season in either the Regionals or Superregionals 3 time since 2000. That my friend, is being someone's biatch.

Anonymous said...

Did Technerd anonymous forget that the year The tech womens tennis team won the title and again last year that in the regular season matchup GEORGIA won both times. But thats right, he doesn't care about head to head matchups. Remember that in the morning after the game tonight.

Who cares? I ready for football season again! ;-(

To Anon 2:11,
Its was very convenient of you to start your basketball statistics in 1984 rather than 1983 since UGA was in the final four in 1983. That would make Tech only having one more final four than Georgia. Not nearly as overwhelming as you tried to skew it to be.

Anonymous said...

So we've controlled most of the game, and yech introduces the incredible innovation of the "full court press" and our team shits itself and Felton waits about 12 turnovers too late to call a time out and make an adjustment.

Unreal.

Anonymous said...

This is absolutely pathetic. Every single time Tech misses a shot they get the offensive rebound. Literally EVERY time. No box outs, no efforts to challenge, nothing. One possession they had 5 FIVE offensive rebounds in a row. I don't care about Favors... I don't care about the SEC tourney title... this team is an embarrassment and Felton needs to be gone immediately. I can't believe I actually watched this garbage.

Anonymous said...

i wish i had a list of how many things we've completely screwed in the last 5 minutes of this game... if it wasn't so infuriating it would be damn right comical.

great shot terrance! you absolutely needed to forced that air ball when there was 8 seconds remaining on the clock and trey was wide open at the top of the key... and you're a friggin' senior, the guy who's supposed to know better.

Anonymous said...

The team didn't have a defensive rebound for at least the last 5 minutes.

Anonymous said...

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!
2nd half turnovers, poor free throw shooting, inability to execute on offense late in the game, lack of hustle, sloppy defense...I'm just sick and tired of this.

We deserve better!!
Fire Felton!

Anonymous said...

Boy, oh boy. I have sat through a lot of junior varsity girls' games in my life, but that debacle tonight is the worst "game" of "basketball" that I have ever sat through.

I was a little worried that we would win for a while, but the epic and pathetic nature of tonight's 2nd half collapse should only hasten Felton's firing.

How did Albert Jackson manage to look competent during the SEC Tourney last year? He is a trainwreck whenever the ball is in his hands.

Free throws.

Either T-Wood is too hurt to play, or he is the laziest basketball player in the sport's history. He got beat for loose balls no less than 7 times.

Felton is to basketball coaching what Barney Fife is to law enforcement.

Whoever inherets the team next year will have some pretty good talent to work with. We should win 20 games next year, with a decent coach.

1) Thanks to all of you for trying to talk smack. Luckily both of us are terrible at basketball. Still,
the better team (i.e. the team that actually learned how to rebound) won. See y'all at Turner Field in a few months.

2) "Its was very convenient of you to start your basketball statistics in 1984 rather than 1983 since UGA was in the final four in 1983. That would make Tech only having one more final four than Georgia. Not nearly as overwhelming as you tried to skew it to be."

The reason I chose certain years to start counting was bc of tri guys post...

"When is the last time Tech has been consistently better than UGA in ANY sport. Come on Techies, I want the sport and the years"

Really, if half of you bothered to read these posts for context you might end up making sense. So yes, although you made it to the final four in 1983, 1983 comes before 1984. Tech has been consistently better than Uga in basketball since 1984. Again, that does not include 1983. I'll concede you were better in 1983. Happy?

3) "Uh, I don't think so buddy. That my friend, is being someone's biatch."

Are you that stupid tri guy? Using your request for information, I said that Tech has been consistently better than Uga in baseball since 1991. Uga has NOT won a national title since 1991. Nor has Uga made 6 CWS since 1991 (instead only 4). In fact, Uga has only made 6 NCAA tourney appearances since 1991. Conversely, and as now explained to you for the second time (slow learner?), Tech over the same period is 3 and 16. Obviously you have the edge in CWS appearances, but as you framed the question as CONSISTENTLY better, I think the SIXTEEN appearances is oh so slightly more consistent than your SIX appearances. Again, it was YOUR dumb ass who wanted the sport and YEARS. You don't get to rearrange the years YOU asked ME to provide. Tech has been consistently better than Uga from 1991 to present. The only reasonable point you made (well actually, its one I made for you) is that you have more CWS appearances over that span.

4) "You can't be serious by arguing that more people watch the NCAA women's tennis national championship than the SEC Men's Basketball Championship, can you?"

No. Although both are irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, I was just pointing out that GT has won 2 recent national championships in women's tennis, a sport uga is usually very good in and is (or at least should be) proud of.

PS - I wasn't posting the just like football comments so yes, I am acting like I've been here before. Good game doggies.

This was probably the most embarrassing game i have ever seen. Both teams and coaches are awful. It was terrible watching these two teams play. Felton needs to be fired.

Since Staff is announcing on campus today, could that mean he has traveled back to Athens because he is planning on going to class tomorrow (and not going pro). Couldn't he have made his announcement in Dallas if he were going pro?

On the other hand, the fact that he is announcing the day before classes start makes me think that he is going pro. If he weren't in class on Thursday, it'd be pretty clear that he was planning to go pro as players can only miss 3 classes a semester. So you'd think he want to announce his decision before everyone else does it for him...

Bernie said...

TC - Rivals is reporting they are both turning pro. I guess we'll find out officially soon...

According to Rivals, it's been confirmed by someone on staff that both are turning pro and will announce today.

Vacated games? Pretty sure the only vacated games relative to these two schools (per NCAA) are the UGA basketball games in '01-'02 and '02-'03.

The only parts of the NCAA penalties that UGA appealed were (a) the reduction by one scholarship for 3 years, and (b) teh 4 years of probation. the NCAA Appeals Committee overturned the reducton in scholarships, since so many signees were released, but did not overturn the probation.

The vacated games were not even appealed. That decision stands.

Anonymous said...

So what your saying Anonymous 9:41 is that Tech's cheating was ok and Ga'a wasn't and we had to give up games and you didn't? Either way you had to cheat to play inelgible players to beat us in football those years.

Anonymous said...

I'll guess what he/she was saying was that when the NCAA finds a program guilty of intentional things like academic fraud and unethical conduct, they don't tend to be as lenient.

Anonymous said...

^ LOL.

Kinda like asking how many points a three pointer is worth and giving college credit for it.

Doesn't that make you proud of your degrees, Mutts? Guess what, my dog has papers too... sad thing is those papers are probably worth more than yours, although both reflect a historical trend of inbreeding.
