Signing Day

Keep up with all of that over at Georgiadogs.com. I'm not going to post much during the day, but I'll have some thoughts on the class late tonight. I'm traveling to the b-ball game tonight, and I'll post very late after.

Go Dawgs.

So far, so sucky.

Reports are Brown leaning towards OSU.

I heard Orson Charles went to preschool with a girl who now plays the flute in the Oklahoma band, and he's definitely going there.

This will be the first year in a while that we don't finish with a top-10 class. Rivals has already bumped us out of the top 10, and I don't expect us to land anyone else ... except maybe Orson Charles, who won't be making a decision today.

It's embarrassing that our coaches made such a big deal about recruiting at least 2 top wide receivers, and now it looks as if we'll only be signing one so-so receiver.

Anonymous said...

A so-so receiver?

Dude - Have you seen Wooten's film? He looks like a street legal version of Percy Harvin.

Or if you prefer a much faster version of Damien Gary.

Anonymous said...

Paul, 90% of these people have never heard of any of our signees until today.

Also, I wouldn't go by film. Blair Walsh looked like a can't miss on his youtube clips as well.

Anonymous said...

There's nothing wrong with Blair Walsh's leg that coaching wouldn't fix.

Pretty sure Butler will tell you that, too.

Fabris is a good DE coach, but he's an absolute disaster at Special Teams right now.

Give me the guys that committed early, and will remain committed, to Georgia. I will take them against all the prima donnas Tennessee, Bama and Florida sign.

This is exactly why students in Gainesville have to pad lock their book bags. Bad character is bad character no matter the 40 time.

"So far, so sucky" That is just insane. Because we had 17 high quality guys commit early and never waver they are now "sucky".

Would you prefer to field 11 drama queens this fall or 11 committed Dawgs.

All of these late deciders are the most likely to transfer within 2 years, or trade in their orange jersey for an orange jumper in prison somewhere.

Welcome to the family Bulldawgs! Hunker Down!

Is it just me, or are we not closing like we used to?

I know we had to adjust our strategy early on due to the then-low scholarship availability, but still, we're getting nothing on signing day, losing out to tOSU, FSU, etc.

It's not horrible, but it is disappointing.

Anonymous said...

Depends on what you mean by closing.

We have:

2 of the Top 10 QB's
1 Top 5 TE (maybe 2)
1 Top 10 RB
1 Top 10 DT
1 Top 3 OG
1 Top 10 OT

We closed alright. We just did it months ago.

As far as I can tell we are one of the only teams with no decommits.

Theres a reason Scout/ESPN has our class at 7 with no signing day drama queens.

Anonymous said...

I also forgot Branden Smith...although he was a more recent commit.

I follow recruiting but try not to invest too much in to it.

It is interesting to note, though, that according to Rivals right now, the SEC has ten of the Top 25 recruiting classes. The next closest conference is the ACC with four. The Big Ten, The Big Twelve, and Pac-10 all have only three.

As for the doom and gloom guys around here, think about this...

Utah hasn't had a Top 25 recruiting class (according to Rivals) in the last five years. Alabama has been in the top 18 all five and had the #1 class last year. Yet, Bama was dismantled and embarrased by Utah in the Sugar Bowl.

I'm not saying Utah is better than every team in the SEC. Alabama was young and had injuries. But Utah had some pretty good players that Rivals and Scout didn't think much about out of high school.

I am really starting to believe these recruiting services check the way the big name college winds are blowing and go from there. In the other words, if the big schools are recruiting a guy, he must be at least a 3-star guy.

Anonymous said...

I'm not worried at all. Look at the talent we have signed even without Greg Reid. 2 of the best QBs and possible the best CB in Branden Smith. I don't put much in the team rankings to begin with. I mean look at Ohio State...Top 5 every year but can't win a BCS game to save their lives. At least we know all the ones we have signed are 100% committed to our program since they made their decisions a while ago.

Anonymous said...

Our overall ranking isn't going to be comparatively as high as previous years because we are signing a smaller class. But we are top 5 in average ranking per recruit. RedCrake does a good job above of breaking it down.

JT said...

mike from valdosta -
"sucky" was not in reference to any of the kids we signed. I'll take every single one of them, no complaints.

But we continue to never be able to close big on signing day. Reid is a miss. Stephen Hill is a miss. Word is that Marlon is OSU bound and Starling is USC bound. We'll have to wait on Geathers and Charles.

All I'm saying is that I would have loved to have a few of those guys to put us over the top. and hell, if they are bad character guys, then let the screw up and boot them off the team.

Granted though, for every Herschel there's a Hoage, so we'll see where we stand in four years.

Anonymous said...

JT, I guess we'll have to comfort ourselves with the chumps we have gotten on signing day under Richt, like Tim Jennings, Knowshon Moreno, and Reshad Jones. Don't close well? Whatever.

Admit it, if Aaron Murray and Branden Smith had waited until today, you would be very impressed with our "closing". Who cares when we sign. I'm more concerned with who we sign, and as Redcrake points out, we've done a damned good job by that measure.

JT said...

Macon, I'm not saying we haven't recruited well. We have. But other programs have made a killing on the final day and made serious waves. For the most part, we haven't. Knowshon was a great signing day steal. The jury is still out on Reshad.

I'm happier than a pig in poop to have guys like Branden and Aaron who seem to be great caliber guys. But it seems we were really looking forward to nailing down atleast 2 out of about 6 guys. It is looking more and more like we might get one. Granted, I'll take a Kwame Geathers or Orson Charles whenever they decide they want to sign.

My point is that we haven't many things to provide positive momentum this offseason and a major haul today would have done just that.

Anonymous said...

So what is the statistical difference between #1 and #7?

I venture to guess almost none.

So much hype.

Anonymous said...

Wow, just wow. What a sparse class with very few blue chippers. Someone please remind me why Rodney Garner is considered a good recruiter.

Anonymous said...

Jarvis Jones to USC.

Anonymous said...

JT, I understand. Green to Johnson for a touchdown as time runs out to win the SEC East is very exciting. But I would have rather had those points on the board by halftime and game in hand.

But I understand what you meant.

Go Dawgs!

Every year it is the same story. Richt locks up a bunch of 4/5 star guys months before signing day and those guys are forgotten. That makes Signing Day seem rather uneventful with relatively few surprises. Then all of the complainers come out of the woodwork. What gripes me the most is this simple fact: If Richt had signed the SAME EXACT 17 PLAYERS - but had Murray, Smith, and Ealey sign today rather than months ago - you people would be jumping for joy. I would much rather have the guys commit early and keep their mouths shut, rather than sit around on Signing Day waiting for some fickle attention seeker play the shell game with a bunch of hats on ESPN. But I guess that makes me strange...

JT said...

The only difference is that most years we're not expecting to sign anyone new. We're just glad to hold on to our commits. This year we were actually expecting it, so it's just a tad of a letdown.

But hell, it's a good class with good players. We'll find out in four years exactly how good.

Bring on OK State!

Anonymous said...

JT:

I guess we agree, because you're making my point for me. Expectations shouldn't enter into it. My point remains: if Murray, Smith, and Ealey had signed today - rather than months ago - everyone would be absolutely giddy...over the SAME PLAYERS.

Uhhh...please excuse the caps...not yelling...just trying to make my point.

The Watch Dawg said...

You guys realize that we could still land both Marlon brown and Orson Charles... which would give us a VERY GOOD class? Even without either of them, we still have a very strong class. You can't get too caught up in the recruiting rankings. If you are top 25, great, if you are top 10, your class is as good as anybody's in the nation. Anything higher than 10 is gravy.... and if we land Brown and Charles we will be top 10.

Anonymous said...

Also, as was mentioned earlier, class rankings are deceptive. UGA isn't going to have a top five class simply because it will be rather small. Those rankings can get inflated by quantity, but UGA's class has quality. UGA's average ranking per player is top five in a lot of estimates last I checked.

MARLON BROWN BABY!!!!

SWEET SWEET VINDICATION!

Anonymous said...

OK guys...THERE'S your sizzle you wanted so badly. Marlon Brown is a Dawg.

JT said...

hell yes! don't we all feel better???

Anonymous said...

Murray and Mettenburger just became better quarterbacks!

Solid line for the next few years, great potential at all the skill positions. Sprinkle in some our usual quality coaching and we should be just fine on the offensive side of the ball.

As far defense, we seem to have more surprises on that side of the ball, I bet it ends up being a great class. Can't wait to see Shawn Williams put a little weight on and bring some violence back to our secondary. Brown will lock'em down, and Montez and Jones will break gaytor bones.

Go Dawgs!

Anonymous said...

The coaches recruited loyal Dawgs and these dawgs did not waiver. Now lets add Geathers and Charles to Marlon. Amen!

Anonymous said...

Expanding on my earlier point about quantity versus quality...according to Rivals, Alabama has the number 1 class in 2009. They also had the number 1 class in 2008. But here's the catch: You can only have 85 scholarships total, and you can only sign 25 in any given year. But look at the last three years. According to Rivals, they had 25 commitments in 2007, 32 in 2008, and 27 this year. You have to remember that LOTS of those guys are never gonna enroll at Bama. So the number 1 ranking becomes a little less meaningful.

The Watch Dawg said...

Marlon Brown and AJ Green at wide-out, Wooten in the slot, Murray/Mett under center.... my god..... there's the future of your offense right there. And it is bright.

For everyone wanting a sizzling last minute commit to make you feel better I have one name for you: Brandon Miller.

Anonymous suckup-

While numbers certainly help inflate a school's recruiting ranking, you're missing a couple things. First, if your looking at Rivals, they only take a school's top 22 commits into account when ranking teams, so anything above that is not factored in. But you do have a point about many of their signees never actually enrolling... the rankings become much more relevant when they are adjusted for those who did not qualify in June. The other thing is that we were looking to sign roughly 22 guys this year, so that is why many people are a little disappointed. Even if everyone enrolls (which will almost certainly not happen), we will have slightly undersigned.

I love our class though. We filled needs and did so with quality kids. My only regret is that Toby Jackson won't be joining us next fall.

Anonymous said...

That said, the only rankings that are truly relevant are the final post season BCS and AP polls.

Anonymous said...

These comments are HIGHlarious..especially the early ones. Wow, what a bunch of negative folks.

Anonymous said...

Cuatro:

I did not know that about Rivals only considering the top 22 recruits. I'll take you at your word. But my greater point remains: If you look at the average ranking per player, UGA is in the top five. If they end up with a couple of extra scholoarships, then so be it. I'd rather have those saved for next year than see them spent on lesser players this year. Next year should be a rather small class too, so it wouldn't hurt to save a couple.

Anonymous said...

And with the signing of MB we are back in the Rivals Top 10. Ahead of Florida.

They only have 16 signees. Talk about undersigning. Thats what happens when you put all your eggs in the signing day basket.

Anonymous said...

Suckup:

Agreed about us being better off not offering lesser talent and instead saving the 'ships for next year. We didn't land a few of our targets, but that's no reason to be handing out offers irresponsibly. Let's reward a couple walk-on seniors with a scholarship this fall. And now we need to start offering our instate 2010 talent quickly before we lose any ground.

When is Orson Charles suppose to decide?

JT said...

Next week, I think. He's taking a visit to USC. Hopefully, Pete keeps his crystal footballs in a case.

Anonymous said...

Half time of the UGA b-ball game.

We have 1 Assist and O.00 FT attempts.

Is that even possible?

Anonymous said...

I'm going to vomit over all this Bobby Knight garbage. I can't believe people are actually taking this seriously.

Anonymous said...

Im not a genius here, but if you look at Georgiadogs.com it says Marlon Brown.

It says "Georgia added 18 signees to the football signing class of 2009. Each signee committed to the Bulldogs during national signing day on Wednesday February 4, 2009...4:00 p.m. Marlon Brown WR 6-5 200 Memphis, Tenn. Harding Academy"

How is that for negative?

Confirmed yet again. Marlon Brown = UGA.

Hmm...Brown and Green and Wooten and King.

When's Murray ready to start slinging?

Ww also got Augusta D-end Reuben Faloughi as a preferred walk-on. He had offers, but wants to be a Dawg.
