Damon Evans Address Jeff Capel Reports

Roger Clarkson of the Athens Banner-Herald talked with Damon Evans about yesterday's reports that Jeff Capel may be a candidate for the head basketball job and the rumors of a $2 million per year salary for the prospective new coach.

Damon wouldn't specifically say that anyone is a candidate, and he couldn't be pinned down on the dollar figures.  Here's the most interesting part of what he did say:

"I am committed to the basketball program and we are willing to pay what we think is a competitive salary based on the qualifications of the applicant," Evans said. "What that is will depend on the applicant, and we are willing to pay what we think is appropriate."

Evans has not been reluctant to spend money on basketball since he took over in 2004. Georgia opened a $30 million practice facility for men's and women's basketball and gymnastics in 2007.

A $2 million yearly salary would rank third in the Southeastern Conference after Florida's Billy Donovan ($3.25 million per year) and Kentucky's Billy Gillispie ($2.36 million).

That's about all Damon can really say at this time.  It's a good read.

....rumor is that its 2.8 mill.

Yea, Yea, Yea...I know CMR's base is 2.8....but like the man said, he is committed to the basketball program and we are willing to pay what we think is a COMPETITIVE salary

Why don't we just get $6 million a year together and offer coach K? We could technically afford that right?

Who gives a rats ass is we pay a bball coach more than what richt makes. Capel would be worth every penny of 3 million or 3.5 million if we went that high which i doubt.

This is Damon's way of telling people he isn't fooling around and that he will pay TOP DOLLAR to get a great coach

I love it

When will Derrick Favors sign? How long would a new coach be able to pester him into de-comitting?

what goes into a $30 million practice basketball facility anyway?

After watching Capel's Sooners against Mizzou last night, I came away less than impressed. His team looked lazy and slow. Blake Griffin is a beast, but that team played without passion.

Anon 4:13,

The $2.8 million stat is total bullsh*t. I'll explain why at 12:01 AM tonight when my scheduled post goes up.

We're getting aggressive...not reckless or stupid.

Dubs,

I've toured the practice facility. It has 2 practice courts (for men and women) and a gymnastics practice area which is absolutely awesome.

It also has 3 world class locker rooms, 3 lounge areas, 3 study areas, and 3 sets of coaches offices.

It also has a very large weight room for *all* UGA sports other than football. They have their own weight room.

It's positively awesome.

It wouldn't surprise me if Gillespie gets the boot after this season, not saying we should go after him, but that Capel, or whoever could be #2

Georgia needs Anthony Grant of VCU. Forget those other guys. If you anything about college basketball then you know that he is the right choice.
