Mississippi State comes to Athens this weekend for the SEC opener at Foley Field. The Dawgs took out Georgia State Wednesday in Atlanta 11-6. The good news from that game, other than the win, was Alex McRee's return to the mound after his bout with mono. The bad news was McRee may have rushed back a bit soon. He pitched just one inning and gave up two earned runs. McRee will start Saturday in his usual spot, between Holder on Friday and Grimm on Sunday. Frankly, I'd rather have McRee at 100% later than 75% now, if the rush back is going to hinder his recovery. He's just too important to jeopardize.
Thus far, State hasn't hit or pitched particularly well. Their team average is .288 and their team ERA is 4.18. They won their series against Carolina last weekend, but have three bad losses at Hawai'i earlier this year. State is #25 in the Colligate Baseball poll, so they can play. But, they haven't seen a team with Georgia's offensive firepower yet. It should be a good series.
The weather is supposed to be great this weekend, so get out to Foley Field and root on the team.

I believe today's game and Sunday's game will be televised on CSS as well
Dawgs won tonight
hobnail, was there any other option?
Hmm. Touche.
Georgia 5 - Bizarros 3
I'm going today.
The deficit could have easily been greater had the (literally) 5-6 Diamond Dawg shots caught at the track/wall been hit a few feet further.
Kudos to Cerione for what was, at the time he caught it, the defensive play of the night. He was moving toward right field to chase down a ball and laid out beautifully to secure the out.
Verdin took the award for the best of the night though when, in the top of the 7th he was moving toward the home bullpen, crashed into the chain link fence, flipped into the bullpen, and came up with the ball to end the inning.
Also, the 3876 in attendance was the 6th largest Foley crowd of all time and the 2nd largest in regular season history. Kudzu hill was about 3/4 full and there were many people looking over the wall from right field into right center.
Saturday night the Dawgs had a 4-0 win over in Mississippi State in front of 4,461 fans, the largest crowd in Foley Field history....according to Georgiadogs.com.
4-0 final, but it was 0-0 into the fifth and 1-0 into the eighth. That means Georgia's staff worked basically the entire game with no margin for error. Dogs had only five hits themselves, three through the first seven. But the bullpen pitched five innings and gave up ONE hit.
(McRee gave up four in four, but had six walks. He loaded the bases in the second and third and had runners at second and third in the fourth. Still, he didn't allow a run.)
The umps were atrocious yesterday.
Great job Dawgs. A much needed sweep.
