960theRef interview with Mark Fox

The Athens sports talk station 960theRef spent about 15 minutes today with Coach Fox talking about his vision for the UGA program.  It's a confidence inspiring discussion.  The MP3 interview file is 4.9 Mbs, but it's worth the slow download.

A few days ago, Dave Johnson and the 960 crew also spent some time with Mark Slonaker.  Slonaker is a former UGA player and assistant who currently works in a fund raising capacity for UGA following his time as head basketball coach at Mercer.  Slonaker talked with Johnson about how Coach Fox is being received on the AAU circuit and what type of person he is.  Good stuff.

I must say that interview with Coach Fox was very encouraging. I'm liking this hire more and more with each passing day. Does anyone else get the sense that he simply gets 'it'? I can't say I felt the same way about Dennis Felton.

It seems that he gets what the job is about. He gets that it is more than just coaching Xs and Os. He seems to embrace the external requirements that Felton hated. He seems like the type of coach that will go to the student body and try and connect. He seems very genuine. I think this is why we needed a search firm. This guy was not someone who jumped out at you, but I'm sure when his resume is in front of you and he probably rocked the interview, then you have no choice but to hire. I'm glad we stayed away from people like Knight and Grant who just wanted an offer and not an interview.

It's also worth noting that according to the AJC he's already started calling Atlanta area high school coaches to get the lay of the land. That couldn't possibly be a bad thing.

"Coach Slon" is a great guy. He coached the basketball team at Mercer when I was in law school there and was absolutely beloved until he hit a streak of down years. He should be great at getting people to write checks, glad to know he landed on his feet.

Also of note, 960 the Ref in Athens is now streaming online. It is a valuable resource for out-of-state Dawgs like myself.

Interesting that he recruited Dustin Ware at UNR. If he can find a 2 guard and a backup PG with a pulse, UGA might win a few games next season.

Holy crap, that's the best news I've heard all year Quinton. My name is misleading now that I live in Montana. Thanks for the info.

For those who missed it- Fox got on the middle of the field at G-Day before the 4th quarter for that song that the band plays.

Hopefully that's not the last time he gets cheers from everyone in attendance.
